Memorial Day weekend shooting leaves 11 injured near North Myrtle Beach as police hunt suspects
South Carolina authorities continue to search for the suspect or suspects who carried out a mass shooting that left 11 people injured on Sunday evening in Little River, near North Myrtle Beach. The Horry County Police Department described the shooting as an isolated incident stemming from an altercation on a charter boat during a private Memorial Day gathering. There were about 124 people onboard the boat, including four crew members, when the shooting occurred, Horry County police said during a Tuesday press conference. Three victims are still hospitalized while eight have been released, authorities said during the press conference. "This type of violence will not be tolerated in Horry County," HCPD Chief Kris Leonhardt said. "We are going to do our very best to investigate this case and bring criminal charges against these folks that have caused this incident here in our county." Horry County Fire Department Chief Joseph Tanner said authorities initially got a call around 9:15 p.m. reporting an injury and responded accordingly. Upon arrival, officials located multiple gunshot-wounded victims. The charter boat party attendees were from out of town, Leonhardt said, making it more difficult to track down witnesses. A total of 10 victims sustained gunshot wounds and another person reported an unknown injury not related to gunfire, the police department said in a Monday press release. Some victims were recovered from the water, the North Myrtle Beach Police Department (NMBPD) said in a separate press release. "Of those, the worst of the injured are in critical but stable condition at area hospitals," Horry County police said in a press release. Videos and photos posted to social media on Sunday evening showed a heavy police presence in the area of the Dolphin Cruise parking lot in Little River, located north of North Myrtle Beach. NMBPD also said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating a separate incident involving a responding North Myrtle Beach officer who was injured with his own firearm near the Harbourgate Marina in North Myrtle Beach. "A NMBPD Officer was entering a gate to the dock when his rifle discharged twice, with one of the rounds striking his leg," the department said in its press release. "At the time of the discharge, the Officer had both of his hands on the gate, which was confirmed by later video evidence. Due to the Officer not attempting to utilize his weapon at the time, all Officers on scene believed that shots were being fired from the marina area." The officer was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Video footage obtained from a witness apparently shows the incident, and authorities determined that "the discharge was from the wounded Officer's rifle," and the scene was released to SLED. Horry County police said the shooting remains under investigation, and "there is currently no associated risk to the community." Crime concerns in and around Myrtle Beach have been heightened since April 26, when a shooting in the Myrtle Beach entertainment district left the shooter dead and 11 victims injured. Myrtle Beach officials described the shooting as an isolated incident at the time. Video footage shows the Anne Arundel County Police Department using support from its Aviation Unit to track down a stolen car. On May 7, detectives conducting surveillance near Crain Highway in Glen Burnie spotted suspects near a stolen car that had been flagged by a license plate reader. The vehicle was successfully recovered. Maryland police departments begin using drone technology Maryland police departments have begun to utilize drone technology more in recent months. Earlier in June, Howard County Police found a missing 5-year-old boy using a drone with thermal imaging technology. In April 2024, police used drone thermal imaging to track down a teen who crashed a stolen vehicle and was attempting to evade police in Columbia. The footage released by HCPD showed an officer checking the stolen vehicle for occupants before speaking with witnesses to try and find the suspect. Police used the drone to locate the suspect near the crash site. The Frederick County Police Department launched its drone program in February, which included the deployment of three Skydio X10 drones for search and rescue, public event monitoring, and disaster surveys. Drones were used in the capture of David Linthicum in 2023, a man found guilty of shooting two Baltimore County Police officers before fleeing to Fallston, leading police on a multi-day manhunt. In November 2024, Harford County Police used drones to track down two teens suspected of breaking into over 20 vehicles. The drones were able to capture the suspects' body heat to track the suspects down. The 15- and 16-year-olds were later charged with breaking into at least 21 cars in a crime spree in Abingdon and Joppa. Harford County currently has 11 drones in its fleet. In April 2024, Harford County Police also used drones to capture suspects in two home invasions. The Harford County Sheriff said drones are cheaper than helicopters, require less staff to operate, and can be deployed more quickly. "Public safety is enhanced through these kinds of technologies, and there's going to be a day where it's probably going to be standard to have one in every car," Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said. ACLU raises concerns about drone use The American Civil Liberties Union has raised concerns about privacy regarding police drones being used to monitor protests. The organization estimates that about 80% of law enforcement agencies nationwide use drones, a number expected to grow.

Bail denied for teen arrested in deadly 2024 Columbia mall shooting
Bail has been denied for a Maryland teen who was arrested in New York for a deadly, 2024 shooting inside The Mall in Columbia, according to Howard County Police. William Marshall III, 18, of Columbia, is accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Angelo Little on July 27, 2024, at the Mall in Columbia. Marshall was 17 years old at the time. UPDATE: Marshall waived extradition in New York City and had a bail review hearing this morning in Howard County. Teen arrested for deadly shooting inside Columbia Mall Police said Marshall returned to Howard County last Friday in order to appear for his bail hearing Monday. He is currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center. After the shooting, which happened after an altercation near the mall's food court, police issued a warrant for Marshall's arrest. Authorities said Marshall specifically targeted Little in the attack. Surveillance video released by Howard County Police last year showed Marshall running through several corridors of the mall, including the housekeeping hallway. In addition to the video, police released Marshall's picture. A second post in late May, which recirculated the same video, reminding the public that they were continuing the search for Marshall, led to a public tip that Marshall was staying at an apartment in New York City. Howard County Detectives, U.S. Marshals, and officers from the New York Police Department went to the location in Brooklyn, N.Y., searched the building, and found Marshall in an apartment. Mother of Angelo Little grieves loss Last year, Charell Wilson, Angelo's mother, spoke to WJZ, recounting the moment when she found out her son had been tragically killed. Wilson said she and her son moved to Columbia from East Baltimore in 2014 because she thought it would be safer. She said she did not expect to lose her son to gun violence in Columbia, which is currently experiencing a rise in youth violence. Howard County Police data shows a rising trend in homicides. In February of this year, another shooting at The Mall in Columbia left two teen victims dead – one a sophomore at Wilde Lake High School, and the other a freshman attending Oakland Mills High School. 18-year-old Emmetson Zeah was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with murder.

HOWARD COUNTY, Md. () — A teen who was wanted for murder in connection with a shooting at the was arrested in New York City, according to the Howard County Police Department (HCPD). Police announced on Thursday, May 31, that 18-year-old William Marshall III, was taken into custody for the murder of 17-year-old Angelo Little. 'I am proud of the outstanding, tireless work of everyone involved in this search, including HCPD officers, U.S. Marshals and our HCPD social media team,' said Howard County Police Chief Gregory Der. 'There was true creativity and ingenuity that resulted in this apprehension. We aren't immune from crime in Howard County, but if you commit a crime here, we will catch you and bring you to justice, no matter how long it takes.' As the video continues, the man is seen sitting at a table in the food court with his head down. Once Little begins walking to the bathroom, the person follows him. According to police, he then waited for Little to leave the bathroom, and that's when he fired one shot before running through the back door. About a month later, detectives identified Marshall, who was 17 at the time, as the suspected gunman. He was charged with first-degree murder. Their investigation determined that Marshall, also known as 'Junior,' knew Little and targeted him. Since 'Crime Reduction Plan', Howard County PD reports no gun-related violence near Columbia mall For several months, authorities were unable to locate Marshall. Despite this, officials continued to conduct extensive interviews. Investigators also tracked down hundreds of tips, reviewed digital evidence, conducted hours of surveillance and traveled to multiple states. As the search for Marshall intensified, the U.S. Marshals joined the police department's search. The case had a break in late May of 2025, when detectives received a lead that Marshall was in New York City. During the overnight hours of May 28, authorities searched a building in Brooklyn, NY, where they apprehended Marshall. 'This was a collaborative effort with months of diligence, long nights, and communication. After a long road, our hard work has led us to the arrest of William Marshall. We remain committed to ensuring accountability and taking criminals off the street,' said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. As of May 29, Marshall was being held in New York and was awaiting extradition to Maryland. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and officials are working to determine what led up to the shooting.
