Indian Navy holds ‘Steel Cutting' ceremony for fourth Fleet Support Ship at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam
'Steel Cutting' ceremony of fourth of the five Fleet Support Ships (FSS) was held at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, as the chief guest, according to a release here on Saturday. Vice-admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, and commodore Hemant Khatri, CMD, HSL, and other senior officials from Navy and HSL were present. The Navy had signed a contract with HSL for acquisition of five FSS in August 2023, with delivery commencing mid-2027. On induction, the FSS will bolster the 'Blue Water' capabilities of the Indian Navy through replenishment of Fleet ships at sea. The ships, with a displacement of more than 40,000 tons, will deliver fuel, water, ammunition and stores enabling prolonged deployments of the Fleet Ships, thereby enhancing the Fleet's strategic reach and mobility. In their secondary role, these ships would be equipped for Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO) for expeditious delivery of relief material and evacuation of personnel. With a completely indigenous design and sourcing of majority of the equipment from indigenous manufacturers, the FSS project will boost the Indian Shipbuilding Industry in consonance with the Union government's initiatives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India and Make for the World.

Visakhapatnam: Steel Cutting of 4th FSS takes place at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd
Visakhapatnam, June 19 (UNI) Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) today said it has achieved a significant milestone with the steel cutting of the fourth Fleet Support Ship (FSS) for the Indian Navy. The ceremonial steel cutting was formally initiated by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, PVSM, AVSM, NM, Chief of the Naval Staff, in the presence of VAdm Rajesh Pendharkar, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, CINCENC and VAdm Rajaram Swaminathan, AVSM, NM, CWP&A, a release said here. The CNS lauded HSL's progress and stated that the FSS will be the second-largest indigenous warship after INS Vikrant. At 223 meters long and over 40,000T in displacement, it will enable fleet replenishment, helicopter operations, frontline maintenance, and HADR support—boosting naval endurance at sea. Amidst evolving security challenges, he stressed the need for a combat-ready, future-proof Navy. Highlighting that 59 of 60 naval ships under construction are being built in India, he reaffirmed the Navy's commitment to self-reliance and the Prime Minister's 'Maha Sagar' vision for secure, cooperative maritime growth. Cmde Hemant Khatri, C&MD of HSL, highlighted the strategic importance of the FSS project - awarded after a long gap and affirmed HSL's readiness to deliver, leveraging experience from INS Dhruv and Diving Support Vessels. The fourth FSS will be built on the upgraded slipway with a 300T Goliath crane, enhancing HSL's capacity for future large naval projects like LPDs, Hemant said. In FY 2024–25, HSL posted its best-ever financials with Rs 1,783 Crore income, Rs 284 crore PBT, and a positive net worth of Rs 493 Cr after 40 years. Notably, all four FSSs began construction within 22 months of contract signing, reflecting strong execution and growing momentum, he added.. With a healthy order book, modern infrastructure, and focus on indigenisation and quality, HSL is well-positioned to support Aatmanirbhar Bharat and 'Make for the World.' UNI KNR RN

Air India crash: Army dispatches more than 100 jawans to Ahmedabad to assist rescue ops
'Teams are working in close coordination with local authorities. Our priority is rescue, medical aid and securing the crash site,' an official told ThePrint. 'The response includes engineering teams with JCBs for clearing debris, medical teams with doctors and paramedics, Quick Action Teams (QATs), fire-fighting units with extinguishers and water bowsers, as well as provost staff for site security and crowd management,' it said in a statement. New Delhi: The Indian Army has deployed nearly 130 personnel to support ongoing rescue and relief operations after the London-bound Air India aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Thursday. The Army said that its teams are assisting civil administration efforts under the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mandate. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has also deployed approximately 150 personnel to support rescue and relief operations following the crash. News agency ANI quoted a CRPF statement as saying, 'troops from the 100 Battalion of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and personnel from the CRPF's Group Centre in Gandhinagar have been mobilised to assist with on-ground efforts at the crash site.' A top official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had earlier told ThePrint that most of the 242 people aboard the flight are feared dead. The aircraft, AI171, was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB and serial number 36279. According to Flightradar24, which tracks live flight data globally, the aircraft lost signal at 10:08 am (GMT+1), at an altitude of just 625 feet, less than a minute after take-off from Ahmedabad International Airport. The flight was scheduled to land at London Gatwick Airport at 6:25 pm (GMT+1). TATA Group which took over Air India in January 2022 took to X to confirm the incident through a statement by its chairman, N. Chandrasekaran. 'At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and provide all necessary support and care to those impacted,' he said. Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, also released a statement Thursday, saying it is in contact with Air India and stands 'ready to support them'. 'Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders, and all affected,' the company added. According to the Boeing website, the 787-8 Dreamliner can carry up to 248 passengers, has a wingspan of 60 metres and a range of over 13,500 km. Arunachal Pradesh: BRO conducts medical camp in Upper Subansiri amid heavy rainfall
Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) [India], June 2 (ANI): As heavy rains continue to batter several north-eastern states, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) conducted a medical camp near Menga village, Upper Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh. In a post on X, the BRO shared, 'On 31 May 2025, amid continuous rainfall, BRO India conducted a medical camp near Menga village, Upper Subansiri, Arunachal Pradesh. Lecture @BROindia on tobacco hazards was delivered, followed by health check-ups, deworming of children, mosquito-borne disease awareness, and Odomos distribution. Free medicines were given based on clinical assessment. The camp benefited 41 individuals, including civilians and BRO personnel. @BROindia committed beyond infrastructure in nation-building.' 'Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast,' Shah on X. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for Arunachal Pradesh for the coming week, till June 6, predicting 'very heavy rain, thunderstorm and Lightning' on May 31. Meanwhile, the weather department has forecasted 'heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning' from June 1 to 5 while predicting only 'heavy rain' on June 5 and 6. Earlier Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Saturday offered condolences to the reported deaths of at least nine persons - seven in East Kameng district and two in Ziro valley - due to massive landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rains since last few days across the state and announced ex-gratia worth Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. In a statement, Chief Minister Khandu expressed grief at the loss of innocent lives and prayed for eternal peace and strength to bereaved family members. He announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the deceased's kin as per laid down government norms and assured assistance through the respective district administrations. (ANI)

Indian Air Force rescues 14 stranded individuals in flood-hit Arunachal Pradesh
Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) [India] June 2 (ANI): The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted a critical Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operation early this morning, rescuing 14 individuals stranded in the flooded Bomjir River in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Dibang Valley. According to Defence PRO, Guwahati, the operation was launched in response to an urgent request from the state administrations of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The stranded individuals, cut off from the mainland due to severe flooding, were airlifted to safety using an IAF Mi-17 helicopter. On Saturday, seven people were killed due to a landslide on the National Highway in Seppa West assembly constituency. Natung expressed condolences over the loss of life in the incident that occurred between Bana village and the Seppa area and advised people to avoid travelling at night during the monsoon season. 'It's very painful to hear about the tragic loss of seven lives in my Assembly constituency due to a landslide on NH 13 Road between Bana & Seppa. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families during this difficult time. I request everyone to remain vigilant and avoid travelling at night during the monsoon season. My thoughts and prayers are with the families affected. May their souls rest in peace. Om Shanti Shanti,' Natung posted on X.
