TDT | Manama Bahrain is positioning itself as the region's next re-export powerhouse, using its participation at a major Russian economic forum to court investment, deepen private-sector ties, and showcase its logistics edge to international partners. During his participation in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025, His Excellency Sameer Nass, Chairman of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that promoting the national economy and enhancing international investments is a strategic priority for the Kingdom. H.E. underlined Bahrain's ambition to become a key re-export platform, citing its strategic location and advanced logistics capabilities as core advantages. 'Russia is an important partner for Bahrain,' H.E. Nass said, leading a Chamber delegation to the event, which drew over 20,000 global participants from 140 countries. 'Our bilateral ties continue to evolve, especially in sectors like manufacturing and technology transfer, where we see immense opportunity,' H.E. sated. Gateway ambitions H.E. Nass highlighted Bahrain's plans to repurpose its logistics strength into a regional re-packaging and distribution centre. His Excellency emphasised the potential for joint ventures between Bahraini and Russian firms to create competitive advantages in diversified industrial sectors, supporting the Kingdom's broader vision of economic diversification. The Chamber, H.E. added, is intensifying its efforts to form durable global partnerships that support Bahrain's position as an investment-friendly business hub and attract new capital into fields such as technology, manufacturing, and trade logistics. Private-sector diplomacy The Chamber's First Vice Chairman, Khalid Najibi, who also chairs the Bahraini side of the Bahrain-Russia Business Council, said the SPIEF platform is being used to connect private sectors across both countries. 'We're promoting Bahrain's business environment and exploring new strategic alliances,' he noted, pointing to the forum as an opportunity to unlock joint investment projects and expand private-sector cooperation. Najibi said particular attention is being given to SMEs and emerging Bahraini enterprises that stand to benefit from direct engagement with Russian counterparts. SME spotlight Board Member Ahmed Al-Saloom reinforced the Chamber's focus on the small and medium-sized enterprise sector, calling it the foundation of Bahrain's commercial structure. He praised the forum for offering SMEs visibility on a global stage and access to new foreign market opportunities. He credited the Government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for prioritising SME development within the Kingdom's economic growth strategy. As SPIEF continues to serve as a global marketplace for strategic partnerships, Bahrain is using the platform to shift its trade model toward high-value re-export services, forging new business pathways in a changing global economy.

The meetings are part of Her Excellency's ongoing efforts to foster dialogue with the private sector in the tourism industry, in preparation for her assumption of office as UN Tourism Secretary-General early next year. Her Excellency said: 'Technology is a key pillar in my vision to develop a sustainable and responsible tourism sector both regionally and globally, given its vital role in creating innovative tourism models based on global best practices. It further improves quality of life while maintaining privacy and offering outstanding tourism experiences to visitors and tourists around the world.' H.E. emphasised the importance of increasing private‑sector investment in digital solutions that support tourism sustainability and building an integrated digital infrastructure that enhances operational efficiencies in tourism. During the discussions, Her Excellency underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships between the UN Tourism and private tourism companies to develop new initiatives and projects that facilitate mobility and communication across countries, and improve tourism destinations, particularly in light of challenges such as climate change and evolving travel and tourism trends.

The UAE delegation was headed by H.E. Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini, Minister of State for Financial Affairs, and included Thuraiya Hamid Alhashmi, Director of the International Financial Relations and Organisations Department at the Ministry of Finance and Governor to the OPEC Fund for International Development, and Hamad Issa Al Zaabi, Director of the Office of the Minister of State for Financial Affairs and Alternate Governor to the Fund. The meeting discussed the OPEC Fund's Annual Report for 2024 and focused on evaluating the progress made in implementing the Fund's plans and projects. It also addressed the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving global development landscape, particularly in areas such as energy and food security, climate change, and the need to create sustainable job opportunities. Participants also discussed ways to strengthen South-South cooperation and build sustainable partnerships between the OPEC Fund and regional and international development finance institutions to enhance the efficiency of responses to beneficiary countries' needs. Flexible Development Solutions: In his speech during the meeting, H.E. Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini praised the tangible achievements made over the past year, which marked a milestone in the Fund's journey toward expanding its operations and enhancing its resilience and adaptability. He stated: 'This year marks the 49th anniversary of the OPEC Fund's founding, reflecting the strength of its founding vision and its pioneering role in promoting sustainable development across the Global South. Over the past year, the Fund has demonstrated outstanding institutional performance, driven by a clear approach under the 2030 Strategic Framework, enabling it to effectively respond to rapidly evolving conditions and deliver flexible and actionable development solutions across various sectors.' He added: 'We recognise that the global development landscape is undergoing significant changes, with governments across our regions facing multiple challenges—from food security and energy provision to climate change adaptation and job creation. Amidst these challenges, the pressure on the development finance system is growing at an unprecedented pace. In this context, the OPEC Fund can play a central role in supporting countries by advancing South-South cooperation and offering financial solutions that span a wide range of sectors and instruments, in addition to its strong global credibility.' Advancing Development Efforts: The OPEC Fund for International Development is a multilateral development finance institution established in 1976. It works to strengthen cooperation between OPEC member countries and development partners from the Global South and the international development community. Its mission is to support sustainable social and economic progress in low- and middle-income countries worldwide, contributing to stability and prosperity in beneficiary countries by offering technical and financial assistance through concessional financing, grants, and development-focused aid across sectors such as agriculture, education, energy, health, and transport. Since its inception, the Fund has committed over USD 27 billion to support more than 4,000 development projects with a total estimated cost exceeding USD 200 billion across more than 125 countries.

Ministry of Economy launches Summer Hospitality Camp 2025 to build national capabilities in the hospitality sector
In the presence of H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Emirates Tourism Council, the Ministry of Economy launched the 'Summer Hospitality Camp 2025'. The comprehensive training program places students in real-world hospitality settings such as hotels and tourism facilities to enhance national tourism capabilities, supporting broader efforts to develop human capital in the UAE's tourism and hospitality sectors. The initiative aligns with the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031 and is being implemented in strategic partnership with academic institutions, tourism and hospitality companies, and leading hospitality providers across the country. The launch event was attended by H.E. Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais, Secretary-General elect of the United Nations World Tourism Organization for the 2026–2029 term, it was also attended by nearly 100 people representing the country's hospitality sector, along with student leaders, and industry professionals. Speaking at the event, H.E. Bin Touq emphasized that tourism has become a key driver of sustainable development and economic competitiveness, thanks to the vision and support of the UAE's wise leadership. Pointing out the sector's outstanding performance, he highlighted the importance of preparing leaders and developing national capabilities across tourism-related activities to ensure sustainable growth and enhance the sector's contribution to economic and social development. The Ministry of Economy works closely with government and private sector partners to achieve this strategic objective. H.E. added: 'The Summer Hospitality Camp is an investment in our young Emiratis, designed to equip them with the skills and training needed to thrive in the tourism sector. It reflects our commitment to increasing local participation in this vital industry and aligns with our vision for a dynamic tourism future led by capable Emirati talent. Through this initiative, we are preparing the next generation of leaders and innovators who will enrich the visitor experience in the UAE and serve as true ambassadors of our authentic Emirati identity and globally recognized hospitality.' H.E. Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais emphasized that the camp marks a significant step forward in building national capacity within the tourism sector. She noted that the program plays a vital role in developing human capital and cultivating world-class expertise through hands-on experience across various tourism and hospitality fields in the UAE. This model, she explained, aligns with global trends that position tourism as a key driver of economic and social development, advancing progress by building capabilities, attracting talent, and fostering innovation and sustainability. The Summer Hospitality Camp enhances Emiratization in the tourism sector by empowering country's youth and bridging the gap between university degrees and the labor market. It equips participants with practical experience and personal skills prior to entering the workforce. The program also focuses on building leadership qualities, teamwork spirit, and a culture of service excellence, while offering specialized hands-on training. The initiative will enable students to explore sustainable, long-term career pathways that align with global tourism growth and adhere to the highest international standards, further empowering youth to play an active and influential role in shaping the future economy. Organized in partnership with 35 hotel and tourism establishments across the UAE, the camp targets UAE nationals and residents aged 15 to 22, including high school and university students. It offers five specialized tracks: Hotels, Culinary Arts, Hospitality, Food Services, and Event Management. Programs will run from two to four weeks depending on the track, and include field training, mentorship sessions, site visits, and interactive workshops.
