(WHTM) — Michelin stars are awarded only to restaurants that display the epitome of culinary excellence through their cooking. Cities like Philadelphia are known for their vibrant food scenes, but no Pennsylvania restaurants have a Michelin star. The Michelin Guide lists restaurants awarded a Michelin star, one of the highest culinary achievements a restaurant can earn. Subscribe Now However, this could soon change. In May, the MICHELIN Guide announced it would be coming to Philadelphia and Boston for its newly minted MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities edition. 'We are thrilled for Boston and Philadelphia to join the MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities as both are premier destinations for gourmets to experience a rich diversity of cuisine and culinary history,' said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides. 'The local passion, talent and camaraderie in both Boston and Philadelphia is evident in their restaurant communities and the anonymous Inspectors look forward to spotlighting their unique experiences in both cities.' The announcement said that Michelin Inspectors are already in the field, making reservations and hunting down hidden gems and local favorites. Michelin added that it won't be long before Pennsylvanians start seeing familiar restaurants in the famed guide. Pennsylvania fried chicken eatery announces expansion According to Michelin, the selection process is determined by anonymous inspectors, who are full-time employees who are former restaurant and hospitality professionals. Several inspectors must eat at each restaurant before coming to a final decision. A Michelin star is awarded to the restaurant's food on the plate and nothing else, according to Michelin. NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It's one of the top honors a restaurant can receive: being recognized by the Michelin Guide for its cuisine. Over 1,500 U.S. eateries are published in the guide, and 260 have earned a coveted Michelin star. But why are none of those establishments in New Mexico? It turns out the Land of Enchantment joins a long list of states in the country that are not considered by Michelin Guides, and it's not because they lack top restaurants or food. As of 2025, Michelin inspectors only cover cities in seven states: New York, Chicago, California, Florida, Colorado, Texas, and Atlanta, and D.C. Los Ranchos De Albuquerque restaurant named 2025 James Beard award finalist That list will be expanding soon, as the Michelin Guide announced in April that it would include states in the South, including Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Michelin is always looking to expand, but only after certain standards or criteria are achieved. 'To publish the Michelin Guide [in a specific area], we need first and foremost culinary potential,' Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide, told Bon Appetit in 2024. 'Today, I have inspectors scouting about 20 destinations where we do not yet have a restaurant selection, but that we are considering for future years. It's always a several-year process because we must see the openings and the consistency.' But it's more than just consistency or 'culinary potential' that brings a Michelin Guide to town. In recent years, Michelin has partnered with local and state tourism boards to help fund the creation of a new guide for that area — but only after the inspectors have deemed the local food scene to be worthy. In 2023, The New York Times reported that California's tourism board had paid Michelin $600,000 in 2019 to cover the cost of expanding its culinary inspections beyond the Bay Area and Napa Valley. Tourism groups in Florida, Atlanta, Colorado and Texas all reportedly agreed to similar financial partnerships. When asked about these newer financial partnerships, Poullennec, speaking with Bon Appetit in 2024, suggested that the Michelin's arrangements with these tourism boards (or, as he called them, 'destination marketing organizations' or DMOs) help to defray the editorial expenses involved with producing the guides. 'The involvement of DMOs in establishing new Guides does not have any influence on the Inspectors' judgments regarding the destination assessment, the restaurants in the selection, or award distinctions,' the inspector told Nexstar. The Michelin Guide will host the inaugural American South Ceremony on Nov. 3 in Greenville, S.C. Why it matters: Michelin Guide Inspectors have been scoping out restaurants in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, which encompass the Guide's first new regional selection since its North American debut in 2005. Driving the news: The ceremony will reveal which restaurants in the South region will receive Michelin stars and other top honors from The Michelin Guide. It will take place at the Peace Center in downtown Greenville and it's invite-only. What they're saying:"South Carolina is home to southern staples, fresh seafood and a homegrown culinary community full of passion and innovation, making it the perfect place to celebrate the region's culinary talents," said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide. "Our anonymous Inspectors look forward to finally sharing their discoveries with the world," she added. The big picture: A Michelin star is one of the culinary world's top honors, and state tourism boards paid top dollar to bring the Guides to the South. Cities and states across the South will collectively contribute $1.65 million per year under a three-year contract to bring the Michelin Guide to the region, according to records obtained by Axios New Orleans. Zoom in: North Carolina tourism offices will pay $345,000 annually over multiple years for the chance to be included in the Michelin Guide's expansion into the South, Axios' Alex Sands previously reported. What's next: During the Nov. 3 ceremony, Michelin Guide will honor restaurants with one, two and three Michelin Stars, which identifies "establishments serving exceptional cuisine that's rich in flavor, remarkably executed and infused with the personality of a talented chef," according to their guidelines. Some restaurants will receive a Bib Gourmand, which is a "designation given to select restaurants that offer good quality food for a good value." Others will receive the Michelin Green Star, which "honors restaurants that are pioneers in sustainable gastronomy."
