Chapo's ex-lawyer elected Mexican judge
A former lawyer for jailed Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been elected a judge in a city neighboring the United States, the results of the country's first-ever judicial elections showed Tuesday. Silvia Delgado, 51, was a member of Guzman's legal team in Ciudad Juarez, where the Sinaloa cartel co-founder was detained before being extradited to the United States in 2017. She was elected a judge in the crime-plagued border city of Ciudad Juarez, results from the June 1 election showed. She received the second-highest vote of the five women who were elected to the bench in northern Chihuahua state, alongside five male judges. Delgado's candidacy was one of the most controversial in the election, which will make Mexico the world's only country to choose all of its judges and magistrates by popular vote. She argued that her defense of Guzman did not make her a criminal. "Every person has the right to counsel," she said, talking up her experience to voters. She was one of around 20 candidates identified by the rights group Defensorxs as "high-risk" for the legitimacy of the judiciary due to allegations of cartel links, corruption and sexual abuse. The Sinaloa cartel was one of six Mexican gangs designated terrorist organizations in February by US President Donald Trump. Mexicans were called on to elect 881 federal judges, including nine members of the Supreme Court, as well as hundreds of local judges and magistrates. An election for the remainder of the judiciary will be held in 2027. Boats are bursting into flames in South Florida. How common is this?
Last week, two boats in Fort Lauderdale went up in flames. Friday, six boats were charred at a Sunny Isles Beach dock. As it turns out, boats going up in flames is not uncommon in a state that is saturated with boats, statistics show. While the number of boat fires are trending higher in Fort Lauderdale — the site of another explosion in December, killing a boater who was fueling up at Lauderdale Marina — statewide, they've actually decreased over the past five years, according to vessel accidents' data compiled by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. READ MORE: Boat explodes off the beach in Fort Lauderdale, fire-rescue says So far, in Fort Lauderdale this year, there have been six boat fires, the city's Fire Rescue department said. The department's spokesman, Frank Guzman, noted that 'not all these vessel fires had significant damage.' Last year, there were 15 boat fires in Fort Lauderdale, up from four in 2021, with 11 each in 2022 and 2023, Guzman said. Florida has more registered boats than any other state Florida averages about 35 boat fires a year, according to the FWC, which notes in its latest annual report that the state also has more than 1 million registered vessels for recreation, making it 'the undisputed 'Boating Capital of the World.'' (Michigan has the second-most boat owners.) Over the past five years, boat fire numbers have fluctuated in the state, with 41 in 2020, 37 in 2021, 33 in 2022, and 30 in 2023, the latest data available, the FWC said. Out of the 685 reportable boat accidents in Florida in 2024, 33 stemmed from fires, 17 involving fuel and 16 caused by other factors. The majority of boat accidents in Florida — 209 — involved vessels hitting fixed objects, according to the FWC. Gas vapors likely cause of Sea Ray explosion Fuel was likely the cause of the explosion of a 39-foot Sea Ray cabin cruiser in the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale on Memorial Day. Out of the 15 people on board when a fireball shot out from inside the boat, 11 were hospitalized. The operator of the boat, 29-year-old Joshua Fifi, died days later at the hospital. READ MORE: Father of four dies after Memorial Day boat explosion off Fort Lauderdale Fire officials said the blast was likely caused by fuel vapors that ignited a flash fire when the boat was started. The source of the vapors and ignition is under investigation. It was like 'a fireball,' Guzman said. Boat safety tips Boating experts stress that boaters must open their engine compartment and turn on the blower fan before starting a boat. The fan, which removes gas fumes or any accumulated gasoline, should be run for three to five minutes. Boats have ventilation switches on the dash panel that should be switched on every time a boat is used. And, they add, boaters should take a sniff test and smell for any signs of gas vapors before starting a boat. READ MORE: Two boats exploded off Fort Lauderdale within 5 months. Tips to avoid a similar fate The FWC is still investigating the cause of a 30-foot boat that went up in flames just off the beach in Fort Lauderdale two days later. There was one person on board, who jumped off the vessel and swam to shore before paramedics took him to the hospital to be treated for injuries. There have also been damaging boat fires in other parts of South Florida, the most recent a blaze that ended up burning up six boats, including a 90-foot vessel, at a Sunny Isles Beach condominium dock early Friday morning. No one was injured in the fire, which was triggered by one boat going up in flames and the blaze spreading to five other boats. Authorities are investigating. Boat fire off Jupiter The same day the Sea Ray exploded in Fort Lauderdale, a 48-foot fishing yacht caught fire off Jupiter Inlet. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Three people were on board the vessel when it caught fire, the Coast Guard said in a statement on X. They were rescued by other boaters in the area who responded to the scene. No one was hurt, according to the Coast Guard. And, a May 14 fire at a Tavernier boat yard in the Florida Keys badly damaged several vessels that were dry docked, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

When West Virginia hit its lowest point of the season, utility player Armani Guzman was just getting started. A blowout loss to Arizona in the Big 12 tournament semifinals sent regular-season champion West Virginia to its ninth loss in 13 games — a momentum-killing stretch at the worst possible time heading into the NCAA tournament. Nearly forgotten from that game was a pair of late singles by Guzman in a pinch-hitting role. First-year coach Steve Sabins noticed, promoting the sophomore to a starting spot in the regional. It was the spark the Mountaineers sorely needed. Batting last in the lineup, Guzman went 8 for 12 with six RBIs in three games and was named regional MVP. The Mountaineers (44-14) beat host Clemson once and Kentucky twice to advance to their second straight super regional starting Saturday at No. 6 national seed LSU (46-15). "I bet there's never been a nine-hole hitter been a tournament MVP," Sabins said. 'What he did was epic." Guzman had shown a flash of stardom earlier this season. In an April 1 game at Ohio State, he reached over the right-field wall to take away a home run, then threw out a runner at first base for a double play. He is West Virginia's third-best hitter with a .337 average and leads the Mountaineers with 16 stolen bases. But from April 11 to May 22, Guzman was used sparingly as a defensive replacement and went just 1 for 8 at the plate. Guzman stayed patient until his turn came up again. 'His mentality has been so spot on,' Sabins said. 'You want to talk about a confident guy that's not arrogant. He is in such a strong place competing right now that he knows he'll have success.' Making his first start in nearly a month, Guzman hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth inning of a 4-3 win over Kentucky in the regional opener. In the clinching 13-12 win over the Wildcats on Sunday, the Mountaineers overcame deficits of 6-1 and 12-7. Guzman went 4 for 5 and his single in the eighth inning drove in the go-ahead run. 'I was a guy who didn't play the last month and a half, and I'm here in this position," he said. 'I think it's a big confidence boost to each guy. The confidence that we have in each other is huge.' Being used on defense in the outfield and at third base while often being inserted as a pinch hitter during the season, 'I just try to be an athlete," Guzman said. "Sabs talks about it all the time. His job is to place us where he thinks we best fit. My job is to play the game. So that's all I do.' Clutch all around As good as Guzman played, West Virginia needed all the gutsy individual performances it could get in the regional. 'That's just the type of group we are,' said catcher Logan Sauve, who went 5 for 15 in the series. 'We all stuck for each other and played for each other and wished for the kid behind us to do better than what we just did.' Griffin Kirn threw 117 pitches over seven innings in the opener, then returned two days later to pitch the ninth inning in relief and earn the save in the clinching win. Utility player Ben Lumsden, a starter a year ago who managed just four hits previously this season, started in place of veteran Grant Hussey at first base and had a breakout series in his home state with three hits and five RBIs. Getting refocused As a rookie head coach, Sabins, who took over for the retired Randy Mazey, saw new experiences throughout the season. West Virginia opened with 13 straight wins, captured its first outright Big 12 regular-season championship and set a school record for wins. But the final month of the season, when the losses were piling up, was mystifying. So team and individual meetings were held. Videos were reviewed. Highlight films were emphasized. 'We threw things into a fire and started over,' Sabins said. He even tried to figure out different ways to conduct practices. "You try to keep it light and intense at the same time, and you try to push the right buttons every step of the way,' Sabins said. Road confidence West Virginia's 24-5 road record is the best among teams in the super regionals. At Clemson, the visitors' bullpen is pinned in the left-field corner just a feet away from fans, and West Virginia's pitchers heard relentless banter from the stands. 'I was thankful we played at Clemson because I thought that environment at Clemson was loud and pretty raucous,' Sabins said. "You had those kids in the bullpen that were like touching our guys warming up. So I think our guys will be prepared in that avenue. 'Our team will go into anybody that we play for the remainder of the season believing that we can win the game if we play good baseball.'
