Academic fraud: Students with fake degrees clear US, UK visa interviews; caught at Hyderabad airport

HYDERABAD: In a worrying trend that highlights the growing sophistication of academic fraud, the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport has uncovered a racket involving students using forged academic credentials to secure student visas for the United States and the United Kingdom. In the past two weeks alone, four individuals were intercepted at the airport-despite having cleared formal visa interviews at foreign embassies-with fake degrees, some sourced from dubious education consultants. These candidates had successfully obtained student visas and enrolled in foreign universities. However, the deception unravelled during additional checks by BoI personnel before departure. The first breakthrough came on June 1 with the detention of Pakeeru Gopal Reddy, a 28-year-old from Parepalligudem in Nalgonda district. Gopal Reddy had earlier entered the US on a student visa with a forged BSc (computers) degree from Madurai Kamraj University and enrolled at Webster University, Missouri, in Sept 2023. After spending 15 months in the US, he returned to India citing personal reasons. However, in May 2024, during his attempt to re-enter the US, he was deported from Dallas airport due to an inactive Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) record. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Upon landing at RGIA, BoI officials subjected Gopal to intense questioning and document verification, which revealed his degree was fake. He confessed to obtaining it through Katoju Ashok, an agent operating under Sri Dhanalakshmi Overseas Private Limited in BN Reddy Nagar, Vanasthalipuram. Gopal was arrested on June 1, and Ashok a day later. 'Cases indicate role of education consultants' The arrests made us realise that candidates were securing fake degrees through certain education consultants and managing to obtain visas to the US and the UK. We decided to monitor this trend closely," a BoI official said. Following this, BoI officials intensified scrutiny and intercepted three more students en route to the UK. Mohammad Shahabazuddin, 26, of Hyderabad, was caught on June 9 with a fake BCom degree from Acharya Nagarjuna University (2021), a forged Intermediate certificate (2017), and bogus BTech certificates from two engineering colleges in Hyderabad. Shahabazuddin admitted to purchasing a fake SSC certificate from one Yakub in the city for Rs 1.5 lakh and fabricating the rest using software. He secured a UK student visa using these forged documents. A case was filed on June 10, and Shahabazuddin was taken into custody. Mohammed Azhar Hussain, 25, from Seetharampuram in Miryalaguda, was stopped on June 10 while boarding a flight to the UK via Dubai. Azhar confessed to using fake certificates from Capital University, Jharkhand, and a forged job letter arranged by Bharat from Emerge Migration Overseas Educational Consultancy in Miryalaguda. BoI filed a police complaint, and Azhar Hussain was remanded in custody. Srikanth Marthala, 26, from Guntur, was intercepted on June 12 with a fake BTech degree from Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation. He admitted to paying Rs 40,000 to Mohan Krishna, a Guntur-based agent, for the certificate. A case was registered, and Srikanth was also remanded in judicial custody. RGIA police, suspecting a broader pattern, are now expanding the probe to identify and arrest more agents and consultants involved in this fraudulent network. Investigations are ongoing.

Murder in Ghaziabad: 3 men kidnap and shoot dead 25-year-old, dump body in Hindon river

On the evening of June 7, Ankur, 25, had just finished having dinner with a friend. After dropping the friend off on his scooter, he was riding home alone, unaware that he was being followed. What allegedly followed was a chilling sequence of events — a kidnapping, a cold-blooded murder, and a plan to erase all evidence. His body was recovered nearly two weeks later on Thursday. Ankur, a resident of Ganauli village in Ghaziabad's Loni, was known to a young woman, related to one of the accused. Police said the accused had warned Ankur to stay away from her. When he didn't listen, the accused decided to kill him with the help of his two friends, police said. According to the Loni Police, the trio waited for the right moment to catch Ankur on the night of June 7. When they saw him returning home alone on his scooter, they allegedly blocked his path with their car on the Siroli-Chirodi Road. As Ankur stopped, two of them pulled him into the vehicle, and his scooter was shoved into the bushes nearby, said officers. They drove to a deserted stretch of a canal near the village of Jawli. There, the accused allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and fired four to five rounds — the bullets struck Ankur's head, chest, and hand, which killed him instantly, said police. The trio spread a plastic sheet on the rear seat of their car, where they placed the body. Later that night, they drove to the Hindon River bridge and threw the body into the water, hoping it would never be found. Then they walked a short distance to find a tap, where they washed the blood off their hands, clothes, and the car, police said. But they weren't done. The next day, around 4 am, the three returned to the spot where Ankur's scooter had been hidden. They set it on fire using petrol from its tank, and one of the accused also burned his bloodstained T-shirt. Later, they loaded the charred scooter and dumped it into the bushes. For nearly a week, they lived as if nothing had happened, keeping an eye on the river, worried that the body might float up. Then came June 13. That's when Gopal, Ankur's brother, approached the Loni Police and filed a kidnapping complaint. A case was registered under relevant sections, and a police team began tracing the missing wrestler. On Thursday, nearly six days later, police recovered Ankur's body from the Hindon River, confirming the family's worst fears. That same day, one of the accused was shot in the leg during a shootout with the police and arrested. From the spot, police recovered a pistol believed to be the murder weapon, four empty cartridges, and a 9mm shell. A few hours later, another arrest followed — one of the two friends of the accused was picked up during a routine check near the Banthla flyover. With his arrest, police recovered the Swift car used in the crime and Ankur's scorched scooter. During questioning, police said the friend admitted to everything: the motive, the plan, the route, and where the body had been dumped. The third accomplice has also been arrested, said police.

Broccoli and cashew stir-fry: A Malaysian twist

Malaysian chef Sugen Gopal opened London's Roti King in 2014 and its popularity skyrocketed – with queues famously out the door. Since then, Gopal's Corner – and several other outlets, his newest in Brighton – have opened and now he's released his debut cookbook, Roti King. Here is one of his recipe to make at home. This side dish comes together extremely quickly and would make a great accompaniment to most meals. Here, I use Tenderstem broccoli, but you could easily swap it out for other seasonal green vegetables, such as purple sprouting broccoli, asparagus or green beans. The butter is browned slightly, which gives the whole dish a nutty flavour, further amplified by the toasted cashews.' Serves: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes Ingredients: 300g Tenderstem broccoli 2 tsp salted butter 50g cashews, roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tsp oyster sauce 2 tbsp crispy fried shallots (homemade or store-bought), to serve Method: 1. Start by blanching the broccoli in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, then drain and plunge into ice-cold water. Leave to drain in a colander. 2. Melt the butter in large pan over a medium heat, and once bubbling, add the cashews and then the garlic. Stir frequently and cook until the butter is just starting to brown. 3. Transfer the garlic and cashew mixture to a plate, before adding the drained broccoli to the pan, keeping it over a medium heat. 4. Add the oyster sauce, and fry for 2–3 minutes until the broccoli has started to soften a little (but being careful not to overcook). Add the garlic and nuts back into the pan, stir together and serve garnished with the crispy fried shallots. The Independent

Anganwadi workers protest demanding inclusion of welfare schemes

Adoni: A large number of Anganwadi workers under the aegis of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) took out a rally in Adoni on Monday, demanding the extension of government welfare schemes to them. The rally commenced at the Municipal Grounds and proceeded through Bhima Circle before culminating in a protest in front of the Mandal Revenue Officer's (MRO) office. CITU town unit president Tippanna, secretary Gopal, and mandal leaders J Ramamjaneyulu and B Veerareddy addressed the gathering, along with Anganwadi union leaders Padma, Renuka, and Somakka. Speaking at the dharna, the leaders expressed serious concern that Anganwadi workers are being portrayed as government employees in online systems. This classification, they argued, is preventing them from receiving benefits under various welfare schemes. They pointed out that not a single welfare scheme was extended to Anganwadi workers during the tenure of the previous government. 'Despite repeated representations to the authorities, our pleas were ignored,' the leaders said. During a 42-day strike in the past, the then government had verbally assured them that they would be made eligible for welfare schemes. However, no official Government Order (GO) was issued in this regard. As a result, the current government's welfare programmes, many of which are based on the income eligibility criterion of Rs 12,000 per month, are not being extended to them. The workers noted that their current monthly honorarium stands at Rs.11,500 — which makes them eligible for these schemes — yet they are still being excluded. 'We urge the government to show compassion and ensure that all applicable welfare benefits are extended to Anganwadi workers without delay,' they appealed. At the conclusion of the protest, a formal representation outlining their demands and grievances was submitted to MRO Ramesh. A large number of Anganwadi workers participated in theprotest.
