Jordan Spieth withdraws due to injury for first time in PGA Tour career

Jordan Spieth withdrew from the Travelers Championship during Thursday's first round because of a neck/upper back injury, something he never had done in his PGA Tour career. Spieth, 31, pulled out on the 13th hole at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., after Golf Channel cameras spotted him dealing with the issue earlier in the round and eventually getting treatment during the turn. He was 5-over through 12 holes when he finally decided to withdraw, the first time he had done so in 297 PGA Tour starts. 3 Jordan Spieth crouches while grabbing his neck on the 12th hole during the first round of the Travelers Championship on June 19, 2025. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect 'Everything was great in my gym session, and I've been very, very excited to go out and play. Things have been getting better and better, and then my right scap just kind of locked — like tightened midway through the warmup, and I just kept hitting, and then all of a sudden it was moving up, everything around it started to — and then it was over the left and then it was like everything, so I stopped,' he said, according to the PGA Tour website. 'It was both sides of my neck and upper back, and then I moved over to — I quit 30 minutes early from my warmup and came back to the table with my physio who was out there on the range … I just wasn't moving very well … then I hit my tee shot on 13, and it legitimately really hurt. I was walking off that tee, and I'm like, if it's even harder to turn, then I'm not going to be able to make a backswing that's even useful, and that's what happened on the bunker shot.' 3 Jordan Spieth gets into a golf cart after withdrawing from the tournament on the 13th hole with a neck injury during the first round of the Travelers Championship. Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Spieth, who had won the Travelers in 2017, also said the injury was unexpected and random. The golfer had recently returned to action after a wrist surgery forced him to miss the back half of the 2024 golf schedule. 3 Jordan Spieth plays a shot from a bunker on the 12th hole during the first round of the Travelers Championship. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Spieth has had eight top-25 finishes this year and this had been his 10th start in his last 12 weeks. 'I was looking at this being the strongest one, and I was very confident about that. Everything I had done in practice and the pro-am showed me it's going to be a really good event. It's just a very weird circumstance. It's disappointing,' he said. Scottie Scheffler and Austin Eckroat, who both shot 8-under 62s, share the lead after the first round.

Scottie Scheffler hits a perfect shot and plenty of great ones for a 62 to share lead at Travelers in Connecticut

'This is a nice tonic compared to last week in terms of it's a slightly more benign golf course and the penalty for missing isn't quite as severe,' McIlroy said. Advertisement Scheffler faced the hot afternoon when a refreshing breeze turned into a strong wind, and he wasted no time getting in the mix with four birdies in six holes and a 30 on the front nine. And then came the par-5 13th, 236 yards away into the wind, over a pond to a pin on the right. It was perfect — that's coming from golf's No. 1 player — and settled 10 feet away for eagle. 'That 3-iron I hit in there was really nice,' Scheffler said. 'It was pretty much exactly what I was trying to do. It was kind of one where I had to hit it really solid in order to get it there with the water short, and I just did pretty much exactly what I wanted to and it felt nice.' Advertisement Dialed on a Thursday 😎 Scottie Scheffler eagles the 13th to move to 8-under and in a tie for the lead. 📺 Golf Channel — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) McIlroy was at 6 under along with Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark. Another shot back was Cameron Young. He was in the mix late on Sunday at Oakmont, and started the Travelers Championship by going from the rough to the bunker, and then a three-putt from 25 feet for a double bogey. 'I managed to get around Oakmont for four days with no doubles and I made it zero holes here,' Young said. 'Typically that's not kind of what you expect around here.' Not to worry. He followed with eight birdies in a day with a new routine. His caddie went down with a stomach virus and the best option was to turn the bag over to his father, Dave Young, recently retired as the longtime pro at Sleepy Hollow. The surprise was Eckroat, already a two-time winner on the PGA Tour but struggling so much this year that he has only two finishes in the top 20 and eight missed cuts. The last two weeks served him well, however, as Eckroat said he figured out how to eliminate the miss to the left. He played the last six holes in 5-under par, starting with a 35-foot eagle putt on No. 13. 'I wasn't fearing the left ball today, which is huge, and then whenever you're feeling comfortable with other things, other things start to fall in line,' Eckroat said. 'Felt great over the putter, and just a really solid day, and I felt confident, which it was nice to feel that this season. It's been a while.' US Open champion J.J. Spaun felt the fatigue, and the steamy heat didn't help the cause. Playing along Scheffler, he was hanging in there until it took him two chips and two putts to cover 40 feet for a double bogey on No. 12, and a bogey-bogey finish for a 73. Advertisement Jordan Spieth didn't even make it to the finish line. This was the first time Spieth didn't need a sponsor exemption for a $20 million signature event, and he only lasted 13 holes when his shoulder blade got tight on the range, spread across the back of his neck to the other side and left him no choice but to withdraw. Related : Scheffler saying he hit a great shot is worth paying attention to because it doesn't happen very often. He rarely hits it offline. But this was something special. 'Hit it really solid and really straight, just barely right of the pin, and kept it nice flat flight, get it to go through the wind, and it was good,' he said. In fact, he could only recall two other shots in recent years — a 6-iron on the fifth hole in the final round at the 2022 Masters, a 9-iron he hit on the par-3 third hole in the final round of the 2023 Players Championship. 'Those are shots that kind of get lost in terms of the tournament,' he said. 'I'm not even sure if I birdied No. 3 at The Players, and I know I didn't birdie No. 5 during the Masters. But those are the shots when you're playing and you're in the moment, those are the ones that give me a lot of confidence.' Scottie Scheffler starts strong at Sit back and enjoy highlights from his 8-under 62 at TPC River Highlands ⬇️ — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) It's hard to imagine him needing much more of that. He hasn't finished out of the top 10 since The Players in March, a stretch of eight tournaments. He didn't hit the ball very well for two days at the US Open and still had an outside chance on the back nine Advertisement And in his 19th round at the TPC River Highlands, he posted his lowest score at 62.

Jordan Spieth withdraws from Travelers Championship with injury; first WD in PGA Tour career

Thursday was Jordan Spieth's 297th start on the PGA Tour. It's also the first time he has withdrawn from an event. Spieth, the 13-time PGA Tour winner and 2017 champion at the Travelers Championship, withdrew Thursday during the first round. Golf Channel cameras caught Spieth dealing with some sort of injury early on in the round and receiving treatment when he made the turn. Spieth looked in discomfort on nearly every full swing, and he finally decided to WD on the 13th hole. Spieth was 5 over with five bogeys and no birdies in his 12 holes he completed. Multiple times, he dropped clubs when swinging and looked to be dealing with discomfort in his neck, shoulder and upper back area. Advertisement This season, Spieth has made 13 of 15 cuts and has eight top-25 finishes. This was his 10th start in the past 12 weeks as he chases his first win since the 2022 RBC Heritage. Sinking nearly 200 feet in putts, Jeeno Thitikul leads a 'home' major at PGA Frisco

Sinking nearly 200 feet in putts, Jeeno Thitikul leads a 'home' major at PGA Frisco FRISCO, Texas – It's not often that a player gets to sleep in her own bed at a major. For Jeeno Thitikul, that's especially important given that she has her blackout shades. 'Every time I got to Evian, it's so bright like early morning,' said Thitikul. 'Like in ShopRite, in U.S. Open, like 5 a.m. in the morning, it's so bright.' But with her extra shades, Thitikul can sleep in til at least 7 a.m., which will come in handy as the week goes along, as she's likely going to have nothing but late tee times going forward after an opening 4-under 68 at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East. After a shaky start that found her 2-over par through five holes, Thitikul, 22, birdied five of the next six holes. She needed just 25 putts in her opening round to take a one-stroke lead over Minjee Lee. The top three players in the world were paired together in the opening round. No. 1 Nelly Korda opened with an even-par 72 while No. 3 Lydia Ko finished at 3 over. 'I'm pretty happy with my first round in the conditions,' said Korda. 'It was pretty windy. It was hot. It definitely takes a toll on you, the Texas heat.' More: KPMG Women's PGA live updates: Leaderboard, scores from LPGA major at Fields Ranch East What's with Jeeno Thitikul's color-coded grips? Thitikul, who makes her home in the Castle Hills area when she's staying in the U.S., travels the world with her manager. Her parents likely won't come out to watch her play outside of Thailand this year. To help her father follow along from home, Thitikul has a color-coded system with her grips. Her dad came up with the idea when she was around 10, and she's used the same bright color codes now for several years. Golf Channel highlighted the setup during the broadcast in Frisco, and Thitikul joked that she might have to change it now. Thitikul's putter was white-hot on Thursday One club that didn't need color coding was Thitikul's putter, and it was hot throughout the balmy day. The star seemed to drop everything she touched, including a 60-foot birdie putt. Incredibly, she lipped out a 76-footer on 18, but she finished making just under 200 feet of putts while playing partners Ko and Korda combined to make just over 108 feet. The best player on tour without a major, Thitikul currently ranks first on tour in strokes gained total and first in putts per green in regulation. She ranks behind only Korda in scoring with a 69.09 average. A victory this week would move Thitikul into No. 1 in the world, should Korda finish 11th or worse. When asked how she's dealing with pressure to win her first major, Thitikul laughed as she said in every major, she's just trying to make the cut. 'I'm pretty happy with all I've achieved,' she said. 'If I can get it, it would be great, but if not, I don't have anything to regret about.' "It would be really great to win it, and definitely I can tell that it would be like everyone dreams to win a major."
