‘No. 1? Why not,' says coach Herry on Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik's world ranking push
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — A strong showing at the Japan and China Opens next month could lift national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to the world No. 1 ranking and boost their seeding prospects at the world championships, said head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. He said clinching the world's top ranking could help the Olympic bronze medallists secure a better seeding at the world championships in Paris this August. 'Aaron and Wooi Yik are already ranked second in the world, which I think is good enough to help with their seeding at the world championships. 'But if they can become world No. 1 before then, why not? Of course, that would be even better,' he told reporters after a national team training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today. Aaron-Wooi Yik are ranked second with 89,870 points, just 1,220 points behind their compatriots and professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. However, Herry said the world No. 1 ranking is not the top priority for Aaron-Wooi Yik, as it is more important to be well prepared for all tournaments. Aaron-Wooi Yik are the first and only Malaysians to have won a world badminton title, achieving the feat in 2022 in Tokyo after defeating Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. — Bernama

Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, Soon Huat-Shevon to join Road to Gold programme

(Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Professional men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who are currently world No 1, and mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie have pledged their commitment to the Road to Gold (RTG) Programme for the 2025 cycle. Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said that through RTG, they would receive extensive performance-related support as they aimed to not only qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28), but also to create history for Malaysia in the US. 'RTG has always supported athletes who fulfil the criteria of the programme, and we hope this additional support will spur them in their pursuit of excellence this year,' she said on Facebook today. Last week, Yeoh announced that eight badminton players – world No 2 men's doubles duo Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and their teammates Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, top national women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, as well as national mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei – had agreed to join the programme. Other athletes joining the programme are weightlifter Mohd Aniq Kasdan and track cyclists Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri and Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, as well as squash player S Sivasangari. Yeoh also announced that national women's recurve archery trio Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi, Syaqiera Mashayikh and Nurul Azreena Fazil, as well as squash player Ng Eain Yow, had agreed to join the Fast Track RTG programme. The RTG project, introduced by the youth and sports ministry in April 2023, is a national initiative aimed at coordinating Malaysia's efforts to win its first gold medal at the Olympic Games, with a focus on the Paris 2024 and LA28 editions.

Goh-Izzuddin's world No. 1 spot could soon be under threat if they don't lift their game

Men's doubles shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who surged to the coveted spot last month, are struggling for consistency and are in danger of relinquishing their position if they don't find a way to improve fast. Sze Fei-Izzuddin's run in the Indonesian Open ended in the quarter-finals after they narrowly went down 19-21, 21-9, 19-21 to world No. 8 homesters Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza at a packed Istora Senayan in Jakarta on Friday. The independent pair were looking good to make the semis when they led 17-14 and 19-17 in the deciding game but could not hold on and ended up losing in 57 minutes. It was Sze Fei-Izzuddin's third quarter-final exit in a row after they also suffered the same fate in the Malaysian Masters and Singapore Open. The duo have failed to progress to the last four in any of their competitions since capturing the Indian Open title in January. Sze Fei-Izzuddin will remain as the world No. 1 for now after their closest challengers for the top spot, Denmark's world No. 2 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rassmussen and world No. 3 teammates Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik suffered early exits in the Indonesian tourney but could be overtaken next month if they don't rediscover their best form. Sze Fei-Izzuddin have two important back-to-back tournaments coming up next month – the Japan Open from July 15-20 and China Open from July 22-27. The pair won both the competitions last year and will be under pressure to reach the finals again in both to protect their ranking points and maintain their No. 1 position. Sze Fei-Izzuddin admitted that after losing to Sabar-Moh they needed to get used to the pressure of being at the top. "Our opponents controlled their emotions well during the last few points while we were quite nervous," said Izzuddin in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Sze Fei said: "These are the things we need to improve on and we hope to do better next time. "The pressure is always there. It depends on how we handle the expectations." Going through ups and downs is normal and the onus is now on Sze Fei-Izzuddin to fight back and prove that they deserve to remain as the world's best pair.

(AFP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Professional men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani led the charge of five Malaysian pairs into the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Open badminton tournament at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, today. In the second round of the Super 1000-level tournament, the world No 1 pair held off a tough challenge from compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong to seal a 21-14, 16-21, 21-14 victory in 54 minutes. The India Open champions will next face Indonesia's Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. Joining Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin are Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who defeated compatriots Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King 14-21, 21-11, 21-15. The world No 7 pair will go up against India's Satwisairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty. In the mixed doubles, second seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei lived up to expectations by reaching the quarter-finals after ousting Denmark's Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch 21-9, 21-12 in just 31 minutes. They will next meet another Danish pair in Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund. Also making it into the last eight are Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who defeated Indonesia's Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah 21-12, 21-17 to set up a clash with Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran. Meanwhile, national top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah secured their spot in the quarter-finals after staging a comeback to beat Indonesia's Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti 18-21, 21-16, 21-17. The world No 4 pair will face Japan's Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi, who overcame Malaysia's Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting 21-15, 21-16 in the second round. In the men's singles, Malaysia's Leong Jun Hao was eliminated in the second round after failing to match the prowess of China's fourth seed Li Shi Feng, losing 18-21, 18-21.

Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin fail to make it an all-Malaysian semi-final in Jakarta

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Goh Sze Fei- Nur Izzuddin Rumsani failed to make it an all-Malaysian semi-final in the men's doubles after they fell to Indonesian pair Sabar Karwayan Gutama- Reza Pahlevi Isfahani in three games. The Malaysian world No 1 pair were beaten 21-19, 9-21, 21-19 in a pulsating 56-minute match that had the home crowd at the Istora Senayan, Jakarta on their feet cheering. With this defeat, hopes of an all-Malaysian semi-final between Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin and their compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun failed to materialise. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin have met the world No 8 pair thrice so far with the Indonesian pair winning twice. Earlier, world No 7 pair Wei Chong-Kai Wun defeated India's Chiraq Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in straight games to qualify for the semi-finals. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin won the India Open championship title in January but failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals since then. They have won eight BWF titles so far with the Super 1000 series being elusive. The Indonesian Open is one such event offering a total cash prize of US$1.45 million. The winners of the doubles events stand to earn US$107,300 (RM452,289), and the runners-up US$50,750 (RM214,520). The semi-finalists take home US$20,300 (RM85,898). Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will take home US$9,062 (RM38,296) as quarter-finalists.
