Teen banned from entering Gloucester after man is attacked

A 16-year-old boy has been banned from entering a city after an elderly man was assaulted. The teenager has been charged with assault after a 76-year-old man was attacked in Gloucester on Tuesday. The boy is due to appear at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court on 4 July. A 15-year-old boy from Gloucester has also been arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released under investigation. It follows a number of reports of anti-social behaviour across the city in the last few weeks, police said. The force issued a dispersal order which ran until 20:00 BST on Thursday, enabling police to move individuals on from a designated area if they are causing a nuisance. If the individuals return to the area within 48 hours and refuse to leave, they can be part of his bail conditions, the Wolverhampton teenager has been banned from entering Gloucester ahead of his trial hearing.

UK weather: Brits to bask in glorious 33C today as heatwave ‘likely' this weekend after hottest day of year so far

SUN-worshipping Brits are set to bask in glorious weather as highs of 33C are forecast today - with a heatwave predicted this weekend. Londoners face record-breaking temperatures for the second day running after the mercury hit 32C in Heathrow, west London, yesterday. 7 7 7 Beaches, parks and pubs across the country will be packed as revellers look to lap up the sunshine and make the most of the warm weather. Temperatures in York are expected to reach as high as 29C, with Gloucester also set to register the same heat today. Some areas on the west and east coast will be slightly cooler at 24C, but people will still be able to soak up the rays. Spectators at sporting events such as Royal Ascot and the Queens Club tennis tournament will be able to top up their tans in the sun. By this afternoon, a number of areas in Britain are expected to have passed the heatwave criteria, according to the Met Office. An official heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain temperature for three consecutive days. Thresholds can vary from 25C to 28C in different parts of the UK. Met Office weather forecaster Dan Stroud said: "We're expecting the hot and dry conditions to continue, it does turn a little bit hazier in the west during the course of Friday. "We're still expecting temperatures to reach the low 30s, 31C, 32C fairly widely, maybe seeing 33C." The warm weather will spread to the south and east of the country on Saturday, with 32C predicted in London and 31C in Cambridge. Mr Stroud confirmed that Sunday will slightly cooler, but another warm day across the country - with temperatures likely to hit the late to mid 20s. Over the last few days, Brits have flocked to the seaside and rivers so they can take a quick dip to cool off. Others have been spotted sunbathing in parks instead and making the most of their lunch breaks. UK's 5-day forecast Today: Dry with sunny spells once again, although somewhat cloudier than yesterday. Breezy along southern and eastern coasts. Feeling very warm, and locally hot. Tomorrow: Very warm and humid with sunny spells, thundery showers moving north and east through the day, heaviest over northern England. Turning fresher from the west later. Hot in the east. Sunday to Tuesday: A fresher and breezier spell of weather from Sunday and into next week. Whilst showers are possible at times, prolonged dry periods are likely with warm sunny spells at times. It comes as an amber heat health alert has been issued for the whole of England from 12pm on Thursday until 9am on Monday. Officials have warned that soaring June temperatures could mean a "likely rise in deaths in those 65 and over". The alert - a step up from the yellow heat health alert issued earlier this week - warned that "significant impacts are likely" across health and social care services because of high temperatures. One Royal Ascot spectator was taken to hospital yesterday, with 42 others given medical attention on site for heat-related illness during the prestigious horse racing event. The UK's June temperature record stands at 35.6C, which was set in Southampton in 1976. Current forecasts suggest the record is unlikely to be broken this time - but it will come close. A warning against wildfires has also been issued by the Fire Brigade, as firefighters have responded to more than 500 across England and Wales this year so far. As of yesterday, 564 wildfire incidents have been responded to by English and Welsh fire and rescue services, which is a 717% increase on the same period in 2024. 7 7 7 7

Gloucester have spent 'wisely'

Gloucester have spent their money "wisely" this season, believes director of rugby George Cherry and Whites released 13 senior players this summer, with 13 new faces signed heading into the 2025-26 narrowly missed out on a place in the Premiership play-offs last season, finishing fifth in the table, just two points behind Bristol despite winning the same number of matches."The way we've recruited for next season is we've got a bigger squad, we've got an unbelievable amount of talent," Skivington told BBC Radio Gloucestershire."We're a more talented squad next year, there's a few [new players] we're hedging our bets on - some are going to come through, some aren't. "They haven't all got the experience of 200 caps in the Premiership but we've spent our money really wisely and for Gloucester that is really important. The model is different." Making Gloucester a sustainable club has been the aim of the owners for a number of years since the Covid-19 the 10 Premiership clubs, Gloucester were the closest to breaking even when the most recent set of accounts was released for 2022-23, although their debt still totalled £541,000 that players including full-back Santiago Carreras, centre Chris Harris and back-row Ruan Ackermann, who amassed more than 400 club appearances between them, are among those exiting Gloucester have increased their squad size from 35 to 40 for next signings blend youth and experience and include Ireland fly-half Ross Byrne, South African back row James Venter and New Zealand prop Nepo Laulala plus full-back Ben Redshaw, scrum-half Mike Austin and centre Will said it would have cost a "huge amount of money" to keep some of the players who have left and that the club is working towards more strength in depth. "We lost a couple of lads in key positions this season and we had to really anchor down, push people in and there were some really costly games for us," he said."I think we've spent our money smartly over the next couple of years." Gloucester have not finished in the Premiership play-offs since Skivington was appointed in 2020, but he believes they took a "massive step forward" last term after finishing ninth in the table the previous signing of scrum-half Tomos Williams proved to be a masterstroke, with the Welshman helping spearhead a new-look attacking style, and going on to win Premiership player of the Seb Atkinson, fly-half Charlie Atkinson and second row Arthur Clark have also all been called up to Steve Borthwick's England training squad this week, before their match against France."Tommy was outstanding and got all of the headlines but if you look at Arthur Clark, Freddie Thomas, the spine of our team was young Gloucester boys," Skivington said."Everything is done with purpose and I think we've got a really young, hungry squad with some really good senior players sitting in there which will drive the squad forward. Everyone, bar one or two, is on two or three-year deals."
