SIFF opens with record-breaking premiere rate

SHANGHAI, June 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A news report from The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) raised the curtain on June 13, launching 10 days of cinematic celebration that will run through June 22. With a record-breaking lineup and a dynamic fusion of art and industry, this year's festival sets a new benchmark in scale, diversity, and ambition. The 27th SIFF received more than 3,900 submissions from 119 countries and regions, the highest total in its history. Among them, more than 2,800 films were submitted for competition in the five Golden Goblet Award categories. Notably, this year's festival includes more than 1,820 world premieres and over 520 international premieres. The combined premiere rate exceeds 80 percent, setting a new festival record. The Golden Goblet jury — comprising 21 members from 13 countries and regions —is chaired by Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore. The jury includes a younger-than-usual cohort of creatives, especially in the Asian New Talent category, with an average age of just 35. Their diverse backgrounds and fresh perspectives are expected to bring bold insights to this year's selections. Film lovers can look forward to over 400 films screened across approximately 1,500 sessions, including around 100 in-person Q&A sessions with filmmakers. These screenings cover a wide range of genres, themes, and styles, reflecting SIFF's commitment to both artistic excellence and audience engagement. In addition to the film showcase, industry-focused events will shine a spotlight on the future of cinema. The SIFFORUM, SIFF Masterclass, and International Film & TV Market will gather top professionals for high-level discussions, trend forecasting, and cross-border collaboration. SIFF also continues to support emerging talent. This year's SIFF ING focuses on two cutting-edge creative tracks — AIGC and vertical video — to discover, encourage, and nurture the next generation of filmmakers. Related events will be held from June 20 to 21. Special events such as the Belt and Road Film Week, Sci-Fi Film Week, and SIFF XR will zero in on emerging sectors, new technologies, and cross-industry convergence — offering fresh perspectives and expanding the possibilities of global cinema. The Golden Goblet Award Ceremony will be held on June 21 at the Shanghai Grand Theatre, where the festival will honor outstanding artistic achievements from around the world. Shanghai Jury Chair Giuseppe Tornatore Says Picking Film Fest Winners 'Is Actually Very Simple'

Oscar-winner Giuseppe Tornatore, jury head of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), says he will be looking for films that touch his heart as he chairs selection of this year's Golden Goblet Award winners. 'When I enter a film screening and close my eyes, I always return to the feeling of being an audience member,' Tornatore said Friday during the Shanghai jury's meeting with the international media. 'I always hope that the film will bring me a pleasant surprise every time I go to the cinema.'The Italian filmmaker is best known for his Academy Award-winner Cinema Paradiso (1988), a film in which a young boy is swept away by the magic of the movies — and the 69-year-old Tornatore said that was the feeling he would be chasing throughout SIFF's 10-day run. More from The Hollywood Reporter Adult Swim Tackles Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones in Latest Series 'Thug Life' Review: Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's Long-Awaited Reunion Falls Frustratingly Short of Its Potential Cannes Lions CEO Complains: "Creatives Are Feeling Less Confident" 'Every time I go to the cinema to watch a movie, I don't want to have a preconceived idea or specific expectation of what I want to see,' said the filmmaker. 'For us judges, actually choosing who will eventually win should be a simple matter. The movie that wins an award must be able to touch the depths of each judge's heart. Looking at it this way, this selection process is actually very simple.' Tornatore is joined on Shanghai's main jury by a trio of Chinese talent — director Yang Lina, actor-director Huang Bo and actress Yong Mei — alongside Argentinean filmmaker Iván Fund, Greek producer Thanassis Karathanos and Indian director Kiran Rao. The group's task is to choose from 12 wildly diverse international productions, which were shortlisted from a record 3,900 submissions, according to festival organizers. On the local front, Chinese director Wang Tong's ambitious genre-bender Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts, which mixes noir-tinged drama with social realism, generated some of the most vocal buzz this week during SIFF's pre-festival media preview screenings. The other Chinese features in the main competition are fest-favorite Cao Baoping's high-voltage comedy One Wacky Summer and Qiu Sheng's domestic drama My Father's Son. SIFF is keen to hype its role as a window into talents and trends emerging in Chinese cinema. The event is screening around 60 Chinese-language movies across its five competitions, including several world premieres and restored classics. For their part, the Golden Goblet jury is keen to dig in. 'I very happy that three Chinese films have been nominated this time, but of course, there are many other excellent films from all over the world that have been nominated, too,' said Huang. 'This diversity actually ensures that the final outcome is very honest. It's like if we all drank the same drink. Some would like spicy, sweet, salty or slightly bitter flavors. This kind of balance is really important. It ensures a certain level of objectivity that makes everyone feel more rational.' There's also early buzz surrounding Swiss director Nicolas Steiner's hypnotic dive into magical realism, You Believe in Angels, Mr. Drowak? (Germany, Switzerland); Poland's tension-packed theater-based drama Loss of Balance (Korek Bojanowski); and Portuguese director António Ferreira's The Scent of Things Remembered (Portugal-Brazil), which stars the impressive José Martins as a former soldier forced to confront his demons. Rounding out the selection is the Chile/U.K./France co-production After the Fog from British-German filmmaker Miriam Heard, Black Red Yellow (Kyrgyzstan) from Aktan Arym Kubat, Flavia Castro's Cyclone (Brazil), Luisa from Germany's Julia Roesler, Japan's On Summer Sand by Shinya Tamada, and the Argentina/Spain/Chile co-production The Reborn from Santiago Esteves. 'I think the films that are on offer are clearly some of the best films made this year in the world,' added Rao at Friday's presser. 'So we really will have, I'm sure, a lot to discuss and a difficult choice to make — but there's a feast for us to watch and enjoy.' Opening films at Filmhouse – and finally the programme

The very first film which will welcome audiences back to the newly renovated Filmhouse Edinburgh will be Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso (1988). Filmhouse has always shown different films from mainstream cinemas in town, and its new programme for the first weeks shows it will be no different. The long-awaited reopening is now only a couple of weeks away after the two and a half year closure – and cinema goers may now book tickets. Rod White, Programming Director of Filmhouse, said: 'Looking into the films that simply didn't make it on to Edinburgh cinema screens at all during Filmhouse's closure only hammered home the need for it in this great City of Culture. It's been tough – whilst Filmhouse was closed – to watch some brilliant films come and go from cinemas without being able to offer a venue to watch them in… The good news is, Filmhouse has never been a better place to watch a film (and talk about it afterward!) than it is today and we simply cannot wait to welcome everyone back, or, for the first time!' The hand-picked programme will include Filmhouse patron actor, Jack Lowden, in a film by Edinburgh based filmmaker Matt Palmer. This will be a free double-bill of the gutsy thriller Calibre(2018) starring Lowden and Tony Curran alongside Palmer's hit horror Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) which debuted at No.1 on Netflix on its release earlier in the year and will have its first ever public cinema screening at Filmhouse. Matt will also take part in a Q&A after the screening. Lotte Reiniger's classic feature length paper cut animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)will screen in a special event soundtracked with live music by Edinburgh based musical improvisers and innovators S!nk in a transportive performance filled with swirling, spiralling strings, saxophones, accordion, percussion and voices. Also screening at the cinema are a selection of recent acclaimed films from around the world from new and established filmmakers including Payal Kapadia's soulful All We Imagine As Light, Sébastien Marnier's thrilling Origin of Evil, Christian Petzold's riveting Afire, Gints Zilbalodis's enchantinganimation Flow, Hlynur Pálmason's nuanced drama Godland, Alice Rohrwacher's radically adventurous film La Chimera, Maryam Moghadam & Behtash Sanaeeha's joyous My Favourite Cake,Mario Martone's brilliantly shot Nostalgia, Rodrigo Sorogoyen's tense thriller The Beasts, Ilker Çatak's uncompromising The Teachers' Lounge, Alexandre de La Patellière & Matthieu Delaporte energetic take on Count of Monte Cristo, Manuela Martelli's compelling noir 1976, Víctor Erice's mysterious Close Your Eyes, Robert Zemeckis's Here and Celine Song's acclaimed Past Lives. 70mm engagements at the cinema will include Brady Corbet's award-winning The Brutalist and Christopher Nolan's epic Oppenheimer alongside Robert Egger's Nosferatu on 35mm. On opening weekend, audiences can also enjoy Martyn Robertson's acclaimed new film Make It To Munich, an inspiring documentary which follows 18-year-old Ethan Walker, who just months after nearly losing his life in an accident, embarks on a 1200km cycle ride to Munich for Scotland's Euros opening game against Germany. Ethan himself will attend a special Q&A screening on Filmhouse's opening day, alongside the film's director Martyn Robertson and former Motherwell, Chelsea, Everton and Scotland winger Pat Nevin. Tickets are on sale now via the Filmhouse website. In total once all four screens are open there will be 340 seats – all of which are new and have more legroom. The foyer has been reorganised to become a more welcoming space. The completely refurbished Filmhouse Bar will be able to seat 100 people for lunch and dinner, with drinks available throughout the day, catering for the many communities who enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere, and placing an emphasis on produce from Edinburgh and Scotland, offering great food and drink alongside environmental sustainability. Filmhouse fans will be pleased to know that the cinema's world-famous nachos are staying on the menu. Over the next few months, Filmhouse will once again partner with many of Scotland's film festivals offering a fabulous space in which to welcome their audiences, alongside technical and marketing packages French Film Festival UK, Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival, Take One Action!, Edinburgh Short Film Festival and Iberodocs Film Festival amongst many others.
