Inter president 'plots escape route' for Club World Cup player stranded in Iran as trapped star sends updates 'every few hours' amid Israel conflict
Inter Milan 's striker Mehdi Taremi is in 'constant contact' with his club while he is stuck in Iran amid the ongoing conflict with Israel, as his club try to find an exit plan for the star. Taremi, 32, was named in Inter's squad for the Club World Cup in the United States and their first fixture comes on Wednesday against Mexican side Monterrey, but was unable to join up with his side. He had flown back to his homeland to accept Iran's Footballer of the Year award and planned to then jet straight out to Los Angeles to join his club team-mates. The frontman was also in Iran to play for the national team in their World Cup qualifiers against Qatar and North Korea, and scored against the latter. However, the rapid escalation in the conflict between Israel and Iran saw Israeli missiles and jets bombard nuclear and military facilities, with Tehran targeted. Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has reportedly been in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Italian ambassador to Tehran, Paola Amadei, in order to try to find a way to extract Taremi. However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport there is as yet no resolution to the issue of flying Taremi out of Tehran. The only solution, the outlet claims, available to the club and player is to leave Iran by land, most likely car, and then join his team from there. Yet the Italian giants are thought to have advised Taremi against such a measure due to the high level of risk involved, with the ultimate priority being the safety and welfare of the striker and his family. Taremi himself has been in contact with his team-mates in the US on their hunt for the Club World Cup trophy, and is thought to be constantly in touch with team manager Matteo Tagliacarne. He reportedly sent them encouragement a couple of hours before their 1-1 draw with Mexican side Monterrey at the Club World Cup on Wednesday. Taremi's family, also in Iran, are not thought to be with him, and Gazzetta's report claims that he is still in good spirits, and hasn't lost his 'humour' when he talks with his team. Most importantly, he is believed to have reassured the rest of the Inter squad and hierarchy that he does not feel in danger, amid conflict between the two nations. Taremi remained on the bench during Inter's Champions League final defeat by PSG but made 43 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring three goals.

Inter set to appoint former player Chivu as manager to replace Inzaghi
Inter Milan will appoint their former player and youth coach Cristian Chivu as manager to replace the recently departed Simone Inzaghi once details are worked out with his current club Parma, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said on Friday. Inzaghi left Inter on Tuesday, four years to the day since his appointment and three days after his side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League final to end the season trophyless, and was named coach of Al-Hilal a day later. Italian media reports had already named Chivu as the new manager with the 44-year-old Romanian set to sign a two-year contract, and Marotta, speaking at the Serie A Festival, all but confirmed the news. "To win, money alone is not enough, expertise, planning, experience, and many other qualities are needed," Marotta said. "All these qualities are what we believe to have, for example in the case of Chivu. I'm saying this because I cannot give official confirmation as there is a bureaucratic aspect we need to overcome with Parma." While Inzaghi arrived at Inter after being in charge of Lazio for five full seasons, winning a Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups with the Rome-based team, the club are now putting their faith in a coach with very little coaching experience at this level. Chivu spent seven seasons as a defender at Inter, ending his playing career at the club in 2014 and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side of 2010. He returned to Inter in 2018, taking charge of underage teams and moving up through the ranks to manage the youth team where he won the league title in his first season in charge in 2022. Chivu left Inter at the end of the 2023-24 season, and in February this year he took on his first senior managerial role when he was named Parma manager to replace Fabio Pecchia with the club in the Serie A relegation zone. Parma had lost five of their last six games under Pecchia, while Chivu suffered just three defeats in his 13 matches in charge, securing the club's survival with a win at Atalanta on the final day of the season. Chivu has little time to settle in with the Club World Cup fast approaching where Inter begin the tournament on June 17 when they take on Mexicos' Monterrey in Los Angeles followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate.

End of the road: Coach Inzaghi exits Inter, Al-Hilal switch reportedly sealed
ROME, June 4 — Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi is leaving after four years by 'mutual agreement', the club announced on Tuesday, as Italian media reported he was moving to Saudi Arabia. 'The club and Simone Inzaghi are parting ways. This is the decision taken by mutual agreement,' Inter said in a statement. Both Inter and Inzaghi said the decision had been made at a meeting involving the coach and club President Giuseppe Marotta on Tuesday afternoon. The parting came just days after Saturday's 5-0 thumping by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. Talk had already been swirling about his exit, and last month Inzaghi played down rumours about a two-year deal with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal worth €50 million(RM242 million). Italian media said Tuesday this reported had been confirmed. Inzaghi took over Inter in 2021 and had a contract until 2026. The 49-year-old guided the club to one Serie A title — Inter's 20th — and two Italian Cups. He led the team to two Champions League finals in the past three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. In its statement, the club said Inzaghi's management was 'characterised by great passion, accompanied by professionalism and dedication'. His trophies had 'brought the club back to the top of Italian and European football', it said. Marotta thanked him 'for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths'. 'Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day, can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today,' he said. In a separate statement, Inzaghi thanked the players, managers and staff, but most of all the fans, adding: 'I will never forget you.' — AFP
