Barrios double gets Atletico back on track
Pablo Barrios scored twice as Atletico Madrid beat the Seattle Sounders 3-1 at Lumen Field on Thursday. (Pablo PORCIUNCULA) Pablo Barrios scored twice as Atletico Madrid bounced back from their Club World Cup opening defeat to Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on Thursday. Atletico were outclassed by PSG in a 4-0 loss at the Rose Bowl in Group B on Sunday but their quality was on full display in a convincing victory at Lumen Field. Advertisement Seattle were hoping to emulate Inter Miami's upset victory over European opposition earlier in the day but while the Florida side can call on Lionel Messi, the Sounders have more modest talents and were fortunate to escape a heavier loss. The Spanish side looked determined to put the game to bed as soon as possible and with some better finishing they might have done so. Norwegian Alexander Sorloth missed an early opening and then Julian Alvarez showed deft footwork to weave his way into the box but floated his shot wide of the post. But the breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Giuliano Simeone, son of Atletico coach Diego, burst down the right and crossed low to Barrios whose fierce strike crashed in off the underside of the bar. Advertisement Sorloth then wasted a great chance from close range, chesting down and blasting over the bar and he was denied by Stefan Frei when one-on-one with the Sounders keeper. It was one-way traffic but somehow Atletico only had the single goal to their name. They thought they had a penalty when Simeone was ruled to have been brought down in the box by Reed Baker-Whiting and the referee pointed to the spot but after being called to the monitor for a video review, he overturned his decision. At the other end, Baker-Whiting whistled a shot just wide on the stroke of half-time as Seattle began to show some of the spirit that they had shown in their narrow 2-1 loss to Botofogo in their opener. Advertisement Simeone brought on Belgian Axel Witsel at the break and the 36-year-old made an instant impact - Marcos Llorente's shot was tipped onto the underside of the bar and Robin Le Normand clipped the ball across the box for Witsel to nod in and make it 2-0. That looked to be game over but Seattle fought back with a smart shot on the turn in the box from Albert Rusnak. Five minutes later though Barrios added his second when a long throw reached him at the back of the box and he placed his shot with precision into the far corner. Alvarez saw a volley from edge of the box hit the top of the post and the glimmer of hope gave Seattle cause to fight hard in the latter stages. The Sounders will be eliminated from the tournament if PSG avoid defeat against Botofogo later on Thursday. sev/rcw

WATCH: Atletico Madrid strike early against Seattle Sounders as Pablo Barrios scores
Atletico Madrid are aiming to pick up their first points of the 2025 Club World Cup against Seattle Sounders, and they are on course to do so after taking an early lead over the MLS side. Diego Simeone's side were thrashed 4-0 by European champions Paris Saint-Germain in their opening match, so a bounce-back is needed against Seattle. And so far, they are set for victory after scoring in the 11th minute courtesy of midfielder Pablo Barrios. It's a wonderful finish from Barrios, who finds the back of the net via the crossbar after being played in by Giuliano Simeone. It's a goal that had been coming after a strong start from Atleti, who can now settle into proceedings with ease. Atleti must win this one if they are to give themselves a better chance of reaching the Club World Cup knockout stages, and so far, they are on course for the three points.

Argentina thrash Brazil to seal World Cup qualification
Argentina produced a stunning performance to hammer their arch-rivals Brazil 4-1 in the World Cup Qualifiers. With both teams coming off a win, expectations were sky-high for this riveting contest; however, the reigning World champions made it a one-sided affair. Argentina drew first blood four minutes into the game after Julian Alvarez nodded home past a sloppy Brazilian defence. Enzo Fernandez blasted home inside the six-yard box to double the lead after Nahuel Molina's pass took a deflection off Brazilian defender Murilo. La Selecao cut the deficit just before the half-hour mark, with Matheus Cunha capitalising on Cristian Romero's defensive error. But La Albiceleste piled further misery on the visitors after Alexis Mac Allister restored the two-goal cushion following an impressive volley off Fernandez's pass. Giuliano Simeone put the game to bed in the 71st minute after firing home an incredible strike for his first senior international goal. Giuliano Simeone was pumped that his first goal for Argentina came against Brazil 😤 — B/R Football (@brfootball) March 26, 2025 Moving eight points clear at the top of the South American Qualifiers table, Argentina have also booked their place in the World Cup next year. On the other hand, Brazil endured a disastrous performance, further underlining their inconsistent form. Despite the presence of world-class attackers like Raphinha, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, La Selecao managed just only one shot on target. Other key players including, Joelinton, Marquinhos and Murilo were also underwhelming. The defeat leaves Brazil fourth in the table with 21 points. The top six teams will qualify for the World Cup. Head Coach Dorival Junior will also be on the firing line after the calamitous result. He has managed seven wins, seven defeats and one draw since taking over at the Brazilian national team. He also oversaw Brazil getting knocked out at the quarter-finals in last year's Copa America.
