England u21s clash with Germany SUSPENDED as stadium plunged into semi-darkness and players taken off pitch

ENGLAND UNDER-21s' clash with Germany came to a halt after a floodlight failure. With just seconds left of the first half remaining, the Nitra Stadium in Slovakia was plunged into semi darkness. 3 3 3 That forced Dutch referee Sander van der Eijk to stop the action. Eventually, with only a minute of additional time to go, the official called in captains Harvey Elliott and his German counterpart Merlin Rohl. Lights on one side of the ground were still working, but none on the other were either. Both sets of players were left walking around with half the ground in darkness. Following further discussions, the decision was made to blow 30 seconds early for the break while technicians quickly got to work trying to fix the problem. That summed up a dire first half for Lee Carsley's side as they went in two goals behind. Lukas Ullrich floated a beautiful ball over the head of flat-footed Jarell Quansah that was met by an excellent touch from Ansgar Knauff before the winger drilled past James Beadle after just two minutes. And the scorer turned provider moments before the lights went out as his cross was headed home by Nelson Weiper. England defeated Czechia 3-1 in their first group game, courtesy of goals by Elliott, Jonathan Rowe and Charlie Cresswell. Carsley's men followed that up with a 0-0 bore draw vs Slovenia last time out.

England's Under-21s have gotten off to a decent start in their European Under-21s Championship campaign. Lee Carsley 's s ide have won one and drawn one from their first two fixtures and sit second in Group B. They now face Germany in their final group game knowing that a victory would propel them to the top of the group and send them safely through to the next round. In theory, the team should already have enough points to get through and only a large victory for Slovenia over Czechia would send them out of the tournament should Germany prove victorious on Wednesday evening. The Germans have impressed with two wins from two. A 3-0 triumph over Slovenia followed up with a 4-2 beating of Czechia sent them to the top of the group. With their quarter-final place secured, manager Antoino di Salvo could decide to rest players ahead of the crucial knockout rounds. Here's everything you need to know about the match: When is England U21s vs Germany U21s? England U21s take on Germany U21s in a crucial Group B clash at the Stadion pod Zoborom in Slovakia on Wednesday 18 June. How can I watch it? The match will kick off at 8pm BST and will be broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK with coverage beginning at 7.30pm. England U21s vs Germany U21s team news Lee Carsley has a full squad to select from but may decide to switch things up in pursuit of more aggression in the final third. The boss admitted to being 'frustrated' by England's start against Slovakia and will want to begin the match strongly against Germany. He is one for consistency though so the starting XI may not change too much. Predicted line-ups England U21s XI: Beadle; Quansah, Creswell, Hackney, Livramento; Gray, Anderson, Elliott; McAtee, Rowe, Hutchinson Germany U21s XI: Atubolu; Collins, Rosenfelder, Arrey-Mbi, Brown; Nebel, Martel, Reitz; Gruda, Tresoldi, Woltenmade Odds England U21s to win - 6/4 Draw - 12/5 Germany U21s to win - 17/10 Odds via Bet365 Prediction Germany are on an unbeaten run in their last 17 matches across all competitions and have already scored seven goals in two games at these Euros. That is the most of any side and with England struggling in the final third they are the favourites to go on and win the game. Should Lee Carsley's men manage to score first though things could get interesting but the Germans should have enough quality to take the win.

Lee Carsley opens up on support from Thomas Tuchel as England Under-21's face crunch clash with Germany to keep Euros title defence alive

Lee Carsley has revealed he has received plenty of support from Thomas Tuchel ahead of England Under-21's crunch clash against Germany. Carsley's side need a point to progress to the quarter-finals and while senior boss Tuchel hasn't offered up any tips or tricks to down his birth nation, Carsley praised the German's support from back home. 'No insider tips but like I said he's very supportive of the players and the squad and I know that he's watching the players and the games,' Carsley said. 'Hopefully we can give him something to ponder in terms of the way that some of the players' reputations are hopefully gaining momentum. 'He's watching the games, as are the rest of the staff, and I feel very well supported by him.' Victory in Nitra on Wednesday night would see England top Group B but to do that they need to overcome a Germany side boasting the tournament's top scorer in Nick Woltemade, who has four goals through the opening two games. 'The centre forward is getting a lot of attention at the moment,' Carsley said. 'He's scoring and he's a player that we're looking forward to playing against.' What is of greater importance to Carsley is for his players to be brave and show their best selves. 'We talk about them having personality on the ball,' he added. 'It's really important in the biggest moments and in the biggest games that's what we are trying to prepare these players for. To hopefully go on and have senior careers they have to be able to handle these kind of experiences and situations, so I feel like we are capable of that.' Leadership has been one of the biggest talking points for Carsley and observing this group in close quarters from their training base in Samorin, just outside of Bratislava, it is noticeable how quiet it is. Charlie Cresswell, who was part of the 2023 Under-21 side that won the Euros in Georgia, is particularly vocal on the pitch, as is goalkeeper James Beadle and midfielder Elliot Anderson. 'I feel I've always been vocal,' Anderson said. 'I can be quiet off the pitch, but once I'm on it, I change. It's a good thing.' For Carsley, he cannot breed a leader but instead the challenge for him and his staff is to try and coax out those qualities if they are in the background. 'We have to give these players chance to become experienced and become vocal,' he explained. 'We try and encourage them to drive it as much as we can. I think we try and give them a platform, give them chance to grow. 'If we are always on top of them, disrupting them and giving them information, it dilutes what they're doing. We need more leaders, we 100 per cent do, I think every team does. 'I'm thinking back to when I was playing and you always seemed to have what we haven't got. We haven't got an older pro in the team that sort of, his legs have gone but he can talk you through the game. 'They are all the same age and all at that level but where we are lucky is they all play at clubs where they have got senior players that are showing them good examples and good leadership and hopefully they can take that and bring it here. 'I don't think you can [breed a leader], no. I think you can guide.' England go into Wednesday night's crucial final Group B against Germany sat second on four points, knowing they simply need to match or better Slovenia's result against Czech Republic to progress, where one of Spain or Italy awaits.

England U21 vs Germany U21 preview: Free betting tips, odds and predictions for Under-21 Euros 2025

LEE CARSLEY and his England U21s are hoping to book their place in the European Championship quarter-finals against Germany. SunSport betting experts have previewed the contest and selected the best bets, tips and exclusive sign-up bonuses from our leading betting partners. England U21 vs Germany U21 preview Defending champions England face a decisive showdown with Germany on Wednesday as they bid to book their place in the knockout stages of the European Under-21 Championship. The Young Lions head into their final Group B fixture knowing that only a win will guarantee top spot - though a draw would still be enough to see them through to the quarter-finals, regardless of the outcome in the group's other clash between Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Last time out, Lee Carsley's side were left frustrated by a goalless draw with Slovenia, despite dominating much of the contest. England enjoyed 64.7% possession, registered 41 touches in the opposition penalty area, and fired 20 shots - yet managed just three on target. That stalemate leaves England second in the group, trailing leaders Germany by two points. A loss could prove disastrous if Slovenia beat the Czechs and overturn a goal difference deficit, potentially sending the holders crashing out. Germany, meanwhile, have already sealed their spot in the quarter-finals following back-to-back wins, showcasing the firepower that made them pre-tournament favourites. Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade has been particularly prolific, bagging four goals so far. The Germans are unbeaten in 17 matches across all competitions (W14, D3). However, they'll be wary of the fact their last defeat came at the hands of England in 2023. England U21 vs Germany U21 preview betting tips and predictions Goalscorer Nick Woltemade was my pick for Golden Boot winner at 7/1, and he's made an electric start to the competition. The 23-year-old forward enjoyed a phenomenal season with Bundesliga side Stuttgart, scoring 17 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions. He's continued that form on the international stage, netting four goals in just two games at these Euros - including a stunning hat-trick in Germany's opening match. His performances have already caught the eye of several European heavyweights, with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Everton reportedly monitoring him closely. With a high-stakes clash against England on Wednesday, expect Woltemade to deliver. Win As you can probably tell, we're backing Germany to come out on top on Wednesday. The Germans are unbeaten in their last 17 matches across all competitions and have already racked up seven goals in just two games at these Euros - more than any other side. They now face an England team that's been tidy in possession but has lacked a clinical edge in the final third. Unless that changes quickly, Germany - who've scored a staggering 36 goals in their last 10 matches - look well placed to punish them.
