Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley wary of threat posed by Cork City's livewire attackers
It's first versus last at Tallaght Stadium on Friday evening as Shamrock Rovers look to strengthen their hold on top spot in the Premier Division when Cork City visit Dublin 24. Unbeaten in 10 games, with seven victories in their last eight, Rovers are in cruise mode and enjoying their best form of the campaign. Stephen Bradley's side sit nine points clear at the summit, albeit with two games more played than second-placed Bohemians , who they meet at Dalymount Park on Monday in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash. Conversely, these are worrying times for Cork City, who are bottom of the league, two points adrift of Sligo Rovers and an alarming 10 points behind third-from-bottom Waterford. They travel to the capital on the back of last Friday's 2-0 home defeat to Bohemians. Manager Gerard Nash is still searching for his first win since taking charge four games ago. With no victory in eight and just two from 19 all season, Cork are in a battle to avoid relegation for a third time in six seasons. READ MORE 'The task is huge. We are in a fight, we know that,' said Nash after last week's defeat. 'We have 17 games [remaining] and we have to be better. The players care and we need to show fight and spirit now, starting in Tallaght.' The Leesiders held Rovers to a 1-1 draw at Turner's Cross early last month. Bradley is fully respectful of the challenge they bring despite the 29-point gap between the sides. Cork City's Sean Maguire was singled out by Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley. Photograph: Tom Maher/Inpho 'When you have (Seán) Maguire, Djenairo Daniels and Cathal O'Sullivan, their attacking threat with those three is as good as any in the country,' said the Rovers manager, whose only injury absentee is defender Adam Matthews. 'Seán Maguire's movement is very similar to (Waterford's) Padraig Amond, very good and very clever. O'Sullivan is a very good young player and Daniels causes real problems, so they must be respected and Cork as a team must be also.' [ Shelbourne end St Pats' unbeaten home record thanks to Ali Coote goal Opens in new window ] Having gone second in the table last week, Bohs manager Alan Reynolds brings his team to his native Waterford as they strive to make it three wins on the bounce to maintain their momentum ahead of hosting arch-rivals Rovers on Monday. 'Waterford are a good side,' said Reynolds, whose team has won nine of their last 12 games since languishing second bottom of the table at the end of March. Bohemians celebrate after Rhys Brennan's goal against Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium on April 21st, which helped turn their season around. Photograph: James Crombie/Inpho 'They had a great record against us last season and they've beaten us already at Dalymount this season, so it's another game where I think we're going into it with something to prove.' Shelbourne welcome Derry City to Tolka Park with manager Damien Duff warning his players not to be distracted by next month's Champions League clash with Linfield . 'Your league form is what gets you to Europe. Don't take your eye off that,' said Duff. 'The lads need to realise they have to be on form individually to be in contention to start or play in Europe. That's very different to just being motivated by the occasion. 'It has to be collective and it has to carry. Build the form, attack the league, take that to Europe.' ‘My wife doesn't get much attention ‘ - Cork City boss on the demands of his job
Re-watching games at the crack of dawn with Mick McCarthy, when most people still have hours to go in their Sunday morning lie-in, has helped toughen Gerard Nash up for his new role as Cork City manager. He has pledged to put in the hours - on the training pitch and in the office - to help steer the Leesiders to Premier Division safety. It's his first time to be a senior head coach, after spells at Ipswich, Aston Villa and with Swedish side GAIS, but he believes he has the skills, the drive and the work ethic to succeed. 'It's been a whirlwind, obviously,' he said of his appointment in mid-May. 'Coming into a job mid-season in the situation that I did, it's probably not always the norm. That's for sure. 'Would you want to come in and have your pre-season to plan everything, and do it exactly how you'd wish it? Of course. 'It's been a whirlwind, but first of all I've enjoyed it, I've got some good staff here with me, there was a good bond between the fans and the players in my first game at Turner's Cross, and I just want to build on the momentum that I felt that night. 'The job is full-on, but that's what I expected. It's all I've ever known in any time I've spent in English football and anytime I've spent in Sweden. 'So it's been everything I expected. I don't think there's been any challenge I couldn't deal with. 'I'm just focused on the game on Friday night, it's as simple as that, and I just can't wait for it.' So where does he find the time to put his stamp on the team? 'My time in England, in the Championship, it was far more relentless in the amount of games and the way we worked in that respect, so I am sort of used to that,' replied Nash. 'When it's Friday to Friday, I think there is enough time every week to get across things. 'We are full-time coaches. I've got David Meyler by my side and we are working every minute of every day. We are all in on this, this is our livelihood. 'People are leaving jobs to come and work for me, so we are dedicating a lot of time to it. 'I don't think you can be successful in football if you work a 40-hour week. I don't think anybody in football who is successful does that. 'You have to be really dedicated and devote a lot of time to it, so that's what I do. 'The situation we are in is a huge challenge and we need to fight to get out of the situation that we are in, and that's what we are doing. 'My wife doesn't get much of my attention and probably the rest of my family suffers. But we probably do this because it's something that's in us, it's something we love.' He loves it so much that he's up at all hours, dissecting and analysing past performances, and preparing for what's next. 'I guess I was schooled with Mick McCarthy (at Ipswich), we'd have a game on a Saturday and we'd be in at half-six on Sunday morning watching it back,' said Nash. 'It's what I know. You are working a lot, but that's what it takes to be successful.'

New Cork City manager Gerard Nash reacts to St Pat's meltdown with stark warning
New Cork City manager Gerard Nash believes the Rebels have the spirit and belief to get out of trouble - if they sort their defensive woes. The 38-year-old watched from the stands as City imploded at the death to lose 3-2 away to St Pat's at Richmond Park. Charlie Lyons and Seanie Maguire scored to cancel out Mason Melia's opener and the Leesiders were on track for a precious win. But Zack Elbouzedi equalised - with the aid of a deflection - in the 89th minute before Jamie Lennon snatched victory with a 95th minute winner. It was a rude awakening for new manager Nash who went straight to Richmond Park after stepping off the plane from Sweden. The former Ipswich Town player was first-team coach at Swedish top flight side GAIS, having moved from Aston Villa's U18s and Ipswich Town's U23s and U18s before that. If you're curious, you can read our Privacy Notice. Last night, Nash said: 'My previous employer in Gothenburg, we only played on Wednesday night, had a good game and we won and then I left the club on Thursday. I was in four countries in a day, from Sweden to Denmark to England and eventually got here, and I will end up in Cork tonight so it's been a busy day. 'I have always tried to make myself better, and do things to improve. The biggest thing now is timing. We all have things in our personal lives but I was lucky enough to be offered the job this week, and it was too good an opportunity to turn down.' The Leixlip man continued: 'There's a feeling within the group that we can get more out of the team, and a big factor was to be back in Ireland. I'm an Irishman, I left here at a very young age and I'm looking forward to basing myself in Cork and being back home.' Nash did not speak to the players before the Inchicore clash, but he left the director's box to go into the dressing room at half-time. It was an unusual first meeting with his new squad but Nash said: 'Life is unpredictable, you have to throw yourself into it and make an impact. I felt there were a couple of things I needed to address and there was a really good response. It was a strange introduction but we've plenty of time to get to know each other.' Conceding goals has been Cork City's problem all year and the Rebels have thrown away over 20 points from positions of strength in games. Their frustration on Friday was compounded when news filtered through that bottom side Sligo Rovers won away to Galway United - and are now level on 12 points with City. Assessing Friday's performance at St Pat's, Nash said: 'That's football. I've been in this situation before and it's never over until the final whistle. You're never sure, so it's a disappointing result undoubtedly. It was my first 90 minutes at the club. 'Did I see aspects of the performance that really pleased me, yes. That gives me hope and confidence and should give the players the same. But if you concede the amount of goals we have you will always be in trouble. We will work on it, but as important as that is the spirit of the team. For all the disappointment of the goals we conceded, we showed in the second-half our spirit and belief.' And Nash added: 'There will be 10 managers in the league tonight thinking, how can we build and go on a run? It's a competitive league and you could see the fine margins in that game - fine margins decide games and we need to be better at that. It's my first day, so I'm looking forward to working with the players. It's a good group of players and I can't wait to get started.'

Cork City appoint Gerard Nash as new manager
CORK CITY HAVE confirmed the appointment of Gerard Nash as their new manager. The 38-year-old arrives less than a week after Tim Clancy handed in his resignation following a 2-1 defeat to Derry City last Friday that left the Turner's Cross club in the promotion/relegation playoff place. Nash is Cork's fifth permanent boss since 2019, following the tenures of John Caulfield, Neale Fenn, Colin Healy and Clancy. Advertisement 'I am absolutely thrilled to be appointed as the new Men's First Team Manager at Cork City FC. Everyone in Ireland knows the history that the club has, its fantastic support base, and the potential within the existing players. I have watched a lot of the league this season from afar, and I have no doubt that there is so much more we can deliver,' Nash, who has left his position as assistant manager at Swedish club GAIS, said. A former underage coach with Ipswich Town, Nash then worked as a FAI development officer and high performance coach, before leaving to take charge of Aston Villa's Under-18s and then onto Sweden. Cork City owner Dermot Usher said: 'I am very pleased to welcome Ger to the club. He has a long and very impressive track record as a coach, and he really impressed us with his thoughts on taking on the role. 'From speaking to him, I know how motivated he is to take on the job, and I know he will give it everything he has. Everyone at the club wants to see us improve and begin to climb the table, and I share Ger's belief that we have the talent in our dressing room to improve.' Nash won't be in the dugout for Cork's game away to St Patrick's Athletic tomorrow, with academy boss Liam Kearney joined by Greg Yelverton until Nash takes charge for the Galway United clash next Friday.
