Royal Ascot Lucky 15 tips: Day 3
Ron Wood has picked out a Lucky 15 for Royal Ascot day three, as well as an 18/1 best each-way bet. If you already have a Sky Bet account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. Royal Ascot Day 3 Lucky 15 tips The first horse in this Lucky 15 bet is CHARLES DARWIN in the Norfolk Stakes (2.30), a Group 2 race for two-year-olds over the minimum trip. This horse has won on his last two starts and sets a good, clear standard for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore. I'm sticking with the same trainer and jockey for the next two legs. Next up is SERIOUS CONTENDER in the King George V Stakes (3.05). He has been saved for this race – to protect his handicap mark – since winning at Leopardstown in March and he can improve as he steps up to 1m 4f. ILLINOIS has to prove he has the stamina to stay 2m 4f in the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup (4.20), but he had no problem getting 1m 7f on testing ground last autumn when winning a Group 2 race in France as a three-year-old and his winning reappearance in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester is good form. O'Brien has trained five different Ascot Gold Cup winners. There are plenty of other O'Brien runners with good chances if you want to make this an all-Ballydoyle Lucky 15, but the final leg for me is NO RETREAT in the closing Buckingham Palace Stakes (6.10). A stiff 7f handicap on quick ground is ideal for this George Scott-trained runner. Charles Darwin (2.30, Ascot) @ 5/4 with Sky Bet (1/5 for first 4 places) Serious Contender (3.05, Ascot) @ 11/4 with Sky Bet (1/5 for first 6 places) Illinois (4.20, Ascot) @ 13/8 with Sky Bet (1/5 for first 3 places) No Retreat (6.10, Ascot) @ 18/1 with Sky Bet (1/5 for first 7 places) A £0.10p each-way Lucky 15 – for a total stake of £3 – on these four horses offers a potential return of £119.19. Royal Ascot Day 3 each-way tips Let's take a closer look at NO RETREAT (6.10) for the main each-way play of day three. I followed him closely in Dubai during the winter, when he didn't quite get a mile yet found Meydan's turning and flat 7f a bit sharp. But he still showed useful form, winning a handicap over the latter trip. Having been off for 78 days, he returned to Britain over a mile at Haydock and again didn't quite see it out, finishing third. The selection should now be spot-on for this assignment and he gets a straight, stiff 7f on quick ground, which looks just about perfect for him. A refitted tongue-tie may also help, likewise first-time cheekpieces, and it will be disappointing if he can't run into the first 7 places, for which Sky Bet is paying out. 'Racing's Ryder Cup' - Scott revels in Ascot aura
"It's such a special meeting, it's like no other week in racing - you could sort of equate it to FA Cup finals, Ryder Cups and things like that."Newmarket trainer George Scott and jockey Callum Shepherd proved a winning combination when Isle Of Jura won the Hardwicke Stakes at last year's Royal Ascot and they can't wait to get back there for this week's expects to saddle nine or 10 runners from his Eve Lodge Stables yard over the course of the four days and is upbeat about the chances of more success."I'm just excited to take a bunch of horses there in this form - this is the first time we've taken a proper team," he told BBC Look East."Of course, that moment with Isle Of Jura is very special but we move on. We'll be looking to try and do it again in some capacity. As long as the horses turn up healthy, then we should be OK." Scott became a trainer 10 years ago and 2024 was his most successful to date with 48 winners at home and abroad, including Isle Of Jura's was an especially sweet moment for Shepherd, whose friend and fellow jockey Stefano Cherchi died after a fall in Australia a couple of months earlier - and who had been replaced as rider of Ambiente Friendly, which finished second, for the 2024 Derby at Epsom."It's the best moment I've ever had on a horse, the best moment I've ever had in sport," said the 27-year-old Shepherd."The buzz was unlike anything I've ever experienced and he set the narrative, set the tone for the second half of the season last year where we were just incredibly successful. That followed into the winter with success in Dubai, Bahrain, the German St Leger, to name just a few. "That day just felt like the start of something big. I can't explain how much we all enjoyed it together. It was magic." 'We understand each other' Former public schoolboy Shepherd has a rival for sporting glory within his own family - his golfing brother Laird won the British Amateur Championship in it is his relationship with Scott which is helping progress his career and it is one that he believes has "grown and got stronger" since they first began working together "four or five years ago"."We really do have an excellent working relationship. We've had success all over the world now and we understand each other very well," he said."He knows how I like to ride and obviously likes that. It suits our horses, suits our approach to racing. Now we don't really need to say a lot to each other before races. He knows I've done my homework and I've got to know the horses as much as I can - it works pretty well." Scott believes there is a "basis of trust" underpinning their working he added: "We knit together nicely. We're lucky to have Callum. It's really been the perfect pair. He's on this upward trajectory for the first time, as am I, and I'm really enjoying the fact that we're doing it together."Callum's hard on himself, he's his own strongest critic and if things haven't gone to plan, if I've prepared the horse wrong or run it in the wrong race, he's not snapping back at me - and similarly, I wouldn't be too critical of him. It's a give-take type of thing." Scott's leading contenders Among Scott's horses for Ascot, he has high hopes for Staya in Wednesday's Queen Mary Stakes, a five-furlong race for two-year-old fillies."She's only run once and won very impressively at Yarmouth. She's by Havana Grey who's doing fantastically [at stud], especially with his two-year-olds. She's one of the favourites [for the Queen Mary], near the head of the market off one run, so we're hoping for a big run from her."He is also keen to see how Gaga Mate will fare in the Windsor Castle Stakes on the same day, having only recently joined the yard."He seems very uncomplicated. You can see with him, he's moving well. Everything's sort of straightforward with him," said Scott."The more horses go into the big meetings, the more pressure. But 10 runners spread over five days is very manageable. It's really amazing when you think about someone like Willie Mullins, who takes 50 or 60 horses to the Cheltenham Festival."Royal Ascot begins on Tuesday, when Scott hopes to have runners in the King Charles III Stakes, Wolferton Stakes and Copper House Handicap."I go into it with a lot of excitement. There's a lot of live chances," said Shepherd."I've got some good rides for other people as well, other than George, and I think the confidence you take from having been there and done it before puts you in a good position to go and do it again."And once you've done it once, you want to do it again, believe me."

Track Record-Setting West Acre Has Breeders' Cup Aspirations Via Royal Ascot
Track Record-Setting West Acre Has Breeders' Cup Aspirations Via Royal Ascot originally appeared on Paulick Report. Michael Blencowe's West Acre (IRE) will aim to cement his place among Europe's top sprinters when he lines up for the King Charles III Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot on June 17 – a key fixture in the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series. The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 93 stakes races in 15 countries whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships, scheduled to be held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, California. Trained by George Scott, 3-year-old West Acre has made rapid progress since his belated debut late last year. Despite missing most of his juvenile season with a setback, the son of Mehmas (IRE) has burst onto the scene with two Group victories in Dubai – most notably breaking the track record at Meydan in the Blue Point Sprint (G2) before following up in the Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint (G3) in March. Advertisement 'His racing career started late, because of an issue that he picked up as a young horse,' Scott said. 'As he went through the grades you could see him growing in confidence. He won the Blue Point really impressively; he'd probably had a harder race than we anticipated that day. He's come back now and he's fresh and well and looks like he's at the peak of his powers again.' Now freshened up and thriving at home in Newmarket, West Acre returns to British soil for the first time in 2025 and takes on a strong field in the King Charles III Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot, where Scott had a winner last year with Victorious Racing's Isle of Jura (GB). 'We had a winner last year. We won the Hardwicke with Isle of Jura, we felt it was a big moment,' Scott said. 'You're instantly recognizable as a stable when you have success there. It's part of the growth as a young stable that you really need. We've got a team of horses going there this year. If we have a clear week with them in the build-up, we hope something might happen.' Scott is hopeful conditions will suit West Acre at Royal Ascot. 'Fast ground, strong pace, the track should really suit him,' he said. 'The weather looks like it is going to be dry next week, so we'd like a nice fast track to get him started back here on.' The race serves as a 'Win and You're In' qualifier for the Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1), granting the winner an automatic fees-paid berth into the $1 million contest at Del Mar in November. Scott is no stranger to the meeting, having saddled the W J and T C O Gredley-owned James Garfield (IRE) in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Del Mar in 2017. 'James Garfield was my first good horse and Frankie (Dettori) rode him in the Breeders' Cup,' Scott said. 'It didn't really get much better than that at the time. It certainly gave me the appetite to want to come back. So West Acre's season we'll see how it all pans out, but the plan is to end up at Del Mar with him.' Scott is a big supporter of the Breeders' Cup, enjoying his time in America and American racing. 'You've got that real international theme at the Breeders' Cup,' he said. 'I really enjoy the way the Breeders' Cup do things. They try to bring the best horses in the world together and in true American style it's bigger and better than anything else.' Scott opts for Sandown with Bay City Roller
George Scott has skipped the Prix du Jockey Club with Bay City Roller who will instead make his seasonal reappearance in the Star Sports Heron Stakes – ground permitting. The unbeaten Champagne Stakes winner was being initially aimed at the Irish 2,000 Guineas before he had his attentions switched to the French Derby. However, with warm weather in France and rain forecast in the UK, Scott feels he has better chance of getting more suitable conditions at Sandown on Thursday evening. 'We've been battling with the weather. Every time we make a plan for him it seems to dry up,' he said. 'We're very keen to run him on good ground at the fastest. So although they water very well in France, it looks a very warm build up to that race and we just thought it was sensible with the rain around to redirect to Sandown. 'We've got the impression that 10 furlongs isn't going to be a problem but where we are at, with the lack of opportunities at this stage of the season, we've had to go where the race is so he'll start off at a mile.' He added: 'I'm very happy with the horse, he's training as well as you could hope and he's in really good shape. He's a horse who has won at the track so we won't be looking for any excuses, put it that way.'

The two best mates who trained horses named after each other set to clash in fight for Group 1 glory
BEST pals George Scott and Charlie Fellowes could go head to head for Group 1 French Derby glory on June 1. The two handlers have long been buddies, and used to face-off in the George and Charlie: Off the Bridle podcast, although their last episode was in December of 2024. Come on, lads, time for another! Scott once trained a horse called Charlie Fellowes (wasn't too bad) and Fellowes the gelding George Scott (never won!). Now, Scott is primed to unleash the unbeaten Bay City Roller in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, while Fellowes has the option of France or Epsom for Luther, with the latter becoming increasingly more likely. Bay City Roller, whose sire New Bay landed the 2015 Jockey Club, is unbeaten in three starts for Scott, winding up last season with success in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. The handler told me: "It's likely Bay City Roller will go to the Jockey Club with the ground unlikely to get any softer for the Irish 2000 Guineas. "His work has been suggesting recently that he is now working towards his pedigree - his dam won over a mile and a half. "I'm really pleased with him and he's definitely a horse who needs some cut in the ground. "I'm looking forward to getting him started. It's not ideal he's been off this long if you are going into a Classic you probably could do with a run. "But he's been to Chelmsford a couple of times and Sheikh Nasser (owner and yard sponsor under the banner Victorious Racing) is keen we try the French Derby route." Fellowes trained Luther to finish an admirable fourth in the French 2000 Guineas on the same day his Shes Perfect landed the French 1000, only to be disqualified in the stewards' room. Connections are appealing that decision. "Both horses have two options and they both couldn't have taken their races in France any better," reports Fellowes. "Shes Perfect lost a baffling four kilos for her journey over in a very tough race, which just shows her remarkable constitution. "Luther lost ten kilos which again is pretty good. They are both in full work and both cantering away. "Luther has the option of the French and English Derby. Straight after the race I was very much leaning towards the French Derby, but the longer I talk about it with the owners the more we sway towards the English Derby. "On pedigree being by Frankel out of a Musidora winner he should stay and he looked like he would stay in France. And, there is only one Derby. "As for Shes Perfect the decision is between the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) or the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. "She's by Sioux Nation but out of a Galileo mare and every time something comes to her in her races she picks up again. "If she was able to get out in front in a nice rhythm in France I think that could be the spot for her. "The Coronation will be an extremely hot race with Lake Victoria, Zarigana and Flight likely to go, so we are probably leaning towards France and we might have unfinished business there!" Good luck, lads. . Remember to gamble responsibly A responsible gambler is someone who:
