(AP Photo/Tony Ding) SAN DIEGO (AP) — Salvador Perez singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning for the Kansas City Royals, who got home runs from Jonathan India and Bobby Witt Jr. to beat the San Diego Padres 6-5 on Friday night for their fourth straight win. The Royals started this trip with a three-game sweep at Texas. The Padres have lost eight of 11. Advertisement San Diego's Manny Machado hit his 12th homer leading off the ninth off Carlos Estévez, who then retired the side for his big league-leading 22nd save. Padres manager Mike Shildt served his one-game suspension handed down by MLB after a brouhaha in Los Angeles on Thursday night after Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit on the right wrist by a pitch in San Diego's 5-3 win, which prevented a four-game sweep. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also was suspended for one game. Padres closer Robert Suarez was suspended for three games for hitting Shohei Ohtani with a pitch in the ninth inning. He is appealing. Tatis started Friday night after imaging showed no damage. Padres reliever Jason Adam (5-3) opened the eighth by allowing a single and a walk before the 35-year-old Perez singled to left to bring in Maikel Garcia with the go-ahead run. Drew Waters added an RBI single with two outs. Advertisement Witt homered to left with one out in the first, his 11th, off Nick Pivetta. Pivetta opened the fifth with consecutive walks to Freddy Fermin and Nick Loftin and then allowed India's shot to left with one out for a 4-0 lead. It was his fourth. The Padres chased starter Matt Lorenzen in the sixth as they closed to 4-2. Gavin Sheets tied it with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh off Lucas Erceg (2-2). Key moment Jake Cronenworth worked a full count against Estévez before popping up to end it. Key stat Xander Bogaerts, who has struggled this year, tied the Padres' franchise record by hitting safely in eight straight at-bats before popping up in the ninth. Up next Royals LHP Noah Cameron (2-2, 1.91 ERA) and Padres RHP Dylan Cease (2-6, 4.69) are scheduled to start Saturday night. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Aaron Gash) MILWAUKEE (AP) — The San Diego Padres are about to face the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time since their memorable NL Division Series matchup. They believe all the close games they've played lately prepared them for this test. Advertisement San Diego's last seven games have been decided by a total of eight runs, a stretch that continued Sunday when Manny Machado's seventh-inning homer gave the Padres a 1-0 win and series victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. 'We know who we're going to run up against, and we definitely got ready for it this week,' Machado said. This run of close games actually started earlier than that. Thirteen of San Diego's last 14 games featured a margin of no more than two runs, and the Padres have gone 9-5 during that stretch. 'These are kind of the games we've been playing the last 2½ weeks here now,' infielder Jake Cronenworth said. 'They're just kind of become the norm for us. I think (if) you can win these one-run games and win them late – good pitching, good defense and timely hitting – that's kind of the recipe for success.' Advertisement Now they finally get to measure themselves against the Dodgers in seven of their next 10 games. The Padres and Dodgers begin a three-game series Monday at San Diego before meeting again in Los Angeles for a four-game set starting June 16. The Padres are a game behind the Dodgers in the NL West standings after both teams won Sunday. 'It's crazy that we haven't faced them,' reliever Jason Adam said.. 'I'm excited for the series. I'd take this team over any team in baseball, top to bottom. I'd go to battle with them against anybody, so I'm excited for the series. Yeah, that's our focus. We took care of business here. Now, fly home and take care of business there.' How unusual is it for these NL West foes to wait this long before facing off? Aside from the pandemic-delayed season of 2020, the last time the Dodgers and Padres didn't meet until this late in a season was 2000. Advertisement 'I used to think about the schedule and look at it and then think, 'Wow, that's odd,' ' manager Mike Shildt said. 'And then I started taking a holistic picture of the schedule. The schedule's got to be a nightmare to put together. There's just going to be quirks in it.' This has become one of baseball's top rivalries, thanks in part to their recent postseason showdowns. San Diego defeated the top-seeded Dodgers 3-1 in the 2022 NL Division Series before losing 4-1 to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Championship Series. Last year, the Padres had the Dodgers on the brink of elimination before falling 3-2 in the NL Division Series. The Padres led that series 2-1 and had a chance to close it out at home, but they fell 8-0 as eight Dodgers pitchers combined on a shutout. The Dodgers then returned home to win 2-0 in Game 5 as Yoshinobu Yamamoto outdueled Yu Darvish. Advertisement Darvish hasn't pitched for San Diego yet this season as the 38-year-old right-hander recovers from inflammation in his throwing elbow, but the Padres still have an outstanding pitching staff. San Diego has allowed a total of 15 runs over its last seven games and has three shutouts in that span. Sunday marked the Padres' MLB-leading 12th shutout of the season. The Padres have needed that stellar pitching because their lineup has struggled at times. Machado has gone 12 of 31 this month and has three homers in his last four games, but two-time All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr. is hitting .185 since the start of May. That combination of impressive pitching and inconsistent hitting is producing plenty of close games, and the Padres are winning most of them. They're hoping that provides a long-term payoff. 'I think it's not only a help for (preparing for) the Dodgers,' Adam said. 'It's a help for all the future. It's a help for the playoffs. Very rarely are you blowing out a team in the playoffs. Of course, we love blowouts when they happen, and we love winning by 20, but the reality is there's a lot of important games played that are really close. A team that can battle together and win those games is special. That's what we have here.' ___ AP MLB:

Heliot Ramos, Giants rally from 5-run deficit to defeat Padres
Heliot Ramos hit a tying two-run double in the seventh then Jung Hoo Lee followed with a sacrifice fly that put San Francisco ahead, and the Giants rallied to beat the San Diego Padres 6-5 on Wednesday night. San Francisco ended a stretch of 16 straight games scoring four or fewer runs. Gavin Sheets hit a two-run triple in the first then singled in two more runs in the fifth for San Diego, which had a pair of 10-inning wins to start the four-game series. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled to start the ninth against Ryan Walker then right fielder Daniel Johnson ran down Luis Arráez's fly to save an extra-base hit. Manny Machado followed with a single and Randy Rodríguez relieved and recorded the final two outs for his first career save. Matt Chapman hit a two-run homer in the sixth off right-hander Nick Pivetta, who struck out five over six innings and was tagged for five runs on six hits. Heliot Ramos #17 of the San Francisco Giants celebrates after hitting a double at Oracle Park on June 4, 2025 in San Francisco. Suzanna Mitchell/SanPivetta gave way to Jason Adam (5-2) after walking Willy Adames to start the seventh then allowing Daniel Johnson's single. After Patrick Bailey struck out, Tyler Fitzgerald singled to load the bases for Ramos. Sean Hjelle (1-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief for the win in his season debut after being recalled from the minors Tuesday. Sheets' second hit chased Giants lefty Kyle Harrison, who was then checked by an athletic trainer in the dugout after being hit in the pitching elbow with a comebacker. X-rays were negative and Harrison was relieved there's "no damage." He is expected to make at least one more start before Justin Verlander returns from the injured list and rejoins the rotation. The Giants' 16 consecutive games with four or fewer runs ranked as their second longest single-season streak since moving to San Francisco in 1958. They did so in 19 straight games in 1965. RHP Dylan Cease (1-4, 4.66 ERA) pitches the series finale for San Diego opposite Giants LHP Robbie Ray (7-1, 2.43).

Padres' Gavin Sheets gets injury update after scary wall collision in Pirates game
The post Padres' Gavin Sheets gets injury update after scary wall collision in Pirates game appeared first on ClutchPoints. Gavin Sheets gave the San Diego Padres fans a major scare on Sunday after crashing into the left-field wall during the fourth inning of their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Advertisement While tracking a deep shot from Adam Frazier, Sheets slammed into the padded fence at full speed. He dropped to the ground and stayed down for several minutes as team trainers rushed in. Thankfully, he managed to walk off the field on his own, and Brandon Lockridge replaced him in left field. Manager Mike Shildt later shared that Sheets suffered a head contusion, a sore hip, and a jammed wrist and thumb. He also noted the team is still checking for a possible concussion. Despite the multiple injuries, Shildt said Sheets had already shown signs of improvement in the hours following the incident. The timing could not be worse for San Diego. Advertisement Sheets has been one of the team's most pleasant surprises this season. After the Chicago White Sox let him go last November, the Padres picked him up on a minor league deal just before spring training. What started as a low-risk signing quickly turned into a key roster move. Since Opening Day, Sheets has become a major contributor, hitting .267 with an .817 OPS and has racked up 11 home runs, second only to Fernando Tatis Jr. on the team. He also leads San Diego in RBIs with 34. Known more for his bat, Sheets had mostly played first base and served as a designated hitter earlier in the season. But with the Padres struggling to produce from left field, he stepped in and made the transition. If he ends up missing time, the Padres may need to rely on utility players Tyler Wade and Brandon Lockridge. Lockridge finished the game in Sheets' place but was later replaced by Wade as a pinch-hitter when the Pirates changed pitchers. Advertisement While both are versatile, neither brings the same power or consistency at the plate as Sheets. The Padres came away with a 6-4 win, but the bigger concern now is the health of one of their most important offensive players. As medical evaluations continue, the team and its fans are hoping for good news. Losing Sheets for any stretch would be a tough challenge in the middle of an already competitive season.

Padres' Gavin Sheets avoids head injury after crash into wall
June 3 - San Diego left fielder Gavin Sheets said Monday that he passed all concussion tests following a hard face-first collision with the wall during the Padres' Sunday home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sheets was down on the warning track for several minutes after trying to prevent Adam Frazier's fourth-inning homer. He eventually was helped off the field and diagnosed with a head bruise, hip soreness and a jammed wrist and thumb. "All things considered, felt pretty good today," Sheets said prior to San Diego's road game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. "Woke up, head felt good. Last night, I was obviously sore, mainly in the hip. But I woke up today, and all things considered for the play, I felt pretty good." The left-handed-hitting Sheets wasn't in the Monday starting lineup despite the Giants going with ace right-hander Logan Webb. Tyler Wade got the start in left. Sheets, 29, has been a major surprise for the Padres this season. He leads the team with 34 RBIs and ranks second with 11 homers. Sheets was non-tendered by the Chicago White Sox following last season and the Padres took a flier on him and signed him to minor league deal just before the start of spring training. Sheets made the team and quickly turned himself a key cog as a first baseman and designated hitter. He is batting .267 and slugging .494 in 54 games and was just recently asked to play left field because of his hot bat. "I'll do whatever -- whatever they want me to do," Sheets said. "Whatever gets me in the lineup, whatever they need me to do, I'll do." With Sheets avoiding a serious head injury, Padres manager Mike Shildt had fun with the situation in which the 6-foot-3, 235-pound utility man ran full steam into the wall. "I think the fence is OK," Shildt said. --Field Level Media
