'I Was Broke': Gary Oldman Gets Honest About Starring In 1 Of The Most Hated Films Ever
Sir Gary Oldman has opened up about how he came to star in a film that's widely considered one of the worst in history. Back in 2003, the newly-knighted British actor starred alongside Matthew McConaughey, Patricia Arquette and Kate Beckinsale in Tiptoes (two of whom have gone on to win Academy Awards, as has Sir Gary). The film centred around a young man, played by Matthew, who gets his girlfriend pregnant, having concealed from her that every member of his family, including his twin brother, has a form of dwarfism. Sir Gary played Matthew's brother in the movie, for which he donned prosthetics and spent much of the shoot on his knees. During a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sir Gary admitted that he's never actually seen Tiptoes, and revealed that it came along at a difficult time in both his personal and professional life. 'I'll be very honest with you,' Sir Gary began. 'I had gone through a divorce and a nasty thing with a contractor.' He continued 'I ended up in California, in LA, at 42 years old, a single dad, and I was broke. And, ironically, I was living under the Hollywood sign, living in this rental. We had no furniture – thank God for Ikea.' Sir Gary said that when the offer for Tiptoes came along, he'd not worked for just shy of two years, and had been affected by an actors' strike. 'It was a bit of a rough time, and I needed to pay some bills, and I needed some money, and it was an actors' strike ontop of it all, which was a double whammy,' he admitted, noting the situation was a 'terrible time' for everyone in Hollywood. 'And then this film came along, this crazy idea, from this director, that I would play a little person. And I would play Matthew McConaughey's brother. 'There were several [issues]. First of all, I got locked in to doing a voice like that, because I had to sound like Matthew. We were brothers, so somehow, I had to sound like Matthew. So that was that. And then, I'm on my knees… desperate measures, desperate times.' 'I needed to work,' he insisted. 'And it was a crazy idea. But, would I do it now? No.' He said that if one good thing came out of the film, it's that several actors with dwarfism – including a pre- Game Of Thrones Peter Dinklage – were able to get work at a time when many performers were struggling. 'It was a good thing in that regard, because they were all going through the same thing I was going through, with no work,' Sir Gary said, insisting: 'But it's a misfire, to be sure. Not one I talk about, I'm so glad you brought it up.' Elsewhere in the interview, Sir Gary was also asked about another of the films he hasn't held in an especially high regard, The Fifth Element. He explained that his wife of eight years, Gisele Schmidt, has helped to 'convince me that it's a better film than I think it is'. Sir Gary explained: 'I'm contaminated, because I was the one who had that haircut. And I was the one who was wearing rubber. So, others can experience it in a different way. I get a little triggered when I see it, and I go back to that place of Jean-Paul Gaultier and rubber.' He added: 'Bruce [Willis] didn't like [that] either – you know that orange vest that he wears? He hated it.' A year after Tiptoes hit cinemas, Sir Gary made his debut as Sirius Black in the third Harry Potter film – a role with which he's still synonymous to many today. Since then, he also won an Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Over the weekend, it was announced that Sir Gary had been bestowed with a knighthood by King Charles for his services to drama.

Gary Barlow halts concert midway through song as he spots concert-goer's stunt
Gary Barlow brought his jam-packed Scarborough show to a sudden halt after spotting something in the crowd as he began to sing a classic Take That song Gary Barlow stunned fans by dramatically halting a jam-packed concert in Scarborough. As the audience swayed and sang to his catalogue of huge hits, the Take That man abruptly paused after spotting something in the audience. Gary, 54, had been sitting at the piano and just started a rendition of A Million Love Songs when he told his band to stop. Waving his finger in the air, Gary said: "Hang on, stop, stop stop. Stop everyone." As he gazed down to the crowd he asked: "What's going on down here at the front? Is that what we think it is?" Spotting a man in the crowd holding up a ring, cameras panned onto the audience member, with screams of delight soon following. Gary went on: "There we go. He's got the ring there everyone." Gary's concert-goer, Chris Calpin from York, looked delighted to have caught the singer's attention and continued to ask partner Kirsty Peake if she will be his wife. "Wow," Gary exclaimed as he clapped his microphone before a stunned Kirsty wiped away a tear. "Oh my goodness," the star gasped. "It take it it's a yes, right? It's a yes. It's a yes," he gleefully revealed to the rest of the concert goers who roundly clapped the couple. However, Gary then joked: "Now listen. It's all about timing. I'd started the bloody song." He then told the duo to make a space for themselves and have a dance, telling them "this number is dedicated to you both". As he wished them a happy future and thanked them for attending, he got the hit tune back under way as the audience sang along while the happy couple embraced. The magical moment comes as Gary was continuing his UK tour at Scarborough's Open Air theatre. Will Smith is also due to wow the crowds at the venue later in the summer. Earlier in the year Gary also won the hearts of his crowd as he celebrated the momentous occasion as Liverpool FC won the Premier League. On the day the title was sealed, Gary kicked off the English leg of his Songbook Tour with a bang in Liverpool. The Cheshire-born singer took to the city's Empire Theatre on to perform hits from his three-decade long career, and couldn't help but celebrate the sporting win from his boyhood club. He was greeted by red and white confetti falling onto the crowd as he beamed and proudly displayed the scarf to the crowd. The joyous occasion came despite the star earlier promising not to talk sports during the show. 'We book these tours 15 months in advance or something so there's no way we could have known something like this could happen. But when we played Nafield in 2019, Liverpool had just won the Champions League. So it seems like every time I book a gig in Liverpool, we do really well!" Gary said before the gig.

Viewers of the programme will learn the fate of Gary Sparrow after many questions were left unanswered following the show's controversial axing by the BBC. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 3 Goodnight Sweetheart is being revived Credit: BBC 3 The story of Gary Sparrow will continue in a new book Credit: BBC The programme, starring Nicholas Lyndhurst of Only Fools and Horses fame, originally ran from 1993 until 1999. Fans were left over-the-moon when it made a one-off comeback in 2016 with many who worked on the show hoping that it paved the way for another full-length series but the BBC failed to commission it for anything else. Now, the show's writing duo, Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, have teamed up to pen a new novel to explore what happened to Gary after the end of the TV programme. But the pair have already been forced to call upon fans help. The writers are aiming to raise £30,000 via a crowd-funding site in order to bring the book to life. At the time of publication, this petition had already amassed a whopping £11,500 in donations from 211 supporters. The book will only be published if the fund manages to reach the target amount. Teasing what is to come in the novel, a synopsis reads: "The new book will begin a little before the events of the 2016 televised story, Many Happy Returns, because though Gary's life since the end of the war has been mundane, in the spring of 1962, things are starting to heat up when Marilyn Monroe sings at President Kennedy's birthday party in that skin-tight dress. "When Gary first met Phoebe, he told her the girl he left behind in L.A. went by the name of Marilyn Monroe. "It was just his little private joke. It had never occurred to him that he would be living in the past, married to Phoebe when Marilyn became an international sex symbol in the 1950s. The Nineties sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart returned for a one-off special set in 1962 "For years, every time Phoebe's seen Marilyn on the silver screen, her insecurities have overwhelmed her. "What if Gary were to go back to Hollywood to regain the love of his life? "That is, until Marilyn's shock death at the age of 36, which brings all of Phoebe's old feelings back to the surface." Speaking of their decision to pen a new book and their hopes for its publication, authors Laurence and Maurice said: "Of all the shows we have ever written, Goodnight Sweetheart has the biggest and most devoted fanbase. "We were thrilled at the audience response to the 2016 special. Like our fans, we want to know what happened next to Gary Sparrow and his two families. "And now, Idiot Box [publishers] are giving us and you the chance to find out!" The TV show's premise followed Gary Sparrow as he lived a double life being able to time-hop between 1990s London and the Second World War in the 1940s.

In police interview, Gary man claimed self-defense; victim later found decapitated
As two Gary homicide detectives tried to pry information out of Ralph Stokes, Jr., he told them he shot Jimmijion Bailey before the other man could kill him. 'I made a mistake, but it was out of self-defense,' he said on a videotaped recording. Police and the victim's family disagreed. The shooting was over 'pure jealousy,' his sister Jakyla Bailey told the Post-Tribune in October. He started dating Stokes' child's mother about three weeks earlier, she said. Stokes, 24, was charged Oct. 13 with murder in Bailey's shooting death on Oct. 5. His body was found decapitated Oct. 11 on the 2300 block of Clay Street with his arms and knees bound with black tape. He is the only person charged in the case and has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors played part of his Oct. 12 police interview during Stokes' third bail hearing Tuesday. Stokes claimed as Bailey turned, he saw an 'extended clip' under the other man's shirt and fired one shot. When police asked where he shot Bailey, he claimed he didn't know. 'He could have taken me out,' Stokes said earlier in the interview. 'It was either me or him.' Gary Police investigations Cmdr. Ed Gonzalez and Det. Jason Szemes told Stokes evidence including the city's license plate readers showed he had help disposing Bailey's body. Was the body transported in your relative's car, Gonzales asked him. I am just taking responsibility for what I did, Stokes responded. A fourth bail hearing is on Aug. 1. The hearings will determine the strength of the evidence against him and if Stokes would be released before trial. Bailey's mother called police after he stopped responding to her calls and texts around 6:43 p.m. Oct. 5, documents show. His family tracked his cell phone location first to Woodlake Village Apartments on the 500 block of Vermillion Place. His mother headed there to talk to the woman he just started dating. The woman said she was looking for him, too. Then, Bailey's mother tracked his car to 9th Avenue and Roosevelt Street. She found it there — off the road, still running with her maroon Chrysler 200 in drive, she told police. Investigators were tipped off on Oct. 10 that Bailey was shot inside the girlfriend's apartment. His body was moved to the bathroom for several hours. His car was taken to 9th and Roosevelt to 'throw off the investigation.' The girlfriend changed her number after Bailey was killed, the affidavit states. 'Why would you do that with our child present,' the ex-girlfriend screamed. 'That's who I am,' Stokes responded. Two detectives went to the Stokes' house in the 700 block of Louisiana Street, where they found the Ford Flex, silver Infiniti and black Audi, his family's vehicles. License plate readers showed Bailey showed up to the apartment on Oct. 5. Later, the Chrysler 200 was driven off, followed by the black Audi toward 9th and Roosevelt, to ditch Bailey's car, before the black car headed back to the apartment. Then, the black Audi and Ford Flex head to the 2300 block of Clay Street, where Bailey's body was later found. Anyone with more information can call Det. Szemes at 219-755-3855. mcolias@
