Jets Urged To Dip Into Free Agent Market For Receivers
Jets Urged To Dip Into Free Agent Market For Receivers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the biggest knocks on the New York Jets' offense is the lack of quality weapons for Justin Fields. Garrett Wilson is the only player with "credentials" as a star, with Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, Malachi Corley, and Arian Smith forming the group underneath him. Advertisement With over $36 million in cap space, the Jets do have the funds to do a little free agent shopping if they so choose, but we know that head coach Aaron Glenn is taking a more youthful approach to building his roster. However, Bleacher Report believes the franchise needs to dip into the free agent market and provide Fields with some help. "It wouldn't hurt to add another proven pass-catcher to Fields' support group, either," Bleacher Report writes. "Wilson is a No. 1-caliber receiver, while Josh Reynolds and rookie tight end Mason Taylor were both sensible additions. The Jets have a lack of reliable depth at wideout, though. They should consider signing seasoned free agents like Keenan Allen or Tyler Boyd." Advertisement ESPN's Rich Cimini thinks that Reynolds is the clear No. 2 receiver behind Wilson as we head to training camp, so Lazard could be one to keep an eye on as the trade deadline comes into view later in the year. However, the Jets seem content with their options at receiver, and yes, they might be keeping their powder dry for next offseason. Nevertheless, adding a proven veteran on a one-year, low-cost deal might not be the worst idea. Related: Jets Fans React to 'Thiccer Kicker' Related: Can Jets' 'Biggest Question' Be Answered In 2025? Jets WR corps ranks bottom-5 in entire league
Jets WR corps ranks bottom-5 in entire league The New York Jets didn't receive enough production out of their wide receivers last season. Up until Davante Adams was acquired in October, it was Garrett Wilson and friends. And ultimately, the Adams trade backfired miserably, with new general manager Darren Mougey making the decision to release him earlier this offseason. Garrett Wilson continued to be his usual productive self. The former Ohio State standout recorded 101 receptions for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns, leading the offense in every major receiving category. It represented career highs for Wilson in catches, yards, and scores. Pro Football Focus recently ranked every wide receiver corps in the league. Unsurprisingly, they're low on the Jets' overall group. They placed them 28 of 32, making them a bottom-five unit. "Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams were the only Jets receivers to record 64.0-plus PFF receiving grades last season, and Adams is no longer in the fold," Trevor Sikkema wrote. "Running back Breece Hall was great as a receiver in 2023 (88.9 PFF receiving grade with 591 receiving yards) but took a major step back in 2024. There isn't much else in the way of proven talent. The Jets don't seem like they will be a very pass-happy team this season." Wilson's teammates have plenty to prove this season. The Jets especially need more out of sophomore third-round pick Malachi Corley. Allen Lazard is still hanging around (for now), and veteran pass-catcher Josh Reynolds was signed in free agency to add depth and experience. We'll see if any of them prove capable of stepping up and supporting Wilson in the passing game.

Jets Rookie Poised for Surprise Impact on Offense
Jets Rookie Poised for Surprise Impact on Offense originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets selected Georgia wide receiver Arian Smith with the 110th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he could prove this offseason that he deserves a role on the team. Advertisement In a recent article by Bleacher Report's Damian Parson, he picks five underrated rookie who he thinks could make a big impact in their first year in the league. And one of the players he chooses is the former Bulldogs wideout. "Smith's speed and explosiveness work well with manufactured touches... This New York offense should be similar to the Detroit Lions', and Smith could share similar usage as Lions receiver Jameson Williams," Parson wrote. "The Jets are testing Smith out as a returner on special teams... If his momentum transfers to training camp and the preseason, Smith will surely have a sizable impact on this Jets team." The 23-year-old receiver did have a bit of a drop problem when he was at Georgia, but he has reportedly been hard at work with the jugs machine to hopefully helm remedy that issue. In his final year with the Bulldogs, he led the team in receiving yards with 817, and he also had four touchdowns to go with that. Smith also put up some impressive numbers at the NFL Draft Combine, including a 4.36 in the 40-yard dash. Advertisement The Jets are looking for someone to go next to Garrett Wilson on the outside, and Smith could be a very intriguing option for new quarterback Justin Fields to throw to with his explosive athleticism. Insider Reveals Contract Negotiations With Jets Stars
Insider Reveals Contract Negotiations With Jets Stars originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets are looking to lock down a pair of their best players, one on each side of the football. Both wide receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Sauce Gardner are extension eligible, heading into the final year of their rookie contracts. Advertisement According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Jets have begun talks with both players regarding extensions. 'I'm told they've had some preliminary talks, exchange of numbers, had all that fun stuff as far as new deals,' Fowler said during SportsCenter on Saturday morning. 'They've got five-to-six weeks to see if they can come to an agreement before training camp.' Gardner and Wilson were present for mandatory minicamp this week, opposed to veterans such as Trey Hendrickson and T.J. Watt, who are threatening holdouts if new deals do not materialize. 'I just wanted to show my teammates and the coaches how much I'm bought into this,' Gardner said after Thursday's practice. 'I want to win. I want to be a part of changing the organization.' Advertisement Gardner also confirmed on Thursday that his camp and the Jets have begun discussions. 'My main focus is being the best football player I can be,' Gardner said, 'but my team and the Jets have been talking, and I feel really good about how the talks have been going. I don't really want to get into the numbers.' The Jets could take a page out of the Cincinnati Bengals' playbook and sign both players on the same day. After all, according to Gardner, he and Wilson are close, sharing goals and pushing one another to be better. 'Since Day 1, [Wilson and I] came here saying we have to push each other because we want to help the organization,' Gardner said. 'If you win in New York, it's big for your legacy individually, big for the organization. Fast-forward, we're going into Year 4 together, and we always talk about competing at practice and how we have to make each other better because we are the building blocks for this organization. We are the homegrown talent that [Aaron Glenn] talks about.' Advertisement Glenn, the Jets' first year head coach, spoke a lot to the media about valuing young players and building a core from within. While he wasn't with the organization when Gardner and Wilson were drafted, he's taking the responsibility of cultivating homegrown talent personally. Glenn has personally challenged Gardner to be a leader in the locker room. 'Here's what I want Sauce to do, and here's what I'll talk to him about who, about who he needs to be,' Glenn said on Thursday, via the Jets' team website. 'When you do lead, just let your influence do all the talking. How do you operate in the huddle with the players in the locker room? That speaks more than the rah-rah guy, and he understands that, because influence, to me, is what, really, leadership is about. How do you influence your other teammates? How do you influence people around you, no matter what? And I think he's done a really good job of that.' Glenn isn't the only Jets coach trying to challenge Gardner. After the Jets hired Steve Wilks as their new defensive coordinator, Wilks challenged Gardner to take his game to another level, a challenge that Gardner is taking on with open arms. 'I know I'm not perfect,' Gardner said, 'but the fact that [Wilks] is trying to get perfection out of me is what I need. I've had a lot of early success in the league, and the last thing I need is a new regime to come in here and allow me to be complacent — not saying that's who I am. It's great to have those types of guys who are going to demand a lot out of me and push me in ways I've never been pushed before.' Jets Have 'Clear-Cut Favorite' For No. 2 WR Role Behind Garrett Wilson
Jets Have 'Clear-Cut Favorite' For No. 2 WR Role Behind Garrett Wilson originally appeared on Athlon Sports. We are at the time of the NFL offseason, where players trend up or down the depth chart, and for the New York Jets, the receiver position is a fascinating watch. Advertisement With Garrett Wilson the clear top dog, it is a little jumbled behind him with Allen Lazard, Josh Reynolds, Malachi Corley, Arian Smith and Tyler Johnson all vying for snaps. As OTAs have been completed and minicamp wrapped up last week, the Jets' receiver depth chart is beginning to take shape slowly. ESPN's Rich Cimini, in giving his takeaways from minicamp, came away with a clear vision of who the No. 2 receiver is. "Josh Reynolds is the clear-cut favorite for the WR2 job, ahead of Allen Lazard, whose name will continue to circulate in trade rumors now that Rodgers has landed with the Steelers," Cimini wrote. "If the Jets decide to move Lazard -- a big if -- it probably wouldn't be until the end of the preseason. But only if they're comfortable with their receiver depth." Detroit Lions wide receiver Josh Reynolds runs the ball during the first half against the L.A. Rams at Ford Field in Detroit on Jan. 14, 2024. Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK Reynolds has skin on the wall with Tanner Engstrand, whom he spent time with while in Detroit, so he knows the system and knows what his coordinator wants. Advertisement And it seems to be paying off early. Granted, receivers aren't going against anyone "properly" at OTAs and minicamp, with limited physical contact, so training camp will be an interesting watch to see if Reynolds can continue his ascent and claim the No. 2 receiver role behind Wilson. Yes, it's early, but it isn't a good look for Lazard to be overtaken already, and that might point to his Jets future being elsewhere, as Cimini stated. Which, going by how Reynolds has fared so far this offseason, might not be such a bad thing.
