Indian billionaire Gautam Adani visits China amid US legal challenges to boost renewables
The visit, including to a solar module maker, underscores Adani's continued efforts to maintain momentum in renewables even as he faces heightened scrutiny abroad. Sagar Adani, who oversees the green arm of the conglomerate's sprawling empire, accompanied his uncle on the trip, according to a social media post by one of the companies he visited. The trip to China could signal a renewed push for international engagement as Gautam Adani tries to shake off controversies, from US legal troubles to investor concerns about corporate governance practices, following a bruising short-seller report in early 2023. Asia's second-richest person, along with his nephew Sagar, face criminal and civil charges in the US over their alleged involvement in a US$250 million bribery scheme to pay regional officials in India to lock in solar-power contracts. The Adani Group has denied the claims, though both Gautam and Sagar have curtailed their international travel since the indictment was announced. Idols to slippers: 100kg of waste removed from Yamuna banks
Noida: About 50 volunteers of YSS Foundation, a local social body, in collaboration with the GB Nagar district Ganga Committee, Noida Authority, and various civil society organisations, cleaned the banks of the Yamuna near Chhath ghat in Sector 94 to mark World Environment Day. The campaign, which was conducted under the guidance of the district forest department, collected over 100kg of waste across nearly 500 metres along the Yamuna bank, including single-use plastic, idols, clothes, shoes, slippers, school bags, and jute baskets. These were loaded onto a tractor and disposed of at Authority-designated dumpsites. The day also coincided with Ganga Dussehra this year, a festival celebrating the descent of the Ganges, hence, the programme began with a spiritual Yamuna Aarti accompanied by Vedic chanting, spreading the message of cleanliness, river conservation, and ecological consciousness. "Apart from puja material, the maximum waste collected was in the form of single-use plastic and wrappers of chips, corn, and other snacks. Other than these, there were household items and even electronic stuff like earphones, shoes, slippers, school bags, jute baskets and salt packets," Sachin Gupta, director of YSS Foundation, said. Indu Prakash, OSD at Noida Authority, called plastic pollution a "demon" that impacts not just nature but also mental, physical, and economic health. He hailed sanitation workers and volunteers as the real heroes of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. On the occasion, all participants also took a pledge to protect the Yamuna River, promote its cleanliness and conservation, and commit to a plastic-free lifestyle.

Knocked down?
When difficulties strike, we commonly think we can never shrug them off. We feel doomed to be in that situation forever. Rising like a phoenix from the ashes is a far- fetched idea. But when we are forced to be in that situation and see darkness everywhere, mythological stories form a guiding light. The story of Bhagirath can form an excellent example of the characteristic of resilience. Bhagirath's ancestors were burnt to ashes due to sage Kapil's curse. He aimed to free his forefathers from the curse and help them achieve moksh by bringing the mighty Ganges down to earth. He had to put in a tremendous effort and face many difficulties to achieve his mission. First, he had to please Ganga through rigorous penance. On her suggestion, he had to channel her flow by again doing rigorous penance for many years to please Shiv. Even when Shiv was pleased and let the Ganges flow from his hair, his woes did not end there. He had to continue his rigorous penance to please sage Jahna, who had kept Ganga captive for flooding his ashram. His resilience paid off after innumerable woes and hurdles, and he achieved his mission. Let alone divine stories, the life of the great English author Helen Keller can be an inspiring journey. Hearing-impaired, visually-impaired, she battled dark times of her life through sheer resilience. Confucius rightly said, 'Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.'
