English 'empowering' not 'shameful', must be taught to children: Rahul

English is "empowering", not "shameful", and must be taught to every child, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Friday (June 20, 2025) and alleged that the BJP-RSS don't want poor children to learn this language because they don't want them to ask questions and attain equality. Mr. Gandhi's comments came a day after Home Minister Amit Shah's reported remarks on English. In a post in Hindi on X, Mr. Gandhi said, "English is not a dam, it is a bridge. English is not shameful, it is empowering. English is not a chain -- it is a tool to break the chains." "The BJP-RSS don't want poor kids of India to learn English - because they don't want you to ask questions, move ahead, and attain equality," the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. In today's world, English is as important as one's mother tongue because it will provide employment and boost one's confidence, Mr. Gandhi said. "Every language of India has soul, culture, knowledge. We have to cherish them -- and at the same time teach English to every child. This is the path to an India that competes with the world, that gives every child an equal opportunity," the former Congress president said.

BJP has phobia of Gandhi-Nehru: Congress' Sukhdeo Bhagat on BJP criticising Karnataka housing scheme quota

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 20 (ANI): Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party for criticising the Karnataka Government's decision to raise minority reservations in housing schemes from 10 per cent to 15 per cent, Congress leader Sukhdeo Bhagat said that he had heard about hydrophobia, but BJP has a 'phobia' of 'Gandhi' and 'Nehru'. Deo alleged that the BJP was giving a 'Hindu-Muslim' angle to every scheme and stated that the party should exclude 'Muslims' from their 'Sabka Saath-Sabka Vikas' slogan. BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday tore apart the Congress-led Karnataka government over its decision to increase reservation in housing development schemes for minorities from 10 to 15 per cent. He termed it a 'perfect' example of how people keep the Constitution in their 'pockets' after 'tearing it into pieces.' Sambit Patra said the Constitution for the Congress party and the Gandhi family are secondary to appeasement. 'The Karnataka Cabinet passing the Muslim reservation in housing schemes yesterday is a perfect example of how the people who keep the Constitution in their pockets are tearing the Constitution to pieces... For the Congress Party and the Gandhi family, the Constitution is secondary to religious appeasement', Sambit Patra told reporters on Friday. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar rebuffed BJP leader Amit Malviya's criticism of the state government's decision to raise minority reservations in housing schemes from 10 per cent to 15 per cent, accusing the BJP of fostering division. Malviya had criticised the Congress government, alleging the hike was a move to 'appease its vote bank' at the expense of other communities, calling it 'blatantly illegal and unconstitutional.'Shivakumar accused the BJP of promoting divisive politics and said the government's decision was based on recommendations like the Sachar Committee Report and aimed at correcting implementation lapses in minority housing quotas. Addressing the media, Shivakumar said, 'I am least bothered about any other BJP leader's comments or anything. They create hatred and they will try to divide society. We always try to unite society. There is a Sachar Committee Report which states that 15 per cent of the reservation should be given on welfare schemes to minorities. In various schemes, we had given 10 per cent of houses' reservation to them but in rural parts of Karnataka, there are no minorities. All minorities are in urban section - some were 25 per cent, some others 30 per cent, somewhere else 12 per cent. So, there were a lot of lapses. That is why, my Minister proposed it.' The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved an increase in the reservation quota for minority communities under various housing schemes from 10 per cent to 15 per cent. (ANI)

Perfect example of keeping constitution in pockets after tearing it: Sambit Patra's huge bombshell on Karnataka govt over housing welfare scheme

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 20 (ANI): BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday tore apart the Congress-led Karnataka government over its decision to increase reservation in housing development schemes for minorities from 10 to 15 per cent. Sambit Patra asserted that he has come to expose the double standards and appeasement policies of the Karnataka Congress unit, and how they have always tried to disrupt the 'social fabric' of India. 'I am here today to expose the double standards and appeasement policies of the Karnataka Congress unit, and reveal how Congress has always tried to disrupt the social fabric of India... The Congress cabinet in Karnataka decided that Muslims will get a reservation in the housing schemes across the state, and the reservation will be increased to 15%', Sambit Patra said. The BJP MP slammed the Karnataka government and said that a religious angle has been brought to the housing welfare scheme. He mentioned that Congress always invites a 'long-term' disaster for the sake of short-term benefits. 'A religious angle has been added to this housing welfare scheme. There is no doubt that Congress often invites a long-term disaster to gain short-term political benefits', Sambit Patra asserted. The BJP MP said that the Public Procurement Amendment Bill 2025 in Karnataka showed that it has become a 'marketplace' for the Congress party's 'appeasement' politics. The Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Amendment Bill 2025 showed that welfare schemes have become a marketplace of appeasement for the Congress Party... Reservations based on religion and appeasement politics are always taken forward wherever Congress assumes power... The Congress Party is never apologetic about this because they accept the fact that they are into vote bank politics and not into welfare schemes. No governance, only divisive experiments', the BJP MP added. Patra's remarks come amid growing criticism from BJP leaders over the Karnataka Cabinet's approval on Thursday to raise the reservation quota for minority communities from 10 to 15 per cent under various housing schemes. The decision has triggered a political uproar, with the BJP arguing that religion-based reservation violates constitutional principles. Earlier, Karnataka Minister HK Patil stated that this move does not require any new rules to be drafted. 'The reservation for all minority communities will be increased. There are Christians, Jains, Buddhists,' the Minister said. (ANI)

BJP, RSS discouraging English learning to deny poor opportunities: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday attacked the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological fount, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), for discouraging the learning of English to deny India's poor the tools to question authority and access opportunity. 'English is not a dam, but a bridge. English is not a shame, but power. English is not a chain, but a tool to break the chains. The BJP and RSS do not want poor kids of India to learn English because they do not want you to ask questions, move ahead and become equal,' Gandhi wrote on X as he posted a video criticising the RSS for opposing the widespread use of English. '[RSS chief] Mohan Bhagwat says every day to not speak in English but in Hindi. But, if you look at the kids of those in the RSS and the BJP, everyone goes to England for studies… What is the thought behind it? Because they do not want you to enter the board rooms, or for you to get high-paying jobs. They want to go to English schools, carry on with their contracts… They want to keep the doors closed for you.' Gandhi underlined the role of English and native languages as a means of empowerment. He argued English plays a crucial role in instilling confidence and enhancing employment prospects, just like one's mother tongue. 'Every language of India has soul, culture, and knowledge. We have to cherish them, and at the same time, teach English to every child. This is the path to an India that competes with the world and gives every child an equal opportunity.'
