Jets fan wanted for downtown assault shortly before first playoff game
Police are seeking to identify a Winnipeg Jets fan who assaulted a man downtown, causing serious and long-term injuries, before the team's first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs. A 34-year-old man was found unconscious after he hit his head on the pavement while being assaulted by a stranger on the first 100 block of Navy Way at about 5 p.m. on April 19. The victim was transported to hospital with a head injury and later released. 'He will require further medical treatment for his injuries and is likely to have a lengthy recovery,' the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday, calling the incident a 'serious assault.' Investigators learned an argument started after the suspect caused 'a disturbance' outside the victim's home. When the victim went outside, he was 'immediately' thrown to the ground. The WPS major crimes unit spoke to witnesses, who described the attacker as tall, white, 25 to 30 years old, with shaggy brown hair and a short brown beard. He was wearing light blue jeans, white Nike runners with a black Swoosh, and a blue Jets Jersey with the current logo and the last name and number, 33, of retired defenceman Dustin Byfuglien. The incident happened shortly before the puck dropped for Game 1 of the Jets' first-round playoff series with the St. Louis Blues. About 5,000 fans were at a Jets whiteout street party outside Canada Life Centre that started before the game. Police reported no major incidents in connection with the Game 1 street party. The major crimes unit asked anyone with information about the attacker to contact them at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online. The news release did not say why police waited two months to announce the incident. fpcity@

Pope Leo XIV wears Chicago White Sox hat during papal audience
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope who was elected such in early May, was quickly discovered to be a White Sox fan. It was confirmed that, when he was still known as Robert Prevost, that he had even attended Game 1 of the 2005 World Series. A game the White Sox won, as they did every matchup of the Fall Classic in a sweep of the Houston Astros. He hasn't forgotten his allegiance to the South Side's team in the last 20 years, either: while hosting his weekly general papal audience on Wednesday in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, Pope Leo was wearing a White Sox hat. It's fitting, really, since the papal audience is meant to be an opportunity for visitors to see and hear the pope in person and receive his blessing. What better way to seem like a man of the people than to wear a hat from your favorite team? And of the White Sox, of all teams? It's been a long time since Frank Thomas was in their lineup, no one is wearing a White Sox hat unless they really mean it these days. The White Sox are 13-17 since May 8, when Robert Prevost become Pope Leo XIV. That doesn't sound great, but consider this: they were 10-28 before their boy became the head of the Catholic church. A 13-17 stretch, coming off of that awful start and having set the modern single-season losses record the year before? That's the stuff of miracles. The White Sox, for their part, have made sure the relationship isn't one-sided. Last month, they preserved that Game 1 appearance in the form of a graphic installation at Rate Field, right where Pope Leo sat during Game 1. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? See Pope Leo XIV rocking a Chicago White Sox hat in St. Peter's Square
During his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square on June 11, noted White Sox fan Pope Leo XIV donned a Chicago cap to take a picture with a newly married couple, the groom also sporting a White Sox hat. The White Sox's social media accounts were quick to share a photo of the pope wearing the White Sox hat, which he required him to take off his traditional zucchetto skullcap. Advertisement Shortly after being announced as the first American-born pope, Leo's brother revealed that "His Holiness," a Chicago native, supports the White Sox rather than the Cubs. Photos of Leo at a 2005 World Series surfaced and it turned out he was on camera in a crowd shot during ninth inning of the Game 1 broadcast. The club has embraced its most famous fan, putting up a Pope Leo mural at Rate Field, near the section he was sitting during the 2005 World Series. Chicago swept the Houston Astros in that Fall Classic, the club's first championship since 1917. Last week, the pope repped his alma mater by putting on Villanova hat for a photo in the Vatican, which was presented to him by members of an Italian American group.
