Scotland wants no part in further dangerous nuclear experiments
In 1987, I attended a Venstre political conference in Norway where Professor Torbjorn Sikkeland, the distinguished nuclear physicist and radiation biophysicist, explained, with illustrations, that nuclear fuels and nuclear waste would never be safely or securely contained: they are simply too corrosive. At the same conference, Professor Sikkeland also declared that it was accepted by his colleagues that hydrogen was the answer to world energy needs but it was unlikely to emerge as an option while the nuclear lobby stood in the way of necessary research and investment. READ MORE: Tommy Sheppard: Why I can't trust carbon capture or nuclear power to save us 30 years later, radiation corrosion still plagues nuclear reactors wherever and however they are built; there is still no safe containment for the corrosive nature of nuclear waste In 2025, however, despite the 40-year-old commitment to the common sense and morality of the Flowers Report, we now have a desperate government in Westminster: economically bankrupt, at the mercy of whatever corporate lobbyists come their way. Together, inexplicably, with the GMB, thrashing about for some sort of apparent direction, they have lurched towards another dangerous white nuclear elephant at Sizewell which, like EDF at Hinkley Point, no private enterprise will touch without massive, foolish government guarantees of unlimited funding – no matter how much overspend is required. Unquantifiable costs include decommissioning and waste disposal. The well-documented, appalling environmental consequences of uranium mining and nuclear dumps like the Dounreay Shaft and Drigg in Cumbria are clear evidence against the latest surge of pressure from the nuclear lobby. And Orkney and Galloway will remember that they are already targeted as 'sacrificial communities' for both uranium mining and high-level nuclear waste dumps. READ MORE: Energy minister 'won't apologise' for investment in nuclear power For nuclear waste, as we were warned, there is still no solution beyond digging deep holes in order to hide it – out of sight and out of irresponsible minds – for other generations to deal with. On this issue, the Flowers Report's references to morality are clearly lost on the current Westminster Labour administration. Furthermore, their increasingly desperate shrieks, demanding that the Holyrood government allows them to use Scotland for more nuclear reactors, missiles and nuclear waste, demonstrate very powerfully that Scotland is now firmly on a totally different political, cultural, economic, and environmental course. With EU support, our commitment to sustainable energy production is already far better established: we export more electricity than we can use; and we are working on the green hydrogen solution to storage which – were we already independent – would surely have precluded the Westminster-funded, profiteering cowboys currently playing around with potentially lethal lithium battery storage all over the Highlands. Westminster, flailing around with post-Brexit bankruptcy, does not have a meaningful energy, environment or defence policy: it has just broadcast its latest version of panicky, ridiculous and dangerous ideas. Scotland should have nothing to do with them – but continue calmly with policies which bypass more failed nuclear experiments and the production of nuclear waste that no-one, still, knows how to contain. Her revelation came during a chat with money expert Martin Lewis who is campaigning to change the way councils call in debts of unpaid council tax. Kate - who has been faced with a stressful £800,000 debt battle following the death of her beloved husband - then revealed how whilst her husband Derek was in a coma after being stricken by Covid, bailiffs turned up at her house. She revealed it was after she had unknowingly not paid her council tax for six weeks. More on Kate Garraway FINANCE FIGHT Kate Garraway update on her stressful £800k debt battle and £288k tax bill Kate explained the reason for the bill going unpaid, was because her husband was responsible for paying the council tax. She said she had "no idea" it was going unpaid - otherwise she would've paid it. Kate revealed how "awful" it had been for her family when bailiffs suddenly turned up at her door, especially during such a tough time. FINANCIAL NIGHTMARE This latest revelation comes after The Sun revealed how Kate had received a much-needed financial boost in her struggle to pay back huge debts. The cost of caring for Derek during his four-year health nightmare ran into hundreds of thousands of pounds. At the same time, Derek's psychotherapy firm Astra Aspera Ltd - which was jointly controlled by Kate - went bust owing hundreds of thousands to creditors, including a huge sum to HMRC. GMB's Kate Garraway reveals she still can't pay 'excessive debt' for late husband Derek Draper's care - on anniversary of his death A liquidator's report revealed how Kate has been trying to repay debts as well as a more palatable revised total. HMRC has submitted a preferential claim of £288,054, a third of its previous submission of £716,822. It's not known why the HMRC have dramatically dropped their demand. There are also creditor claims of and £196,548 from four other firms including a £50,000 bank loan. However, at this stage, there will be no pay out for any creditor after liquidator fees of £32k and 40 per cent of assets have been realised. A representative for Kate said: "Kate has met all that the liquidators of Derek's company have asked for and more over the past four years. 'She doesn't recognise these figures and is shocked that it's being presented in this way by them. "Caring for Derek and supporting her family when Derek could no longer run his own businesses has taken a huge financial toll on her but she's determined to put things right.' 4 Kate has opened up about the financial nightmare she has faced following Derek's death Credit: Shutterstock MORE MONEY WOES Meanwhile, earlier this week, Kate revealed she had been hit by another financial blow. The popular presenter told fans she's been frozen out of her bank accounts after changing her phone. Taking to social media to beg the bank for help, she wrote: 'Please please get in touch with me. 'I have not been able to access any of my Barclays accounts current or savings since Friday due to changing my phone handset and can't get through to anyone on customer service - please dm me.' Luckily Kate's plea was answered and the bank replied, telling her to send more information via direct message.

ITV Good Morning Britain halted as Ranvir Singh issues devastating breaking news update
Ranvir Singh interrupted Thursday's instalment of ITV GMB to deliver a heartbreaking news update Good Morning Britain was halted for major breaking news today. Ranvir Singh took over from show hosts Kate Garraway and Adil Ray as she updated viewers on the unfolding situation with regards to Israel and Iran. Kate and Adil had been discussing the day's headlines so far when the camera cut to Ranvir, with Kate saying: 'Now, Ranvir as the rest of today's news and I think you're starting with some breaking news, aren't you?' Ranvir replied: "Yeah, indeed, thank you so much, Kate. Breaking news that in a new wave of Iranian missile strikes, which have hit Israel in the last few hours, a major hospital in the city of Beersheba has suffered extensive damage, and buildings have been destroyed in Tel Aviv. "Meanwhile, Donald Trump has approved plans to attack Iran but has not made final decisions on whether to go ahead." A live news update then came from reporter Richard Gaisford in Tel Aviv, as he highlighted a devastating amount of damage in the area - "the world's largest diamond trading district" - with ITV viewers. He said: "This is the world's largest diamond trading area. The missile alert started at breakfast time this morning, and you're looking at pictures now of the Holon district of Tel Aviv. 'Extensive damage throughout this city in the centre of Israel, we heard ballistic missiles flying over our heads. "The air defence systems were in action. Certainly, it seems Iran still has the ability to target Israel with its ballistic missiles, and at this point, Israel is not able to stop all of them." The journalist then went on to explain that the strikes are a "really significant" attack, but highlighted the fact to GMB fans that what they were seeing was actually the result of a military assault earlier this week, as reports Manchester Evening News. He said: "This has been developing over the last few days, and it shows really at this stage that Iran is not yet done. "There had been some talks that perhaps the Israelis had been able to take out most of the missile sites. "That certainly doesn't appear to be the case that they are still able to launch and get their missile right into the heart of Israel." Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has urged the Iranian regime and Benjamin Netanyahu's Israeli government to de-escalate and pull back from the brink as he flew to the G7 in Canada earlier this week. It came as Iranian missiles rained down on Tel Aviv in response to the Israeli government's assault on military and nuclear targets in Tehran. Fighter jets and extra British military assets will be deployed to the Middle East as fears grow over an all-out war in the region, the PM revealed. The assets have been described by the Prime Minister as "contingency support" and it is understood aircraft began deployment preparations on Friday. The UK already has jets in the region as part of its Operation Shader contribution. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
