Council plans Compulsory Purchase of empty Govanhill flat

The property in a tenement in Garturk Street has been unoccupied since he owner was admitted to hospital in 2023. The owner has now moved to a care home and has no prospect of returning to the flat. Govanhill Housing Association had attempted to buy the flat when the owner still lived there but was not successful. If approved, the council will take ownership under a CPO and then transfer the flat to the housing association through a 'back-to-back' agreement, which will be legally agreed by both parties in advance of the CPO being promoted. A report to councillors states: 'Funding for this acquisition will be made available to the Housing Association via the Affordable Housing Supply Programme (AHSP) budget with a financial contribution being made by GHHA.' It added: 'The owner or any future court appointed persons who can act on his behalf will be given the opportunity to sell the property to GHHA on a voluntary basis prior to confirmation of the compulsory purchase order. The owner or court appointed persons will be entitled to seek compensation for the loss of their property from the date of confirmation, in accordance with statutory provisions.' Last week the Glasgow Times reported on work on a flat in Ibrox after the council acquired it under CPO, to turn it into a home for a larger family.
