Ex-BJP minister expresses concerns over party culture

Surat: Former Gujarat minister of state and BJP leader Nanu Vanani on Friday shared an open letter with party workers expressing displeasure at the culture within the BJP and corruption in govt. Vanani, currently secretary of Gujarat Hira Bourse (GHB), raised concerns about alleged corruption in town planning (TP) schemes in the Katargam area of the city in the recent past and had in 2023 also written a letter to the PM alleging corruption. Vanani was elected in 2012 and appointed minister in the 2014 Anandiben Patel govt. He was considered a Modi loyalist when there was unrest among the Patidar leadership in the BJP. In his letter, titled 'Ethics of Destruction That Applies to Congress, Also Applies to BJP', Vanani described how the people of Gujarat prefer a stable and peaceful political party. He called it the reason for the BJP coming to power. He said that he described the reasons for dejection and alienation felt in the minds of party workers in the letter. He further described how Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working not only for the betterment of the country but the entire world. He further shared various administrative models of govt. "It is the opinion of dedicated BJP workers that the BJP govt in the state is officer-centric, while in the Congress govt it was party worker-centric. There is a difference in corruption; in the Congress govt, it was in streets, while now it is done in offices," Vanani stated. "Of the BJP's election promises, hunger has been eliminated while fear of anti-social elements is almost removed, however, the promise of eliminating corruption completely is yet to be fulfilled," Vanani added. In the letter, Vanani expressed displeasure at 'readymade' leaders brought into the BJP from outside. He raised questions about their dedication to the party. Vanani described various elections and their impact on state politics in the letter. Through the description of each victory, he shared how the BJP evolved in the state since 1995 after the formation of the govt. On the current situation, Vanani wrote, "There is a situation of any (possible) change in the current political scenario of Gujarat. Once Congress was the strongest party, but its culture destroyed it." Calling his letter the feelings of BJP workers, Vanani told TOI, "I wrote the open letter to share the feelings of BJP workers who are spread all over Gujarat. Many of them have shared feelings in the recent past that are the same as I described in my letter." Vanani said he was not criticizing the party but expressing his concerns through the letter and expects leaders to think about it. Recently, Vanani took the leadership in raising concerns about alterations to TP Schemes 49, 50 and 51, where land of residential societies where people had been living for 20 years was declared reserved. Vanani became the GHB secretary in 2004 when the project was initiated. Later, the Gem and Jewellery Park development on 10 lakh square metres began and now 52 diamond polishing, lab-grown diamond and jewellery manufacturing units are operating there.

British Man Accused Of Deliberately Infecting Victims With HIV Faces Court Amid Rape Charges

A 42-year-old man, Adam Hall from Washington, England, has appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court facing serious allegations, according to The Metro. He is charged with five counts of rape involving five male victims and seven counts of causing grievous bodily harm related to the intentional transmission of HIV. Additionally, Hall faces two charges of controlling or coercive behaviour and one count of supplying the Class B drug GHB. Currently of no fixed abode, Hall has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on July 2. Detective chief inspector Emma Smith told The Metro: "Following a significant investigation, an individual has been charged with multiple counts of rape and other extremely serious offences." "We recognise the nature of the charges may raise concern and anxiety within our communities. We would encourage anyone who does have concerns or believes they have information which is relevant to this case to come forward," she added. "With criminal proceedings now active, we would also remind people that it is important to avoid speculation, both online and in our communities, as this could impact the case." Northumbria Police also reiterated that anyone who reports being a victim of any kind of sexual offence has anonymity. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks and damages the immune system's cells, reducing the body's ability to fight common infections and diseases. Without treatment, HIV can progress to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), a condition characterized by severe immune system damage. This leads to a higher risk of life-threatening infections and illnesses, as the body becomes unable to defend itself effectively against various health threats.

Star Harvard business professor stripped of tenure, fired for manipulating data in studies on dishonesty

A renowned Harvard University professor was stripped of her tenure and fired after an investigation found she allegedly manipulated data to support multiple studies she conducted. Francesca Gino, a celebrated behavioral scientist at Harvard Business School whose work has focused on dishonesty, was let go after the school's top governing board determined she tweaked observations in four studies so that their findings boosted her hypotheses, GHB reported. Harvard administrators notified business faculty that Gino was out of a job in a closed-door meeting this past week, the outlet reported. 3 Francesca Gino, a celebrated behavioral scientist at Harvard Business School whose work has focused on dishonesty, was fired by Harvard last week. Harvard University Harvard did not detail the professor's firing or tenure being stripped — citing it as a personnel matter — but told GHB that the school had not revoked a professor's tenure in decades. No professors have had their tenure revoked at Harvard since the 1940s, when the American Association of University Professors formalized termination rules, according to The Harvard Crimson. The Post has reached out to Harvard for comment. The star Ivy League professor — who had authored over 140 scholarly papers and snagged numerous awards — had come under scrutiny in 2023 when a trio of behavioral scientists published a series of blog posts on Data Colada accusing four of her papers published between 2012 and 2020 she had co-authored contained 'fraudulent data.' A preliminary investigation of Gino's work by Harvard was launched in October 2021 after concerns about the papers' sketchy data were brought to the school. 3 Harvard administrators notified business faculty that Gino was out of a job in a closed-door meeting. TEDx Talks/YouTube A full probe into the allegations was conducted in 2022 and 2023, where Gino and people who worked with her on the papers were interviewed, with faculty of the Harvard Business School also reviewing and analyzing her data, emails, and papers' manuscripts. An outside forensics firm was also hired to analyze her studies' data. When asked about the issues with her work, Gino asserted that issues with her work may stem from errors by her or her research assistants or potential tampering by someone with 'malicious intentions,' according to the university report. However, investigators rejected both theories and provided findings to HBS Dean Datar in March 2023. The Ivy League school placed Gino on unpaid leave and began termination proceedings. Investigators also suggested that the university audit Gino's work and request retractions for three of the papers; a fourth paper had already been retracted by the time of their inquiry. As the investigation was underway in 2023, Gino denied the allegations against her on her website. 'There is one thing I know for sure: I did not commit academic fraud. I did not manipulate data to produce a particular result,' she wrote. 'I did not falsify data to bolster any result. I did not commit the offense I am accused of. Period.' Gino — whose behavioral research studies relating to cheating, lying, and dishonesty received widespread media coverage over the past decade — filed a $25 million lawsuit against Harvard, Harvard Business School Dean Srikant Datar, and the Data Colada bloggers. 3 The Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Xinhua/Shutterstock In court filings, Gino claimed reputational damage along with loss of income and career opportunities due to the school's investigation and decision to place her on administrative leave beginning June 2023, in addition to the Data Colada blogs. 'Harvard shared their case. And while my lawyers have discouraged me from speaking out, I just need to say that I did not — ever — engage in academic fraud,' Gino posted on her website in March 2024. 'Once I have the opportunity to prove this in the court of law, with the support of experts I was denied through Harvard's investigation process, you'll see why their case is so weak and that these are bogus allegations.' However, a federal judge in Boston dismissed Gino's defamation claims against both Harvard and the Data Colada bloggers last September, The Harvard Crimson reported. The judge ruled that the professor was a public figure, allowing them to scrutinize her work under the First Amendment.
