It's an anniversary of good governance: PM Modi on 1 year completion of Odisha govt

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Mohan Charan Manjhi-led government and the people of Odisha on the completion of one year of BJP government in the state and explained how the new dispensation ushered in a new era of growth, unlike previous regimes which ignored the residents and focused only on enriching themselves. PM Modi, addressing the public gathering after a grand roadshow to mark first anniversary of the BJP government, said that the double-engine government was bringing double benefits to the coastal state and also elaborated on two key Central schemes - brought with the primary objective of improving the living standards of tribal population. 'June 20 is a very special day. Today, the first BJP government in Odisha has successfully completed one year. This anniversary is not just of the government; it is the anniversary of the establishment of good governance. This one year is dedicated to public service and public trust. This is a glorious year of honest efforts to live up to the trust of crores of voters of Odisha,' PM Modi said. PM Modi also spoke about his Canada visit for G-7 Summit and said that he chose Odisha over America. 'When I was in Canada, I received a call from President Trump. He invited for dinner while returning home. I declined his invite and told him that it was important for me to visit the sacred land of Odisha and pay obeisance to Lord Jagannath,' PM Modi told the crowd, eliciting loud cheers. Elaborating on the double benefits under the double-engine government, PM Modi said: 'People of the state were long deprived of many health schemes --- today they are availing benefits of Ayushman Bharat Yojana as well as Jan Aarogya Yojana. More than 23 lakh senior citizens above the age of 70 years, they are also drawing benefits under Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana.' PM Modi said that the nation has seen the Congress model for years, which offered nothing other than corruption, policy paralysis, the sprouting of middlemen but in BJP-ruled states, a new model of growth took shape, which is oriented towards public welfare. He also cited the model of Assam and Tripura, elucidating how the two states suffered during previous regimes but their fate and growth prospects changed after the BJP came to power there. PM Modi further said that prior to 2014, tribal communities neither got development nor participation in governance. The country had more than 125 tribal areas, all affected by the Maoist violence but instead of finding a solution, previous governments only sought to discredit them by labelling them as 'Maoist-affected'. PM Modi vowed to defeat LWE and said that hopes and dreams of tribal population will be brought to fruition. 'Two national schemes have been launched to bring all-round development of the backward as well as the tribal population and they will immensely benefit the residents here,' PM Modi remarked.

Trump assurance of US support for Aukus to Starmer some consolation for Albanese after meet cancelled

US President Donald Trump (left) and British PM Keir Starmer shake hands as they speak to reporters during the G-7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. PHOTO: AFP – A much-vaunted meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Donald Trump to discuss the future of a three-way security pact that also involves Britain did not take place as planned at the Group of Seven (G-7) Summit in Calgary, after the American leader abruptly left to deal with the Israel-Iran war. Nevertheless, Canberra's concerns about the US commitment to the Aukus pact – which involves the supply of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia at a cost of A$368 billion (S$306.73 billion) – were partially assuaged when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer appeared to secure the backing of the mercurial Mr Trump for the deal. Israel-Iran conflict threatens to snowball with both countries intensifying missile attacks

Tel Aviv/Tehran, June 19 (UNI) The Israel-Iran conflict threatened to snowball on Thursday with both countries intensifying missile attacks against each other, and Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issuing a stern warning to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei saying he can 'no longer be allowed to exist". The warning came after Iran launched a missile attack on Israel. One of the missiles struck a hospital in southern Israel. The hospital, Saroka Medical Center, is the largest hospital in Southern Israel. About 50 people were reportedly injured in the attack. Israel struck Iran's nuclear site Arak heavy water reactor. However, Iran denied that any of its missiles had hit a hospital and said it was an Israeli military base and intelligence center. "The main target of the attack was the Israeli Army Command and Intelligence Base and the Army Intelligence Camp located in the vicinity of the Saroka Hospital. The hospital was exposed only to the blast wave,' Iranian news agency IRNA said. The Israeli Defence Minister said 'Khamenei will be held accountable for the hospital strike".' "The cowardly Iranian dictator sits in the depths of a fortified bunker and fires missiles at hospitals and residential buildings in Israel. These are war crimes of the most serious kind-and Khamenei will be held accountable for his crimes," Katz said in a post on X. He said he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had instructed the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) to increase the intensity of attacks against strategic targets in Iran and against government targets in Tehran "to remove threats to Israel". The Israeli Defence Minister described the Iranian Supreme Leader as a 'modern day Hitler' and said a dictator like Khamenei heads a country like Iran and has made the destruction of the State of Israel his declared goal. 'This horrific goal cannot be allowed to continue or materialise,' Katz said. The Israeli Defence Minister's warning comes days after US President Donald Trump asked the Iranian leader to surrender and warned that they knew where he was hiding and would get him. President Trump also cut short his visit to Canada where he was attending the G-7 Summit. Meanwhile diplomatic parleys to defuse the snowballing crisis continue with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi saying Iran would participate in the nuclear talks in Geneva on Friday with France, Germany, UK and the EU. Araqchi is also expected to attend a special session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Turkey on Saturday. EDS: XXX Pick up suitably from earlier Iran-Israel stories. UNI RB RN

Watch: Canada PM asked if Nijjar came up in meeting with Modi. His reply was…

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday parried a tough media query on Hardeep Singh Nijjar's murder after meeting with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, saying he needed to be "careful about further commentary". Carney met PM Modi in Canada on the sidelines of the G-7 Summit, after months of India-Canada acrimony over the Justin Trudeau government's continued tirade against New Delhi over the Khalistani terrorist's murder in 2023. India maintains that it had no role in the terrorist's murder and that Canada never provided actionable evidence. The Modi-Carney meeting has paved the way for the improvement of diplomatic ties between the two nations, which had hit rock bottom last year when New Delhi recalled its senior diplomats over being accused of having been involved in the murder. Also read: 12 meetings in 10 hours: PM Modi's packed day at G7 Summit in Canada Responding to the question as to whether he spoke to PM Modi about Nijjar's killing in Canada, Carney appeared to exercise caution, unlike his predecessor, Justin Trudeau. "We discussed the importance of having the law enforcement dialogue, not just dialogue, cooperation directly, the importance of addressing transnational is a judicial process that's underway, and I need to be careful about further commentary," he told the reporter. New Delhi and Ottawa have agreed to restore high commissioners to each other's capitals. The breakthrough was achieved after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Canada to attend the G7 Summit, held a "positive and constructive meeting" with his Canadian counterpart. "The meeting discussed the importance of the India-Canada relationship, which is based on shared values, democracy and the rule of law, people-to-people contact and many other commonalities," Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said in a video statement. The official assured that other diplomatic steps will follow to restore India-Canada diplomatic relations.
