Paris extends summer bar and restaurant terrace hours, angering noise-weary neighbors
When it comes into effect on Saturday evening, the change will likely go unnoticed amid the general hullabaloo of the Fête de la Musique, the nationwide celebration of music that takes place every year on June 21. However, from that day through to September 14, around 4,000 summer terraces in Paris will be allowed to stay open to the public until 11 pm, an hour later than the standard 10 pm closing time. Since the crisis triggered by the Covid-19 epidemic, restaurateurs in the French capital have been eligible for permits to expand their terraces onto sidewalks or parking spaces between April 1 and October 31. In the intervening years, the temporary terraces have become the subject of heated tensions between Paris City Hall, eager to boost the restaurant sector, and local residents, frustrated by noise disturbances, who have the support of opposition politicians. City Hall's announcement of the extended hours on June 5 drew a quick response from neighborhood associations around the city, especially from the dynamic 10 th, 11 th and 18 th arrondissements, in the northeast. They issued a joint statement denouncing "lies" by Paris City Hall to justify its decision. Among other things, they criticized a lack of dialogue with city authorities, a recurring complaint among such groups, whose real representativeness is difficult to measure.

Fête de la Musique 2025: How to make the most of Germany's all-night music party
Fête de la Musique, held every year on June 21st, began in France but is increasingly popular in other countries, including Germany. This year, it falls on a Saturday, so festivities should be doubly raucous. Here's a look at what you need to know about this massive street party and how you can make the most of it. What is Fête de la Musique? Fête de la Musique was first held in France in 1982. In France, the evening features tens of thousands of musicians of all stripes playing in the street, from jazz quartets to underground DJs. The idea has caught on internationally, though usually on a smaller scale. It always takes place on the summer solstice, meaning there is plenty of sunlight to continue enjoying the performances as the evening goes on. Events usually begin in the afternoon, lasting well into the early hours. Performances are often free. Despite seeming to be very French, the idea for Fête de la musique came from an American - Joel Cohen - in the 1970s. He was at the time working for French national radio and he had the idea of spending a whole day - the longest day of the year - celebrating music. What's on this year In Germany, more than 140 towns and cities across the country will hold events. Friedrichshain disco band Tango Bravo will play at 7:30pm in the Bärenzwinger in Mitte. The four-man band won the SPH Music Masters, Europe's largest live music competition, this year, so expect a packed-out venue. Classical music fans can head to Kulturforum Berlin at 7pm to see the Berlin Philharmonic play works by Tchaikovsky and Beethoven, completely free. You can find the complete Berlin Fête Programme here . Hannover At the Hohes Ufer, Bazzookas from the Netherlands return for the sixth time with skapunk performances atop their yellow school bus, playing sets throughout the evening. The Ballhof stage promises eclectic and experimental sounds. The Pariser KunstKollektiv curates an adventurous program ranging from soulful pop and artsy electro to experimental funk and drum & bass. For a more relaxed setting, the singer-songwriter stage outside Fairkaufhaus on Limburgstraße 1 will host acoustic sets from artists including Nora Lotz and Frederik Tietz from 3pm to 8pm. More events in Hannover are found here . Advertisement Hamburg From 2pm, Altona train station will host live performances by the Knut Richter Duo, classic French songs with Rendez-Vous Chansons Swing, and the Balkan-inspired Strandgut Plus band. Fête de la Musique returns with Sun-El Musician, Bongeziwe Mabandla and a focus on skills development
Sun-El Musician is one of the headline performers at the 2025 Fête de la Musique. Picture: Supplied Image: Supplied The Fête de la Musique returns to Victoria Yards for its 14th edition, promising more than just a vibrant celebration of music, culture, and community, it's also a platform shaping the future of South Africa's entertainment industry. Headlining this year's festivities are two local superstars Sun-El Musician and Bongeziwe Mabandla, who performed at the festival more than a decade ago and have since become nationally celebrated artists. But the festival's true legacy lies beyond the stage. Through its ongoing partnership with the Live Music Lab, Fête de la Musique offers a vital skills development programme for young professionals, giving them a rare, hands-on experience in the live music and events space. Brad Holmes, founder of Bassline Jazz Club and co-organiser of the festival, explained why mentorship plays such a crucial role in empowering South Africa's next generation of industry leaders, particularly during Youth Month. 'From the previous Live Music Lab intake, I picked out that some individuals love the industry and hope to contribute to it in a meaningful way; however, their passion is undirected, thus resulting in a blurry vision, making the path harder to navigate,' he shared. 'Age tends to play a factor in this; I could not properly articulate what I wanted to do until the age of 26. The guidance from a mentor can assist individuals to identify their interests, hone in on their strengths, and niche their interests based on their experiences.' Holmes also stressed that connections are everything in the entertainment industry. 'In an industry that is relationship-based, having a mentor can help erect a bridge between you and the network one needs to help start or propel their career. Video Player is loading. The Live Music Lab programme ensures trainees are not only trained but are fully industry-ready. 'Each trainee gets the opportunity to shadow at two events across various roles, ensuring everyone develops both technical and soft skills,' Holmes explained. 'The programme also provides valuable industry insights and networking opportunities, equipping trainees with the confidence, knowledge, and connections needed to succeed in the competitive entertainment landscape.' And the results are already showing. 'From the first 30 people we enrolled in the programme, 19 are working permanently in the industry. "I have a 2024 and 2025 trainee who are both currently working with me, and I can see in real-time that the curriculum we have designed efficiently equips individuals to navigate their roles upon exit,' he proudly noted. When asked what essential qualities young people need to succeed behind the scenes in festivals and event production, Holmes was clear: 'There are multiple critical qualities, but I would like to highlight the importance of having an entrepreneurial mindset, being a lifelong learner, the ability to adapt to circumstances, and the will to continuously reinvent yourself.' In addition to developing behind-the-scenes talent, Fête de la Musique also emphasis preparing emerging artists for the real world of the music business. 'Being a platform for aspiring and emerging artists, it is pivotal to provide talent with the necessary knowledge and skills required to help them navigate the industry after the festival,' Holmes said. 'With FDLM, our intention is to assure career progression as soon as they leave the stage. For instance, our workshop this year is curated with the intent to impart artists with the knowledge required to host their shows, as nowadays it is quite challenging for artists to get gigs.' As South Africa celebrates its youth this month, Holmes also offered a simple yet powerful piece of advice to all young creatives hoping to break into the industry. 'Never give up!' The 2025 Fête de la Musique line-up features over 20 acts selected from more than 300 applications, chosen by a respected local and international jury. The full line-up includes: Akeeda, Jabulile Majola, Namhla Badela, Thabiso Thabete, NdumzDJ, Brandon Aura, IDAHUM, KatzTheSingR, Tumi Dibakoane, Tsoness, Afro Moment, Shepard Brothers, Tshepo Molefe, Thando Nkosi and Many More Poetry, KHNYSA, KGZOO, Little Music School in the Valley, and Poet Bass'd Band.
