Bethenny Frankel Got Her First Job to Save Money for a House Party

In series Office Hours, we ask people in powerful positions to take us through their first jobs, worst jobs, and everything in between. This month, we spoke to Bethenny Frankel, one of the O.G. Real Housewives of New York, who spun her on-screen popularity into a business empire. After founding Skinnygirl, which started as a line of guilt-free cocktail mixers, in 2009, Frankel sold the company for a reported $100 million in 2011. (Though, she still brings in seven figures annually from Skinnygirl licensing, according to the brand.) In 2017, she founded BStrong, a disaster relief initiative that has raised over $400 million to date for causes, including helping communities recover from Hurricane Helene and the Maui and L.A. wildfires. Over the last several years, Frankel has exploded on TikTok and Instagram for her unfiltered product reviews and no-holds-barred opinions. She also hosts her own podcast, Just B with Bethenny Frankel. Below, the reality TV star talks about the words she lives by, the on-brand reason she got her first job, and her all-too-relatable feelings towards alarm clocks. My first job I worked at a bakery in high school, and truthfully, I was working there to save up money to have a party at my house. My worst job My worst job was a PR company in L.A. where I had to lick envelopes for invitations. [This woman] scolded me for being on a personal phone call, which I certainly didn't understand. You don't need to have a brain to stuff envelopes. The best career advice I've received Don't believe the love; don't believe the hate. Don't buy into either. How many alarms I set in the morning Alarms? Zero. Negative zero. They're so jarring. Even with my daughter, if she's sleeping late, I'm letting her sleep late. I believe the body needs to sleep until the body needs to sleep. My beauty essentials It's not about the brands; it's about the steps. It's about consistently cleansing, only wearing makeup when completely critical or being paid, exfoliating. We spend our 20s and 30s stripping our skin when really we should be feeding our skin—nourishing and layering the skin versus what young girls all try to do, which is dry it out. The biggest lesson I've learned Try to please everybody, and you end up pleasing nobody. And if it were easy, everybody would do it. That's the truth. My go-to power outfit I don't really do that, because I'm such a strong personality. It's too much. My entire wardrobe in New York City is all black and severe. I don't really wear power clothes anymore. I don't need them. My ultimate career philosophy Just do it. Never listen to people that tell you it can't happen. I have 10 very lucrative, seven-figure businesses, and for each one of them, I was told no, it couldn't happen. I'm building the plane while I'm flying it. If I come up with a cocktail, and I like it, and people respond to it in that moment, I'm taking that to the next level. If I do something that's working, I lean into that. Why I review products on my social media Many people, even if they don't like me, believe me. A lot of them don't like me because I'm telling the truth. It's not performative; I love the find. I love a treasure hunt. And I'm aware that I am changing lives for small businesses. Big brands started as small brands! You have no idea how many people have reached out to say that their lives changed [after I posted about them]. It's amazing. It's a game-changer. But then sometimes I say something, and it could change your business in the opposite direction, but I don't think that's bad. I'm saving them money, because they're going to spend so much thinking they're great, because no one tells a new entrepreneur they suck. They go out there and spend all this money betting on themselves, and it's not going to hold up. It's going to cost them so much more in the long run. If I don't like it, what am I going to do? You enter at your own risk. You send it here, and you want me to review it, and I can decide to do what I want. The customer wins because the customer is getting an honest review. The brand wins because they are getting the business, or the brand wins because they're getting real advice. My proudest career moment Being on the cover of Forbes. Or, I mean, Sports Illustrated is up there right now.... How I maintain a work-life balance The people around me say to me that I take care of myself. Danielle [La Testa], who works with me, always says, 'You give your body what it needs.' I think I just self-regulate. I get very activated, very stressed. I feel myself grinding my teeth, then I get a massage, or I take a bath. Or I take a walk. It's a lot of highs and lows, but I very much help myself regulate. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Bethenny Frankel sells her Connecticut mansion for nearly $8M after major renovation

Businesswoman and former "Real Housewives of New York" star Bethenny Frankel sold the home she owned in Connecticut. The property, a roughly 3-acre estate known as "Applejack Farm" in the Greenwich area, fetched $7.825 million in a recent transaction. Corcoran Centric Realty's Jeff Jackson represented Frankel, while Martha Jeffrey and Anne Oglivy of Sotheby's International Realty were involved on the buyer's side of the deal for the historic Greenwich home, according to a press release. 'Shark Tank' Star Barbara Corcoran Puts $12 Million Penthouse Up For Sale Greenwich is a town located in the southwestern part of the Constitution State and is known for its affluence. The median home price there was $1.8 million in May. The former Frankel home features both a main house and a guest cottage. Read On The Fox Business App The house has five bedrooms, six full bathrooms and two half-baths, according to the press release. It is also replete with a spacious kitchen boasting La Cornue appliances, a large center island and dark cabinetry. A formal sitting room within the home has wood-paneled walls and a large fireplace. Beamed ceilings and ornate molding are present in many of the rooms. The home also has a media room, bar and gym. The guest cottage has two bedrooms, two full bathrooms and one half-bath, according to the release. Former Obama Vacation Retreat On Martha's Vineyard Goes On Sale For $39M There is also a "party barn" at Applejack Farm for entertaining in a separate space. The property offers "mature specimen trees," verdant lawns, a stone patio and a covered porch for enjoying the outdoors, the release said. Applejack Farm was founded in 1743. Parts of it underwent a redesign under Frankel's ownership while holding onto some of its historic elements, Architectural Digest reported. "In a town where demand continues to outpace supply, even at the highest end of the market, the opportunity to own a legacy estate such as this one is very rare. Therefore, it is no surprise that the home was swiftly snapped up, epitomizing Greenwich's current market trends," Jackson said in a statement. Frankel, known for her role on "Real Housewives of New York" and establishing the Skinnygirl lifestyle brand, paid about $4.2 million for the property in 2021, according to House Beautiful. While the former reality TV star has parted ways with the Greenwich estate, she still has homes in the Hamptons, New York City and Miami, with Florida serving as her primary residence, according to the outlet. The New Palm Beach? Jupiter, Fl, Is Drawing Luxury Homebuyers Frankel told the New York Post this week she "poured" her "heart" into "transforming" the Greenwich estate "into a true family compound" while she owned it. "I love real estate, I find properties very personal and the family moving in has acquired a generational historical gem, one that only 20 families have inhabited since the 1700s," she said. More than 13,800 people lived in the Greenwich area as of 2020, according to the Census article source: Bethenny Frankel sells her Connecticut mansion for nearly $8M after major renovation

Iranian missiles penetrated Israel's air defenses Friday. How ironclad is the system?

JERUSALEM — Israel's multilayered air-defense system was tested Friday night as Iran launched ballistic missiles at Israel, with some reportedly landing in Tel Aviv. Israel's military said it had intercepted the vast majority of the missiles but that some left 'a few impacts on buildings.' An Associated Press reporter saw smoke rising in Tel Aviv after an apparent missile strike. A Tel Aviv area hospital said it was treating 15 injured civilians. The attack was a stiff challenge for Israel's air-defense system, which has intercepted projectiles fired from Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Iran since the start of the war Oct. 7, 2023. They have ranged from short-range rockets to medium-range missiles to attack drones to ballistic missiles like those fired Friday night. U.S. ground-based air defense systems in the region were helping to shoot down Iranian missiles, said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the measures. But the vast majority of Israel's air defense over the past year has been carried out by Israel itself. Over the decades, Israel has developed a sophisticated system capable of detecting incoming fire and deploying only if the projectile is headed toward a population center or sensitive military or civilian infrastructure. Israeli leaders say the system isn't 100% guaranteed, but credit it with preventing serious damage and countless casualties. Here's a closer look at Israel's multilayered air-defense system: This system developed with the U.S. is designed to intercept long-range missiles, including the types of ballistic missiles Iran launched. The Arrow, which operates outside the atmosphere, has also been used in the current war to intercept long-range missiles launched by Houthi militants in Yemen. Also developed with the U.S., David's Sling is meant to intercept medium-range missiles, such as those possessed by Hezbollah in Lebanon. It has been deployed on multiple occasions throughout the war. This system, developed by Israel with U.S. backing, specializes in shooting down short-range rockets. It has intercepted thousands of rockets since it was activated early last decade — including thousands of interceptions during the current war against Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel says it has a success rate of over 90%. Israel is developing a new system to intercept incoming threats with laser technology. Israel has said this system will be a game changer because it would be much cheaper to operate than existing systems. According to Israeli media reports, the cost of a single Iron Dome interception is about $50,000, while the other systems can run more than $2 million per missile. Iron Beam interceptions, by contrast, would cost a few dollars apiece, according to Israeli officials — but the system is not yet operational. Frankel writes for the Associated Press.
