The best running watch I've tested for most people is $100 off — get the lowest price ever now
If I got a dollar every time someone asked me which Garmin watch to buy, I'd probably still need to work for Tom's Guide, but I'd be a lot richer. My recommendation, and one of my favorite Garmins ever, is the Garmin Forerunner 265, and it it's $100 off right now. The fantastic little watch just dropped to $349 from $449 on Amazon in both the 42mm and the 46mm versions. The watch has been replaced by the newly released Garmin Forerunner 570 as the brand's mid-tier Forerunner, but don't let this put you off — it's still a fantastic running watch to have on your wrist, whatever you're training for. The Forerunner 265 is on sale in both sizes right now on Amazon. In the larger 46mm watch, it looks like the deal is on the aqua and black color watch. In the 42mm version, the watch is on sale in black/yellow, white, and pink. Act fast, this deal won't be around forever. In Garmin Forerunner 265 review, I said it was the best Garmin running watch for most people, and I stand by my decision, even with newer, snazzier watches on the market two years later. The Forerunner 265 is extremely light and comfortable, with a stunning AMOLED screen, and it has a lot of the advanced training features usually reserved for Garmin's more premium watches. At the time I wrote, 'The Forerunner 265 feels like a more premium running watch and it's all thanks to its beautiful screen. I've loved having this watch on my wrist — it's slim, it's lightweight, and when next to my Garmin Fenix 7, it looks so much brighter, whether I'm in the gym, or out in direct sunlight.' Next to my Apple Watch, the Forerunner 265 is lighter and more comfortable. I wear the 42mm version, which has a 15-day battery life in smartwatch mode, and a 24-hour battery life in GPS mode. The larger 46mm 265 has 13 days in smartwatch mode, and 20 hours in GPS mode. Normally, it's the larger of the two watches that has the longer battery life, but it seems with the bigger and brighter screen, the larger 265 will need charging ever so slightly sooner. If you're training for your first race or just hoping to get faster and stronger, this watch has plenty of features to help you train better and recover faster. It's a fantastic gadget to have on your wrist, and at $349, it's a fantastic price right now.

Garmin Venu X1 Takes Smartwatches In An Unexpected Direction
Garmin Venu X1 The Garmin Venu X1 is the latest watch in Garmin's most smartwatch-like family, and it is the most expensive Venu yet by some margin. Garmin Venu watches typically introduce us to new smartwatch features lines the Forerunner and Fenix don't even have yet, like voice assistant support. But the Garmin Venu X1 starts to bring in features of those more athlete-driven series. It's the screen you may notice first, though. The Garmin Venu X1 screen is a rounded rectangle, and the largest seen in a Garmin watch like this to date. It has resolution of 448 by 486 pixels, is an AMOLED display, and measures two inches across. Screen bezels appear to be far smaller than in other Garmin watches too, leading to fairly petite — for the screen size — dimensions of 41mm by 46mm. At first glance it looks comparable to something like a Huawei Watch Fit 4 Pro, a series that was often compared to the Apple Watch in its earlier generations. A Garmin Venu X1 is more expensive than the base model of either, though. It costs $799, and comes in either Moss green or black colors. What can possible justify such a high cost for what isn't exactly the last word in smartwatch style? It does have core features to match other Garmin watches in the same cost ballpark. On-watch maps is the most obvious high-end addition. You will be able to store many countries' worth of map data on the 32GB storage, complete with roads and points of interest to let you navigate when offline. And those maps may well look better here than they do on any other Garmin watch. After all, the original Garmin watch made famous for its maps, the Garmin Epix from 2015, had a rectangular screen. Garmin Venu X1 rear The Garmin Venu X1 also has a high-grade build, of a style that many confuse some shoppers. This is a part titanium watch, but the metal parts are hidden. The back of the cashing is titanium, but the rest is Garmin's 'fiber-reinforced polymer' plastic. This stuff is great, and tough as anything, but does mean the most expensive-looking and expensive-feeling parts are not up front. It does keep weight low, though. The Garmin Venu X1 weighs just 34g, or 40g with the nylon strap. Comfort is likely to be exceptional among Garmin wearables. What else is there to note? The Garmin Venu X1 has an ultra-hard Sapphire Crystal display surface, just moderate 5ATM water resistance, and is just 7.9mm thick — very thin. Despite that thickness, the Venu X1 still has an LED flashlight built into its top. Garmin Venu X1 LED flashlight As in the Venu 3, a microphone and speaker are baked-in, allowing for handsfree calls, voice commands to control the watch's features and interactions with your phone's own digital assistant. This is the first Venu-series watch that could be a direct alternative to a Forerunner 970 or Fenix 8 for true fitness enthusiasts. But there is one catch. The Garmin Venu X1 only claims to have eight days of battery life. And that drops to two days if you use the always-on mode. Garmin battery life typically halves in 'always-on' rather than dropping to a quarter, suggesting the watch's screen is exceptionally bright, much like the Forerunner 970's. There are a few important feature omissions to note, too. The Garmin Venu X1 does not have the company's top HR sensor hardware, meaning you will not be able to take ECG readings. It also lacks dual-band GPS, suggesting that while Garmin has made the Venu X1 for serious exercisers, it's not really made for adventuring but for the suburbs. Dual-band GPS improves location tracking in areas with poor signal. The Garmin Venu X1 costs $799 and will be available to order from June 18.

Buzzy AI health startup Superpower is making another acquisition to power its food-as-medicine push
Consumers increasingly want to take control of their health — including by taking control of what they eat. Buzzy AI startup Superpower just made its second acquisition of the year to capitalize on that interest. Superpower is building a health AI "super app" that combines biannual lab tests with users' health histories to create personalized lifestyle recommendations. The startup announced $30 million in Series A funding, led by Forerunner, just last month. Now, Superpower is buying at-home lab testing company Base, Business Insider has learned exclusively. Base, started by former Amazon engineer Lola Priego, provides at-home blood and saliva tests to help consumers improve habits like their sleep and diet with personalized lifestyle recommendations. It was Base's diet analysis business that sold Superpower on the deal. Superpower CEO Jacob Peters told BI that the startup bought Base primarily for its wealth of nutritional data, which he said "would save us a lot of clinical R&D" as Superpower digs deeper into food-as-medicine care. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Priego launched Base in 2019, and the company last raised a $3.4 million seed round in 2021 led by Female Founders Fund. Superpower is far from the only player interested in the nutrition market. Investors are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into nutrition care startups like Nourish and Fay Nutrition, while movements like Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s " Make America Healthy Again" are taking hold. Those trends, too, are picking up steam with the explosion of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and a growing consumer fascination with longevity, as some look to hack their health and extend their lifespans. Superpower hits on that longevity care demand, with scores provided on its app measuring users' "biological age" and overall health. The startup even hired its own "chief longevity officer" in September. Still, Peters said Superpower isn't a longevity startup, adding that he thinks most consumers simply want to get a better hold on their health — "If you superpower your health, you superpower your life." Superpower is making M&A central to its strategy, an unusual approach for an early-stage startup. Base is its second acquisition of the year; Superpower bought women's health startup Feminade in January. Peters said he expects to see more consolidation across digital health to combine point solutions tackling small slices of the market. And Superpower itself wants to connect a broad range of offerings into its app so patients can get all of their health needs met in one place. "This probably won't be our last M&A," Peters laughed. Reimagining concierge care with AI Peters launched Superpower in 2023 alongside cofounders Max Marchione and Kevin Unkrich, CTO, born from their personal experiences with a broken healthcare system. Peters, for one, was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder Crohn's disease a few years ago and spent four months in the hospital, undergoing multiple surgeries and racking up seven-figure bills. "It was a big light bulb moment for me: as a person with health challenges, no one's really coming to save you," he said. He and the Superpower team set out to create an AI-powered experience inspired by concierge medicine, which typically offers more attentive healthcare at a higher price tag, and making that style of care more widely accessible with technology. Its approach has attracted investors from Susa Ventures to Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Superpower's members take biannual lab tests, either at home or at one of Superpower's partner labs, to assess more than 100 blood biomarkers. The Superpower app then pulls in user data from patient medical records, the lab tests, and wearables, and surfaces AI-driven insights based on that data to help its members optimize their health across their nutrition, sleep, and hormones. Superpower's AI-generated action plans are reviewed by human care teams behind the scenes. Users can message their care teams to get further combined guidance from those human providers and AI. Many consumer health startups launch to focus on one or a few problems, as Ro and Hims and Hers did with conditions like erectile dysfunction and hair loss. Superpower wants to take a different approach, aiming to be comprehensive from day one, so the startup can be known for its platform rather than for any single offering, Peters said. That ambition comes with a cost: Superpower's memberships run $500 a year. While lower than what most Americans spend on healthcare in a year, that price point could put the app out of reach for many consumers. Peters said the Superpower team is thinking hard about how to make its services available to the largest group possible. Superpower launched to sell directly to consumers, but in the future, Peters said the startup may consider contracting with employers to cover the costs of its memberships for employees. "We want to build a platform that makes it easy to get the world's best healthcare to everyone at very low and accessible costs. That's the north star for us, to put a healthcare super app and AI doctor on everyone's phone," he said.

I tried Garmin's Forerunner 570 smartwatch on launch day at its HQ in Kansas City
When it comes to running watches, Garmin's Forerunner range is a bit of a legend. The series has been the trusty training sidekick for runners of all levels for years – whether that's beginners just getting going with 5Ks or those going deep into marathon training. I was at the brand's massive global HQ in Olathe, Kansas City, this week for the official launch of its brand new watches in this series, where it not only unveiled the flagship Forerunner 970, but also a fresh mid-range model, the Forerunner 570. We'd already seen a few leaks of the flagship leading up to launch, so that was kind of expected, but the 570 was a total surprise. Garmin's Forerunner 570 is now available with a retail price starting from $549.99/£459.99/AU$999. While that's not exactly budget territory, it's still well below the Forerunner 970 and Fenix range while bringing over a lot of the most useful features. Not just a cosmetic refresh, the Forerunner 570 boasts a beefier update that quietly replaces the Forerunner 265 and, in doing so, ends the 200-series moniker altogether. Something Garmin's VP of fitness and outdoor said was necessary because there was 'too much of a jump' between the 100 and 200 series watches. Taking the mid-range Forerunner into the 500s helps users understand the difference between the different series, he said, where the 100 Series is for beginners, the 500 Series for enthusiasts, and the 900 Series for professionals. It's also ditched the old 'S' naming convention, which is a relief. So what's it like on the wrist? Let's break down what's stood out during my early testing and why I reckon this will be one to watch from Garmin. Stunningly vibrant I've only had a few hours with the Forerunner 570 so far, but it was enough time to get a solid feel for the upgrades – and there are quite a few. Coming in two sizes of 42mm and 47mm, the refresh isn't just a small bump up in spec – it boasts some snazzy new colour ways never-before-seen in the series, a slew of new training tools, but – most notably – a much better screen. I've been testing out the 42mm model, which sports a 1.2-inch display with a 390×390 resolution, and the first thing I noticed was just how bright and sharp it is. I'd say it's more vibrant than anything Garmin's done before – it's super easy to read in bright sunlight, and it's simply a pleasure to look at. If you're coming from a Forerunner 255 or 265, you'll notice this improvement right away. Somewhere else Garmin has switched things up for this launch is the Forerunner's new colour options. Things are much more loud and playful this time 'round. While my test model is the straight-up black for those who want to keep things minimal, there are some fruitier options to choose from, such as a raspberry with a translucent bone/mango band, a yellow with a translucent whitestone/turquoise combo, or indigo paired with purple. They're pretty out there, and I can imagine they'll divide opinion among potential customers, but from what Garmin has said, that's the point. As Collin Murray, the company's senior industrial designer, put it: 'We're looking forward to the polarising feedback about the colours [ …] If you hate them, there's a black watch.' In classic Garmin style, the 570's design is solid, well-built in all the right places and feels like it'll stand the test of time. It's also super comfortable on the wrist, which will be good news for those who prefer long distance running. Training smarter Looks aside, the Forerunner 570 packs in plenty of proper upgrades under the hood. One of the standout additions is the new training readiness score, which checks your sleep, recovery and training load each morning and tells you whether it's a good day to push or take it easy. This is handy if, like me, you don't always trust your own judgment when planning a workout. Another new, noteworthy feature is auto-lap. This means you can load the official course into the watch during races and it'll trigger laps based on real mile or kilometre markers, not just GPS. If you've ever had your watch beep '1 mile' long before you hit the race sign, you'll know how useful that'll be. The 570 series is also bringing wrist-based running power in the form of training effect, VO2 max, and daily workouts that adapt based on how you've been running. Multi-band GPS and SatIQ are here too, giving better tracking without rinsing your battery. Speaking of, Garmin says it'll last up to 11 days in smartwatch mode. While I've not yet had a chance to test it out, that's a little lower than the 265's quoted 13 days, but since you're getting a much nicer display and some new tech in the mix, it's not a bad trade. On the smarter side of things, you've now got a speaker and mic for calls and voice control, plus music downloads (Spotify, Deezer, Amazon Music), Garmin Pay, safety features like incident detection, and wellness tracking for sleep and stress. Basically, all the useful bits. Garmin Forerunner 570 early verdict The launch of the 570 feels like the Forerunner range is coming into its own again. The brighter screen is a joy to look at during use, GPS accuracy seems top-notch, and the design feels like it has more personality than ever. You're also getting proper performance insights, smart features that should genuinely help, and the lots of new features across different areas of fitness and health that makes it more than just a running watch. Based on my early impressions here in Kansas City, the Forerunner 570 is shaping up to be one of Garmin's best ever mid-range releases.
