The travel warnings about Germany ahead of summer 2025
In the last few weeks, the US and Canada have updated their travel advice for visitors to Germany, primarily due to concerns about the possibility of terrorist attacks taking place in the country. In May, the US State Department issued a travel advisory placing Germany at Level 2: "Exercise Increased Caution." The new advice cites the persistent threat of terrorism, warning that attacks may occur with little or no warning in public spaces, including those frequented by tourists. Travellers are advised that: "Terrorist groups and lone actors remain a constant threat in Germany and Europe, attacking people in public locations with knives, small arms, rudimentary explosive devices, and vehicles...' The US has also upgraded advisories for several other European countries to Level 2, including Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and the UK. Canada, the UK, and Australia The government of Canada updated its advice for Germany soon after the US State Department did, telling travellers to "exercise a high degree of caution," because of concerns about terrorism. Advertisement Travellers are avised that: "Terrorist attacks could occur at any time. Over the past few years, several attacks have occurred in Germany. These have resulted in many injuries and deaths. Further attacks are likely." Advice from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) states that 'terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Germany. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in public places visited by foreign nationals such as restaurants, markets, shopping centres, places of worship and religious sites, including synagogues, sporting and cultural events, and crowded places and public gatherings.' The website also provides a list of incidents dating back to 2019. While the recent advisories stop short of recommending that people avoid Germany, the relevant authorities in each country urge travellers to be on their guard, monitor local news, and follow instructions from local authorities. At present, the Australian government continues to advise travellers to exercise normal safety precautions in Germany, but refers to 'multiple attacks using vehicles or knives in the last year.'

Panama and Venezuela to restore consular services in each other's countries
PANAMA CITY -- Panama and Venezuela will restore consular services in each other's countries in the coming days, Panama's Foreign Affairs Ministry said late Thursday, nearly a year after Panama suspended them following questionable Venezuelan elections that reelected President Nicolás Maduro. 'Due to the imperative need to attend to the consular issues of their citizens,' the two countries agreed to reactivate their consular services, the ministry said in a statement. The diplomatic break came July 29, 2024, when Panama pulled its diplomats from Caracas and announced it was suspending relations with Venezuela. It followed elections the day before in which the opposition declared fraud and offered evidence that Maduro had been roundly defeated. Panama President José Raúl Mulino gave his support to the Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who had visited Panama weeks earlier. Venezuela suspended flights between both countries, including those by Panamanian national carrier Copa Airlines. Flights were reestablished May 22 this year.

CBP agents discover 3,000-foot underground tunnel
June 20 (UPI) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents have discovered and closed a tunnel carved into the ground between San Diego and Tijuana that stretched more than 1,000 feet into the United States, the agency announced Thursday. The agency said the tunnel, located near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, had an exit point near a commercial warehouse. The tunnel entrance was discovered in a residential area in the Mexican border town of Tijuana, and had been concealed with freshly laid tile, CBP said. "The investigation revealed the tunnel was equipped with electrical wiring, lighting, ventilation systems and a track system designed for transporting large quantities of contraband," a CBP release said. The tunnel stretched nearly 3,000 feet, spanning the United States and Mexico border and measured nearly 4 feet high and more than 2 feet wide. It is the latest in a long series of tunnel discoveries in the Southwest. Drug and human smugglers have used clandestine, underground tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border for decades and routinely use them to move drugs and people into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has discovered more than 95 tunnels in the San Diego area alone since 1993. They are also routinely discovered in other border states, including Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. "Contractors will pour thousands of gallons of concrete into the tunnel, preventing the tunnel from use by Foreign Terrorist Organizations," the release continued.
