G7 Summit: South Korea, Japan take step toward renewed ties

Photo by Thomas Maresca/UPI | License Photo SEOUL, June 18 (UPI) -- South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba held their first bilateral summit Tuesday on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada,-marking a cautious but notable step toward resetting long-strained relations between the two neighboring countries. While bilateral ties had improved significantly under the previous South Korean administration through closer security and diplomatic coordination, this meeting was closely watched as an early signal of of how President Lee might approach the relationship going forward. Lee, whose prior remarks on Japan drew criticism from Japanese conservatives, signaled a shift toward a more pragmatic diplomatic posture during the meeting. His tone in Kananaskis suggested a willingness to move forward with Japan despite longstanding tensions. While both leaders expressed optimism about building a "future-oriented partnership," concrete outcomes may emerge as talks continue. Historical grievances, particularly unresolved matters such as wartime forced labor, continue to cast a shadow over the relationship. Lee reaffirmed South Korea's stance on these issues, emphasizing the importance of national sentiment and historical accountability. At home, his administration must also navigate a politically divided landscape, as public opinion in South Korea remains deeply sensitive to issues related to historical disputes with Japan. While the meeting carried clear symbolic weight, the path forward will depend on whether the two governments can translate goodwill into sustained diplomatic progress. The coming months will reveal whether this summit marks the continuation of recent momentum or simply a fleeting moment of diplomatic engagement.

Israel-Iran conflict: War or peace? What does Trump's 'real end' mean?

Donald Trump wants a 'real end' to the war, not a ceasefire, he says. Is it a dire threat from the US President that he will be dropping the nuclear-bunker destroying bombs from the dreaded B-2 bombers on Iran? Or is it high-stakes brinkmanship with an eye on getting the peace deal done? These are the questions floating around as the Israel-Iran war escalates and in a hugely worrying manner. Interestingly, the development comes at a time when CNN is reporting that US intelligence believed that Iran was at least three years away from a nuclear bomb. This revelation shoots Israel's rationale to initiate the attack to shreds. And also throws a big question mark over Trump's decision to let Netanyahu bomb Tehran. Trump's latest statements from Air Force One came after he had warned people in Tehran to evacuate, once again inserting himself into a conflict he has no real part in. In a post on Truth Social—now his official platform for presidential announcements—Trump had said, in his signature all caps, "IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON." This is a phrase that leaps at you again and again if you scroll through his feed. Trump has posted "IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON" so many times that it reads like a mantra he is obsessed with. Does he utter it in his sleep too? Or is it a Boy Scout promise he carries with him? You may be forgiven if you wonder. In Monday's post, Trump had also underlined that "Iran should have signed the "deal" I told them to sign".

Trump Trips On Air Force One Steps, X Rolls Out The Jokes

President Donald Trump was caught on video tripping on the stairs of Air Force One, prompting several social media jokes. President Donald Trump nearly took a tumble on airplane steps, and social media called him out along with noting that it wasn't getting as much coverage as opposed to what happened to former President Joe Biden. On Sunday (June 8), Trump was set to board Air Force One to head to Camp David in Maryland, purportedly to meet 'a lot of people, including generals… and admirals.' He also fielded questions about the protests in Los Angeles against the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and his move to deploy National Guard troops. He took more questions, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at his side before exiting to take the stairs to enter Air Force One. As he climbed the stairs, he tripped and grabbed onto the railing with his right hand before collecting himself and resuming the climb into the airplane. The entire moment was caught on C-SPAN. The moment immediately went viral online, including a close-up shot of Trump's profile at the moment he tripped and caught himself. It also led many on social media to take their shots at Trump and Republicans who had consistently mocked former President Joe Biden for his moments of difficulty entering and exiting Air Force One. 'Slipping on all them lies he's saying about Los Angeles.' a TikTok user named MammaMia wrote. Others also called out the hypocrisy they viewed within media outlets who might brush off Trump's near-tumble but still obsess over how old former President Biden was. 'Life has a funny way of showing you different prospectives after one has harshly judged another,' wrote TikTok user Emi333. Others also noted Rubio seeming to trip as he boarded the stairs for Air Force One, and commented that he might've been trying to dilute some of the potential barbs thrown at Trump. And a few social media users called out MAGA supporter Joey Mannarino's odd defense of the stumble. Trump Trips On Air Force One Steps, X Rolls Out The Jokes was originally published on 1. 'I'm much less confident': Trump on whether US can reach nuclear deal with Iran

US President Donald Trump has said that he is now 'much less confident' about reaching a nuclear deal with Iran. read more US President Donald Trump has said that he is now 'less confident' than he was two months ago about reaching a nuclear deal with Iran. Two days after he rejected the Iranian counter-proposal, Trump told New York Post's 'Pod Force One' podcast that Iran appears to be delaying talks and he is no longer confident about reaching a deal. 'I don't know. I did think so, and I'm getting more and more — less confident about it. They seem to be delaying, and I think that's a shame, but I'm less confident now than I would have been a couple of months ago. Something happened to them, but I am much less confident of a deal being made,' said Trump. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Trump administration and Iran have held five rounds of talks, but the two sides are at loggerheads over the issue of uranium enrichment, with Iran saying it should be allowed to enrich uranium for purported civilian purposes and the Trump administration maintaining that Iran would not be allowed any enrichment. Trump threatens war if no deal is reached Irrespective of Iran signing a deal, it would not be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, but it would be preferable to ensure such an outcome with a deal instead of a war, said Trump. 'Well, if they don't make a deal, they're not going to have a nuclear weapon. If they do make a deal, they're not going have a nuclear weapon, too, you know? But they're not going a have a new nuclear weapon, so it's not going to matter from that standpoint. But it would be nicer to do it without warfare, without people dying, it's so much nicer to do it,' said Trump. Earlier on Monday, Trump had warned Iran that the failure to reach a deal could lead to 'death and destruction' in Iran. Trump further told The Post that he does not see the 'same level of enthusiasm for them to make a deal'.
