Phil Foden has made feelings clear on Liverpool transfer plan as £35m deal nears
Liverpool are weighing up a move for Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi, who has previously been lauded as a key figure in the dressing room by England team-mate Phil Foden Liverpool are set to intensify their pursuit of Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi, who has been hailed as a leader by his Three Lions colleague Phil Foden. The Reds will soon be on the hunt for a new centre-back due to the likely departure of Jarell Quansah. In April, Liverpool's defence was bolstered when skipper Virgil van Dijk committed to a fresh two-year contract at Anfield. However, it appears that their central defensive options will be reduced with the impending exit of lifelong red Quansah. The 22-year-old is on the brink of completing a £35million switch to Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen. Apart from the club's captain, only Ibrahima Konate and the adaptable Joe Gomez would remain as senior choices in the centre-half position should Quansah leave. Focus could then shift to the transfer market, and Guehi has surfaced as a potential target. The 24-year-old has previously been praised by international team-mate and Manchester City star Foden as a pivotal presence in the Three Lions dressing room. The Telegraph report that with Quansah all set for an exit to Germany, Guehi, who has one year left on his current deal at Selhurst Park, has emerged as a target for the Reds. While an expected fee is unknown, the Eagles rejected a £70m bid from Tottenham in January. Foden has previously heaped praise on Liverpool target Guehi, following his impressive performances during Euro 2024, indicating that the Reds would be getting a key dressing room figure. "He has been a leader," Foden gushed on England's official YouTube channel. "I know him well from obviously playing with him and he's not fazed by anything. I feel like he has come into the team and shown his qualities." Foden hasn't been the only one to laud Guehi. Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen couldn't help but hail the defender's prowess after witnessing his Euro 2024 heroics. "He's proven in this tournament that he's very good. Left-sided centre-halves are like gold dust these days, people want them," Owen expressed to Prime Casino. "He's proven he can play at a really high level, so I've no doubt he would be capable of playing for a club like Liverpool." Since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in 2021, Guehi has become an integral part of their team, playing a key role in their historic FA Cup final victory over Foden's City in May. In the midst of speculation surrounding his future pre-Wembley final, Guehi maintained a humble stance when probed about potential transfers, but didn't completely rule a move out. "I think the most important thing is just always doing the best that I can for this football club," he stated. "I come in every day and I try to be the same. I try to work hard. And you know, this football club has given me a lot. "I'm still under contract at this football club, so my focus is always at this football club. So, you know, for me, the most important is just doing the best I can and seeing where the future holds." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Real Madrid held as Man City, Juve triumph in Club World Cup openers
Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal at the Club World Cup in new coach Xabi Alonso's first game in charge on Wednesday, after Manchester City got off to a winning start. In the late game Juventus thrashed Al Ain 5-0 in Washington after visiting US President Donald Trump at the White House. Federico Valverde had a stoppage-time penalty saved as Real were forced to settle for a point in the Group H match in Miami having taken the lead. It was a disappointing outcome for the large contingent of fans of the Spanish side in the crowd of 62,415 at Hard Rock Stadium. 'The first half wasn't as good as the second one. In the second half we had better chances, better control. For sure we have the principles to start building something, but we could have won,' Alonso told broadcaster DAZN. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach gave debuts to new signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen in defence but Real were missing Kylian Mbappe through illness. Gonzalo Garcia started in his place and the 21-year-old seized his chance as he opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark from a Rodrygo assist. Al Hilal hit back in their new coach Simone Inzaghi's first game on the bench with Ruben Neves levelling before the break from the penalty spot following a Raul Asencio foul. Real had the chance to claim victory in stoppage time after Mohammed Al Qahtani was ruled to have put his hand in the face of Fran Garcia in the box. However, Valverde's spot-kick was saved by Yassine Bounou to give the Saudi team a draw after a hugely creditable performance. RB Salzburg took the lead in Group H with a 2-1 win over Mexican outfit Pachuca in Cincinnati. The match was suspended early in the second half with the Austrian team leading 1-0 because of a storm, resuming 97 minutes later. Foden stars In Philadelphia, Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku scored firsthalf goals as Pep Guardiola's City eased to a 2-0 win against Wydad Casablanca of Morocco in Group G. City gave debuts to new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, but it was Foden who opened the scoring inside two minutes. Doku converted the second goal from a Foden corner shortly before the interval in a game played in sweaty early afternoon conditions in front of 37,446 fans at Lincoln Financial Field. The afternoon was slightly marred for City as Rico Lewis was sent off for a dangerous tackle late on, but Guardiola was satisfied with the winning start as his side look to turn the page following a difficult last season. 'It is so hot. The humidity is not easy. We had good moments, many new players. The first game in this group stage is always really, really important. I saw many, many good things,' said Guardiola, who suggested he will make sweeping changes for the next match against Al Ain in Atlanta on Sunday. 'We are going to train well in the next few days and then fresh legs for the next game to try to improve things,' Guardiola added. 'We have a lot of new players, injured players back, and step by step we will get to the right tempo.' Juve dominant Juventus, who sent a delegation to the White House earlier in the day to present Trump with a club shirt, surged to the top of Group G with a crushing triumph over UAE team Al Ain at Audi Field. On loan Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao both struck twice while Kenan Yildiz was also on target. 'I'm delighted for my goals but first and foremost for the team's win,' Conceicao, on loan from Porto, told DAZN. 'We started the game well and that's what we wanted to do, to win this opening match and now we need to kick on.' The second round of group games begins yesterday, with matches including Lionel Messi's Inter Miami against Porto and European champions Paris Saint-Germain facing Copa Libertadores winners Botafogo.

Man City's Phil Foden keen to prove doubters wrong after ‘difficult season'
Phil Foden is determined 'to prove people wrong' and bounce back from a frustrating 2024-25 campaign. The star player as Manchester City won a fourth successive Premier League title the season before last, Foden lost his spark amid an underwhelming team performance. But now feeling refreshed after a short break, the 25-year-old shone as City kicked off their challenge at the Club World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Starting off with a win 🙌 🩵 2-0 🔴 #FIFACWC — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 18, 2025 Foden opened the scoring after just two minutes against the Moroccans and then delivered the corner from which Jeremy Doku claimed the second just before the break. For the England international it was an immediate justification of his decision to sit out the recent internationals to prepare for this summer's tournament in the United States. Foden said: 'It was a difficult season. I'm not going to lie, it was not the best. 'But I got a little bit of time off, rested. New start, new me. Just looking forward to the season. 'The hunger inside me is back and I want to prove people wrong.' Having represented England at Euro 2024, Foden says he 'can't remember' the last time he had a significant spell of rest. 'Not a lot of footballers these days get much time off, so it was very important,' he said. The fastest goal in FIFA Club World Cup history from @PhilFoden 😮💨 @FIFACWC | June 14 – July 13 | Every Game | Free | | #FIFACWC | #TakeItToTheWorld — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 18, 2025 'I struggled to switch off completely but I just rested with the family, did my own thing and stuff. I needed it.' Foden, playing a deeper role than usual, was instrumental in a side featuring two debutants in Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. None of the four-strong captaincy group revealed by manager Pep Guardiola on the eve of the match – Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Ruben Dias or Erling Haaland – started, leaving goalkeeper Ederson to wear the armband. Their Moroccan opponents had some bright moments as City as tempered their game in difficult, humid conditions but the Premier League side remained in control. The only blot on their afternoon was the late sending-off of defender Rico Lewis for a sliding challenge in which he caught Samuel Obeng in the face. Foden said: 'It was very good, obviously, to start the tournament off with a win. It was massively important. 'When they had the ball I was playing as a holding midfielder, so it's something I've not been used to but I enjoyed it. I want to be in the middle as much as I can. 'I'm working on things that I can improve but I'm happy to get back in with the goals, and creating chances as well. That's what I want to do. 'We want to try and put last year behind us and get back to how we used to be. The determination is definitely there.'

Man City show squad depth in 2-0 Club World Cup win over Wydad
Phil Foden's second-minute strike sparked Manchester City's 2-0 victory over Morocco's Wydad AC in the Club World Cup opener for both teams on Wednesday in Philadelphia. The Premier League powerhouse added a goal by Jeremy Doku in the 42nd minute off a corner kick from Foden. Foden converted from inside the box for the fastest goal in Club World Cup history. His left-footed shot came after Wydad goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid blocked a shot by Savinho directly into Foden's path. It was the first goal in 20 matches for club and country for the 25-year-old English midfielder. Before the break, Foden's corner kick found Doku's right foot for a close-range goal to double the Manchester City advantage. Man City will face Al Ain on Sunday in Atlanta, while Wydad will remain in Philadelphia to face Juventus on Sunday. Manchester City will be without defender Rico Lewis, who drew a red card in the 88th minute.
