Two found guilty in 2021 shooting death of Flint man

Woman accused of firing on repo man; Michigan man accused of threats to president; other top stories Woman accused of firing on repo man; Michigan man accused of threats to president; other top stories Woman accused of firing on repo man; Michigan man accused of threats to president; other top stories Two men have been found guilty by a jury over the shooting death of another man in Flint, Michigan, the Genessee County prosecutor's office reported. William Laquan Woodward, 32, of Flint, was killed in the April 25, 2021, incident. Troy Terrance Murphy, 24 of Flint, and Malik Shandae Jones, 29 of Flint, were both found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm in connection with the case, prosecutor David Leyton reported. Murphy was also charged and convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and a second count of felony firearm. "This was a cold-blooded, senseless murder by two individuals who obviously have no value for the life of others," Leyton said after the verdict was read. According to testimony at trial and the police investigation, Woodward was driving northbound on Franklin Avenue when he was shot in the head. The suspects fired toward the vehicle from a sidewalk at the corner of Franklin and Mabel avenues. After he was shot, Woodward's vehicle continued northbound until it struck two utility poles, snapping one of them in half. Woodward was taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, where he later died. Police investigators found spent shell casings on and near the sidewalk; and observed multiple bullet holes in Woodward's vehicle. Sentencing is scheduled for July 21. Under recent rulings by the Michigan Supreme Court, individuals under 21 years old cannot be subjected to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole. Murphy was 20 years old at the time of the shooting. Leyton said his office will seek a lengthy sentence. Jones was 26 years old at the time, which subjects him to an automatic sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Lakewood Church demolition starts, steeple preserved after fire

FLINT, Texas (KETK) – Lakewood Church members started demolishing their former church building on Sunday, after the structure was irreparably damaged in a fire on April 14. Flint church holds fundraiser after devasting fire deemed total loss in April Sunday was the day of Pentecost and church members said that day was special in that it marks a new beginning for their church. 'Today is the day of Pentecost and it just so happens that it's all starting today and that's the day of fresh beginnings, the day God started a new thing on the day of Pentecost, 50 days after Jesus died. And so that is also a new thing for us, that we're starting this new building,' Lakewood Church pastor Raymond Graham said. 'God will make all things new.' While the building and most of the things inside it were unsalvageable, they were able to carefully remove the church's steeple. They plan on using that steeple for their new church building, which they hope to have open by Christmas. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Chemical company director to stand trial for 2022 Flint River oil spill

The president of Lockhart Chemical Company will stand trial in connection with an oil spill in the Flint River in June 2022. Rajinder Singh Minhas, 60, of Rochester, was bound over for trial in Genesee County on four felony charges. Minhas served as Lockhart's president, treasurer and director. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel accuses Minhas of "mismanaging and neglecting critical maintenance and upgrades" at Lockhart, which led to oil spilling into the Flint River. On June 15, 2022, more than 15,000 gallons of an oil-chemical mixture were released from Lockhart's Flint facility, which makes rust-preventative additives, and spilled into the Flint River. State officials say an investigation and chemical fingerprinting analysis revealed that the oil chemical mixture that pulled in the Flint River matched the material that left the Lockhart facility. Nessel charged Minhas in December 2024 with one count of falsely altering a public record, uttering and publishing a false or altered public record, substantial endangerment to the public and discharge of injurious substance to waters of the state. "Serious violations by businesses that endanger the health and well-being of Michigan residents and our environment cannot be tolerated," said Nessel in a statement. "I am grateful to the talented prosecutors in my office, the dedicated experts from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, Michigan State Police, the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, and detectives of the EGLE and DNR Environmental Investigation Section, who all played a significant role in advancing this case through the judicial process." Minhas is also charged with one count of false statements and omissions regarding air pollution and general violations of the air pollution law, as well as 11 other misdemeanor offenses for violating hazardous waste statutes, permits or rules. He also faces nine other misdemeanor violations of the state's Liquid Industrial Waste law for reportedly discharging industrial by-products, violating reporting requirements after a discharge, and violating other provisions related to properly labeling chemical containers, maintaining adequate records, and the storage, disposal, protection, and discharge prevention of liquid industrial waste. A pretrial date has not yet been set.

Poundland to close two more shops starting in DAYS as 200 branches are still at risk – see the full list

POUNDLAND is set to shut two more stores in days as the future of 200 remains in the balance. The bargain chain is closing the branches in Bristol and Flint on June 20 and June 21, respectively. The shop in Union Gate, Bristol, will merge with two others nearby in Horsefair and the Broadmead Shopping Centre. Shoppers and locals have shared their sadness after finding out both the sites will close for good. Commenting on the Flint closure, one said on Facebook: "One lovely shop and staff." Another posted: "Oh no I love that Poundland." Discussing the Bristol closure, one customer said: "Love that shop. Just been in there and (it's) a convenient location." Another added: "Awww no way." It comes as Poundland shuts a raft of branches across the UK. Eight stores have closed since the start of May including in Liverpool and Ipswich, while 12 in total have shut since March last year. Five more are earmarked for closure from June 11. This is the full list of stores that have closed, or are set to close in the coming months: Connswater Shopping Centre, Belfast – closed March 2024 Macclesfield – closed August, 2024 Maidenhead – closed October, 2024 Sutton Coldfield – closed October, 2024 Clapham Junction Station, London – closed May 2 Belle Vale Shopping Centre, Liverpool – closed May 6 St George's Centre, Gravesend – closed May 8 Southwark Park Road – closed May 14 Copdock Mill Interchange, Ipswich – closed May 20 Brackla, Wales – closed May 24 Chiswick High Road – closed May 28 Filton Abbeywood – closed May 31 Surrey Quays – closing June 11 Union Gate, Bristol - closing June 20 Flint - closing June 21 Cowes, Isle of Wight – closing July (exact date tbc) Newquay, August 1 POUNDLAND BEST BUYS It comes with hundreds of Poundland stores and thousands of jobs at risk as part of a rescue deal. What is happening with Poundland? The owner of Poundland, Pepco, is reportedly eyeing up a sale of its UK retail arm for £1, with up to 200 shops potentially closing as part of the process. Bidding for the business started last month, with Gordon Brothers, the ex-owner of Laura Ashley, and Homebase owner Hilco reported to be in a two way race. A decision on who the preferred bidder is could be announced in the coming days. Pepco said it expects the sale of Poundland in the UK to complete by September. In April, it was reported advisory firm Teneo was drafted in to oversee the sale of the UK business. It comes after Pepco said it was looking at"all strategic options" to separate Poundland from its brand. Pepco previously warned that upcoming hikes to employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) and national minimum wage would significantly add to its costs. Late last year, it was revealed that profits at Poundland also tumbled by £641million in the year to September, with bosses again blaming slow sales amid a poor outlook thanks to measures set out by Reeves. A spokesperson also said the huge loss was "due to a non-cash impairment at Poundland that relates to the acquisition of the UK chain in 2016". RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020." .
