Lithium-ion battery blamed for small explosion in Fond du Lac home
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – A lithium-ion battery is being blamed for a small explosion inside a Fond du Lac residence late Wednesday night, prompting a reminder about battery safety from local fire officials. According to Fond du Lac Fire & Rescue, crews were dispatched shortly after 11:30 p.m. for a report of an explosion in the living room of a home. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that a lithium-ion battery had been charging in the living room and experienced a thermal runaway, leading to a small explosion. Boat catches fire at Manitowoc Marina; no injuries reported The fire was extinguished by the residents before crews arrived. Firefighters confirmed that the incident did not extend beyond the immediate area, though it did cause damage to the floor and wall. No injuries were reported. Lithium-ion batteries power a wide range of everyday devices, including smartphones, laptops, e-bikes, and power tools. As demand increases, fire officials warn of the growing presence of cheaply made or uncertified batteries and chargers that often fail to meet critical safety standards. Ahead of extreme heat in Wisconsin, WisDOT warns of pavement buckling conditions Fond du Lac Fire & Rescue offered the following battery safety tips: Use only batteries and chargers that are UL listed (e.g., UL 1642, UL 2054, UL 62133, UL 2271) Purchase products from reputable manufacturers and retailers Avoid mixing components such as third-party chargers with unverified batteries Regularly inspect batteries for signs of damage, swelling, or overheating Never charge batteries unattended or overnight The department thanked the community for its cooperation and urged continued caution when using and charging lithium-ion batteries. Shark bites 12-year-old girl off Hilton Head Island days after 9-year-old almost lost hand in Florida attack
A 12-year-old girl was airlifted from South Carolina's Hilton Head Island after she was bitten by a shark, authorities said. The girl was bitten in the waters off Hilton Head's Sea Pines on Tuesday, authorities said. Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue said in a statement she had sustained "a leg injury consistent with lacerations typically associated with a shark bite." "She has lost good amount of blood so far," a first responder said in dispatch audio obtained by CBS News. The preteen, who has not been identified, received on-scene treatment from Shore Beach Services and Fire Rescue personnel, then was airlifted to nearby Savannah, Georgia, for medical attention. Her injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said. It's the second time a child has sustained a shark bite in recent days. Leah Lendel, 9, nearly lost her hand after being bitten by a shark near Boca Grande on Florida's west coast on June 11. Witnesses at the scene said she was snorkeling when the incident occurred. Leah was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where she underwent intensive surgeries to reattach her hand. She spent several days in the intensive care unit. "I didn't see anything. I was just snorkeling," Leah said in a news briefing Thursday. "I went up to breathe. And then, something hard bit me and tried to take me away." "Then I pick up my hand and is all in blood," Leah added. "I start screaming with my mom." Beachgoers said the attacks on the two young girls are an unnerving start to the summer. "It's kind of nerve-racking, a little bit," Hilton Head visitor Naomi Vereb told CBS affiliate WTOC. Unprovoked shark attacks are rare, but they do happen, researchers say. In 2024, researchers from the International Shark Attack File, a database run by the Florida Museum of Natural History and the University of Florida, investigated 88 alleged shark-human interactions around the world. They confirmed 71 incidents involved shark bites. Of those attacks, 47 were unprovoked, the researchers found. Four of the unprovoked attacks were fatal.

Grepps wins preliminary vote for Augusta supervisors seat in Republican primary
Stephen Grepps Sr. has preliminarily won the Republican primary for the Beverley Manor seat on the Augusta County Board of Supervisors. "I'm very, very excited,' said Grepps in reaction to the victory. 'I had a great team working with me, and I had, with my family, a great support network. I started this journey Feb. 2 of this year and I've knocked on over a thousand doors. I spoke to a thousand people. I'm grateful for the people, the voters of the Beverley Manor District and the people in the county in general, that supported me.' The preliminary totals came to 171 votes for Stephen Grepps Sr. and 157 votes for Justin Dimitt. This includes 73 early voting and 23 mail in ballots for Grepps, then 66 early voting and 8 mail in ballots for Dimitt. Only 4% of the 7,536 voters registered for the Beverley Manor District voted in the primary. The race next turns to the general election, though, according to the Virginia Department of Elections, no Democrats filed to run against the Republican primary victor. Grepps said he 'wouldn't be surprised' if a write in candidate decided to jump in the race, and he's prepared to continue to campaign if needed. Grepps ran on public transparency and said this would be his top priority when he gets into office. One of the biggest topics at the board of supervisors is the ongoing discussions around the Churchville fire station and the Augusta County Fire/Rescue hub model. Grepps has been a firefighting volunteer for 44 years, and wants to keep the system working. 'The career and volunteers, we want to get them all together on the same team like we were years ago,' Grepps said. 'When I moved here in 1992, there was 863 volunteers, active volunteers. It's dwindled down to maybe 200. We're the second largest county in the state, so, I want the guys and girls on both sides … to be able to come to us, let us know what we can do to.' The preliminary primary results are still unofficial results and need to be certified before the election comes to a close.
