Fisherman missing in boat fire found drowned with extensive burns near Kuala Kurau

IPOH, June 18 — A fisherman who went missing in a boat fire yesterday was found drowned with extensive burn injuries, about 4.8 nautical miles west of Tanjung Piandang, Kuala Kurau, this morning. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Kuala Kurau zone director Maritime Commander Mohd Hairil Othman said its operations centre was alerted at about 8am by a local fisherman who discovered the body floating at sea. 'The victim had extensive burn injuries. His remains were brought to the Tanjung Piandang jetty and handed over to the police for further action,' he said in a statement tonight. Following the discovery, the search and rescue operation involving MMEA, the Fire and Rescue Department, and the local fishing community was officially called off. In the incident at about 4am yesterday, the boat carrying three fishermen caught fire from the malfunctioning engine of the boat about 8.6 nautical miles east of Tanjung Piandang. All three fishermen jumped overboard to save themselves, but only two were rescued. The boat owner, identified as Cheah Chai Pun, 33, was reported missing. Meanwhile, Mohd Hairil reminded the maritime community to prioritise safety at sea, particularly by wearing life jackets at all times. 'In the event of an emergency, call the emergency line 999 or WhatsApp at 011-3525 9919 or contact the Kuala Kurau Maritime Zone Office at 05-727 9919 for immediate assistance,' he said. — Bernama

Penang flash flood trigger Bomba response as foothill rains flood four homes in Balik Pulau

BALIK PULAU, June 17 — Four houses at Jalan Kampung Air Putih, here, were inundated due to a flash flood following heavy rain yesterday afternoon. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of Operations John Sagun Francis said two fire engines with six personnel from the Balik Pulau Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving an emergency call at 3.53 pm. He said the heavy rain caused the road to be flooded to a depth of about 0.3 metres and overflowed into nearby homes. 'The flash flood was caused by heavy rain, compounded by its location at the foothill, which led to drains overflowing onto the road and subsequently entering four houses,' he said in a statement yesterday. John said monitoring at the site showed that the situation was under control, with water levels gradually receding and that the operation ended at 6.33 pm. Apart from Balik Pulau, many parts of Penang were also affected by heavy rain, with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issuing a thunderstorm, heavy rain, and strong wind warning today. — Bernama
