Murtagh wins silver while McCarthy and Pazzaia claim bronze at the European Rowing Championships

Fiona Murtagh has won silver in the Women's Single Sculls at the European Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria with Fintan McCarthy and Konan Pazzaia claiming bronze in the A final of the Men's Double Sculls. Murtagh claimed silver in a time of 7:21.11 in mixed conditions with a headwind at the start and a tailwind over the final 600 metres. She showed composure and consistency to almost match her heat time exactly. McCarthy and Pazzaia won Ireland's first medal of the regatta when the duo secured broze in the Men's Double Sculls. The pair were in medal contention throughout the race holding off a strong challenge in what was a tightly contested race. This marks McCarthy's first international medal in an openweight boat and it is a first senior championship medal for Pazzaia. Jake McCarthy finished fourth in the A final of the Lightweight Men's Single Sculls and closed with the fastest 500m of the race in a time of 7:01.45. In the A final of the Lightweight Women's Single Sculls Izzy Clements finished fourth on her senior debut which was an excellent result after holding a top three position for much of the race. Mags Cremin and Zoe Hyde finished fourth in their A final of the Women's Double Sculls posting a time of 6:55.73 which was just 3.77 seconds off a podium finish in what was a fast and competitive race. The newly formed crew of Claire Feerick, Natalie Long, Aisling Hayes and Alison Bergin finished fourth in the B final of the Women's Quadruple Sculls with a time of 6:28.50 weehich was a significant improvement from their heat. The Men's Quadruple Sculls of Andrew Sheehan, Adam Murphy, Ronan Byrne and Philip Doyle finished fifth in their B final delivering an assured and consistent campaign. Ross Corrigan and Daire Lynch finished third in their B final in the Men's pair with a time of 6:26.50. Michelle Carpenter, CEO of Rowing Ireland, was delighted with the team's performance. "It was an honour to be on the ground in Plovdiv supporting our athletes at the 2025 European Rowing Championships. Across the board, we saw determination, resilience, and world-class performances from our crews. Murtagh, who won Olympic bronze in Tokyo, came in behind Britan's Fiona Henry and head of Dane Frida Sanggaard Nielsen. At the halfway point, Murtagh was in second place and within striking distance of Henry, but the Britain gradually began to pull away. IRELAND WILL HAVE a brilliant five boats going for gold at the European Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, this weekend after Fintan McCarthy and Konan Pazzaia, and Fiona Murtagh, all safely came through Friday's semi-finals. Double Olympic lightweight champion McCarthy, who is partnered this week by Pazzaia in the absence of Paul O'Donovan, will contest his first heavyweight final in the men's double sculls on Saturday morning. Advertisement McCarthy and Pazzaia finished second in their semi-final behind medal favourites Andrei Cornea and Florian Enache of Romania, and will be firmly in the hunt for a medal in the final (10.40am). In the women's single sculls, Fiona Murtagh underlined her medal prospects as she won her semi-final. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist will be in lane four for Sunday's final at 10.13am. Fiona Murtagh makes a splash at European Rowing Championships

Fiona Murtagh and the duo of Fintan McCarthy and Konan Pazzaia will vie for medals at the European Rowing Championships in Bulgaria this weekend after advancing to the finals of their respective events. Murtagh, who has made the switch from sweep to single sculls, stormed to victory in her semi-final in Plovdiv in seven minutes 18.97 seconds, with Greece's Evangelia Anastasiadou her nearest pursuer almost two second in arrears and Benthe Boonstra of the Netherlands third. In Sunday's final (10.13am Irish time), Murtagh has strong claims of securing a silver medal from lane four, but Britain's Lauren Henry is in imperious form and looks almost impossible to beat after setting a European record in the heats and winning her own semi-final in 7:12.13. McCarthy and Pazzaia progressed to Saturday's final (10.40am Irish time) of the double sculls in 6:05.78, with Romania's Olympic champions Andrei Cornea and Marian Enache lowering the European Championships record they set in the heats by clocking 6:00.79. Italy's Niels Torre and Gabriel Soares finished third. B finals beckon for the men's pair of Daire Lynch and Ross Corrigan, and the quadruple sculls crew of Philip Doyle, Ronan Byrne, Adam Murphy and Andrew Sheehan after both boats finished fifth in their semi-finals.
