Flamengo Scores 3 Second-Half Goals to Stun Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup

Danilo scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute, and Flamengo scored three second-half goals to move atop its group at the Club World Cup with a 3–1 victory over Chelsea on Friday. Both teams went into the match with three points atop Group D with opening match wins. Flamengo will have to wait to see the results of the late match between LAFC and Esperance to see if it has secured a spot in the knockout round. For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app. Pedro Neto gave Chelsea the early lead. The ball bounced off a Flamengo defender, and Neto gained control charging toward the goal before putting it away in the 13th minute. Flamengo drew even in the 62nd on Bruno Henriques' goal on a tap-in in front of the goal. Moments later, the Brazilian giants took the lead off a corner with Danilo's goal. Wallace Yan all but put the game out of reach for the Blues with a goal in the 83rd. The Blues – the 2021 Club World Cup winner – defeated LAFC 2–0 in their opening match in Atlanta. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández scored. Luiz Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored to lead Flamengo over Esperance 2–0. Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luís currently coaches Flamengo, while former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho made his debut for Flamengo against Esperance. Key Moment Down just 2–1, Chelsea still had a chance, but Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th with a straight red just four minutes after replacing Liam Delap, who got his first start for Chelsea after making his debut for the Blues in the tournament opener. Takeaways Flamengo is in good position to move on to the round of 16, but they need a win or a tie by Esperance later on Friday to secure it. Chelsea plays Esperance on Tuesday in Philadelphia, while Flamengo plays LAFC in Orlando.

Flamengo stun Chelsea with comeback victory at Club World Cup as Jackson sees red

After all the hype about Cole Palmer taking the No 10 shirt, it was hard to understand why Enzo Maresca seemed so determined to shackle his best player as Chelsea's hopes of reaching the knockout phase of the Club World Cup as winners of Group D were dented by a second-half implosion in which Nicolas Jackson picked up a rash red card for the second time in his past four appearances. How Flamengo made light of the financial gap. The leaders of the Brazilian league were better and more motivated than their English opponents. Chelsea were dire, with Maresca's tactics weirdly reactive. The Italian compromised Palmer by moving him to the right and defeat leaves Chelsea, who collapsed after taking an early lead, at risk of facing Bayern Munich if they reach the last 16. None of the South American teams have been pushovers so far. This tournament has genuine meaning for them and it was no surprise that this felt like a home game for Flamengo, whose fans arrived at Lincoln Financial Field ready to make it theirs for the afternoon. Flamengo, who are coached by the former Chelsea left-back Filipe Luís, were lively and combative from the start. Their press was high, they had plenty of speed on the flanks and anyone trying to work out why they average the highest possession in the Brazilian league only had to look at Jorginho rolling back the years against his old side, the Italian exuding calm as he dropped back to receive the ball and shift the tempo with sudden switches of play and quick passes over the top. Advertisement Chelsea had no control. Instead they suffered for long spells. There was a cautious lineup from Maresca, who brought Malo Gusto in at right-back, moved Reece James into midfield and pushed Palmer to the right flank, and there was little flow to the Premier League side's football. Maresca's system did not work. It forced Chelsea into containment mode and restricted their attacking talents. Palmer looked out of sorts on the wing, Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández both picked up early bookings for late tackles and although Liam Delap had a sight of goal in the fifth minute the striker found it difficult to make an impact on his full debut. Flamengo were the more aggressive side. Gerson was a dynamo in midfield and the only question was whether they could make their dominance count. They were too rushed in the final third at first and fell behind when Danilo's failure to deal with a speculative punt from James allowed Pedro Neto to steal possession, race through on goal and slip a low finish past Agustín Rossi. Yet Chelsea remained short of purpose and cohesion. Flamengo kept pressing and they almost equalised through Gerson, only for Levi Colwill to clear the midfielder's volley off the line. Advertisement The warning signs were obvious long before the game turned in the 62nd minute. Flamengo made a strong start to the second half, whereas Chelsea remained diffident and sluggish. Gerson and Gonzalo Plata both had chances to punish some awful defending. Plata then found space in the area but saw his rising shot tipped over by Robert Sánchez, who at least compensates for his shaky distribution with sharp reflexes. Attention shifted to the benches. Maresca was passive but Luís was proactive with his substitutions. Bruno Henrique came on for Giorgian de Arrascaeta in the 56th minute and soon made his mark. Chelsea were caught square when Gerson chipped a diagonal ball over Gusto, Plata headed across goal and Bruno Henrique ghosted behind Marc Cucurella to convert at the far post. There was still no response from Chelsea. The Flamengo fans erupted and they were bouncing again when Danilo made it 2-1 in the 65th minute, darting to the near post to head a corner past Sánchez. Humiliation beckoned. Chelsea duly lost their heads in the heat. Jackson, who had come on for Delap in between the Flamengo goals, proceeded to disgrace himself. The indiscipline was staggering when the striker took a heavy touch and planted his studs into Ayrton Lucas's shins, leaving his side to play out the closing stages with 10 men. Advertisement Jackson's latest indiscretion will raise further questions over his future. He was similarly foolish when he was sent off against Newcastle last month. Maresca, though, was just as unimpressive. He succeeded in neutering Palmer and then took him off when Chelsea needed a goal. The game was over a minute later. There was joy for Flamengo when another substitute, Wallace Yan, took advantage of another ricochet and fired past Sánchez. Chelsea still have work to do when they face Espérance Tunis in their final group game.

The Chelsea connections powering Flamengo at Club World Cup

You might not realise that there is a Chelsea flavour at the Maracanã these days. And it will be highlighted at the Club World Cup as the English side face Flamengo in Philadelphia. José Boto is the Portuguese sporting director responsible for the reunions at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday. He moved to Flamengo in Brazil to work with Filipe Luís in the former Chelsea left-back's first managerial post, at the Rio de Janeiro club. One of Boto's important signings has been Jorginho and there could have been even more, too, after talks with Joao Felix about becoming the next European player to head for South America this summer. 'We talked with Joao and it was very clear to us it was not in his mindset at this moment to come to South America to play, to come to Brazil,' says Boto. 'We finished the talks with all respect as we felt it was not his project to come to Brazil to play.' The project Boto is overseeing at the famous Maracanã Stadium, home of Flamengo, is one of the intriguing sub-plots at Fifa's expanded club tournament. He was head of scouting at Benfica when Angel Di Maria, David Luiz and Nemanja Matic came through. He then moved to Shakhtar Donetsk and recruited Roberto De Zerbi from Italian club Sassuolo. Flamengo appointed him in December and he sees similarities between his head coach Filipe Luís and De Zerbi. Flamengo have European experience running through their team, with ex-Manchester City full-back Danilo arriving in January, Alex Sandro from Juventus and now Jorginho, who played in the 2021 Champions League triumph that earned Chelsea a place at this summer's tournament. 'The signing of Jorginho was not because of the tournament,' Boto said. 'If we could have found a way to sign him before the Club World Cup, that was perfect. And we did. But it was not the main goal. 'What he can bring to us is like Danilo from Juventus and Alex Sandro from Juventus – another vision of football, of how to face training and the games with the European mentality they can bring to our club. He is the perfect midfielder for our model. 'The rhythm that we play in Brazil is different to England, it is more low. For the standard of the Brazilian league, he is a big, big signing.' Jorginho made his Flamengo debut in their opening Group D win over ES Tunis, with the clash against Chelsea effectively deciding who will avoid playing Bayern Munich in the first knockout round. Getting a result at the Philadelphia Eagles' 67,594-seat arena would showcase some of the talent Boto has on his hands. Flamengo's young wing-back Wesley França, 21, has been watched by City as they scout right-backs. Boto also believes their head coach Filipe Luís, who won the title at Stamford Bridge, will end up in Europe and change attitudes towards Brazilian coaches in the Premier League, which are based on Luiz Felipe Scolari's brief spell at Chelsea. 'He still has the long hair he had at Chelsea!' said Boto of his head coach. 'He only has less than a year as a coach in professional football. But since I arrived, we have just been winning. Never has a team scored so many goals. 'He is a workaholic, someone who prepared in the last years of his career as a player to be a coach. He wants to know everything about coaches, in his mind he has a clear way of how we want to play with the football, we dominate, we have the ball. 'It is not exactly the same but an example would be De Zerbi, which you saw in Brighton. To have the ball, control the ball and attack every time. It is a clear idea. That was a surprise to me, to have a first-team coach with such clear ideas and then to coach that idea. He has the same profile as De Zerbi, working 24 hours connecting football and training. We will speak at 11pm or midnight about football. 'I have no doubts in saying that he will be one of the top coaches in three or four years in Europe. For me, he will be the guy that changes the way Europeans look at Brazilian coaches. If you remember the last Brazilian coach in England was Scolari and was not so brilliant at Chelsea. 'But even in Europe, maybe [Vanderlei] Luxemburgo at Real Madrid. But there are not so many coaches, especially in big leagues. Thiago Motta spent his whole career away from Brazil. Filipe is a guy to make Europe look at Brazilian coaches in a different way.' Boto is talking to Telegraph Sport as he drives into the Flamengo training ground. It is breakfast time, and the sun is out, already it is 26 degrees. The heat could level the playing field at Fifa's expanded club tournament, with European teams used to playing in the harsh winter. Boto's work also took him to PAOK in Greece, where he scouted Viktor Gyokeres at Coventry City before he became one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe. 'A striker was proposed to us from Coventry, at that time not playing so much,' he said. 'We analysed the player and tried to bring the player but it was not consensual between us and the technical director and the coach. That player was Gyokeres. 'Then that season he started to play at Coventry and scored a lot of tough goals and then Sporting came for €20 million. At that time Coventry didn't see him as an important player and wanted to sell him and we scouted him and liked him.' At Flamengo, there will be inevitable links with European players, given Boto's background. One player who is talked about by fans is Lucas Paquetá, who left the club in 2019 and now has a Football Association charge hanging over him for allegedly spot-fixing by deliberately earning yellow cards in four Premier League games. 'Everyone speaks about his situation,' Boto said. 'It is something in Brazil where not-so-well-known players have had problems. But the people are always talking about him [Paquetá] and dreaming about him coming to Flamengo. For us it was not an option as we don't know what will happen. But the truth is people love him here.'
