Photo: AFP/File Australia could shake up their batting after crashing to South Africa in the World Test Championship final, with captain Pat Cummins saying a "reset" was needed ahead of three Tests in the West Indies and a home Ashes series. The five-wicket defeat at Lord's on Saturday, after posting a 74-run first-innings lead, has renewed focus on Australia's top order which has struggled since opener David Warner retired 17 months ago. The elevation of out-of-form Marnus Labuschagne as Usman Khawaja's fifth opening partner since Warner bowed out did not work, while the experiment of Cameron Green at three flopped. The 38-year-old Khawaja is also under the microscope, scoring nought and six as his lean spell against pace continued. Green made four in the first innings and lasted only two balls before departing for a duck in the second as the new-look top three managed a total of 49 runs in the match. Australia's batting woes were laid bare, particularly in the second innings, when only a plucky unbeaten fifty from fast-bowler Mitchell Starc and 43 from wicketkeeper Alex Carey gave the Proteas a tough chase. "There's probably quite a few people in the line-up that wish they could have done a little bit more," Cummins told reporters. "The top three was an obvious one in this game." Fresh start With the 2027 WTC cycle kicking off when Australia travel to the West Indies for a three-Test series beginning in Barbados on June 25, the skipper admitted "it does feel like a little bit of a fresh start". "We've got a couple of weeks before the first Test in the Windies, so we'll sit down and have a bit of a think after we digest this game," he said. "But for me, I think a new WTC cycle in some ways does feel like a bit of a reset. "It's probably more for the selectors and for me to sit down and map it ahead." Compounding Australia's woes, veteran Steve Smith, who hit a majestic first innings' 66, is doubtful for the first West Indies Test after dislocating his finger. If he is ruled out, gung-ho teenager Sam Konstas, who played two Tests against India last summer before being dropped, could slot back in alongside Khawaja. That would allow Labuschagne to drop back to three, should he survive the axe after averaging just 25.63 in Tests during the 2024/25 season. There is also the option of Josh Inglis, who was in the WTC squad, as an opener. Australian media made it clear that change was needed, with The Australian newspaper calling the defeat a "wake-up call" with the five-Test Ashes series against England beginning in November. "Father Time is undefeated and selectors must now be decisive over key calls for the future," it said. Cummins acknowledged all cards were on the table with only five months to go until the first Ashes Test in Perth beginning on November 20. "Coming to this match, you've got guys like Sam Konstas and Scotty Boland and Josh Inglis, all those guys were right on the fringes," he said. "So I think again, after this Test match, everyone gets thrown back into the conversation."

India launches inspection of Boeing 787s after Air India crash
STORY: India's government is urgently inspecting all Boeing 787s, after a devastating Air India crash that claimed at least 270 lives this week. That's according to aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu, who led a moment of silence for those who died in the disaster at a press conference on Saturday. He added that the authorities were investigating all possible causes. On Friday, the aviation regulator ordered Air India to conduct additional maintenance checks on its Boeing 787-8 and 9 aircraft equipped with GEnx engines. :: File Air India operates 33 Boeing 787s, and rival airline IndiGo has one, according to data from Flightradar24. The planes have not been grounded. But a source on Friday told Reuters the Indian government was considering that as an option. Air India and the Indian government are looking at several aspects of the crash, including issues linked to its engine thrust, flaps, and why the landing gear remained open as the plane took off and then came down. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for Britain's Gatwick Airport with 242 people on board began losing height seconds after take-off on Thursday. It then erupted in a fireball as it hit buildings below, in what has been the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade. Only one of the passengers and crew onboard survived, while others were killed as the plane struck a medical college's hostel as it came down. The crisis has cast a shadow on Air India, which has for years struggled to rebuild its reputation and revamp its fleet. Meanwhile, anxious family members await news of their loved ones, with some hoping to collect the bodies of those killed in the crash. Some say they have been told by authorities that it will take 72 hours for DNA profiling. Imtiaz Syed Ali says his brother was on the flight when it crashed. He says he came to give a DNA sample to help identify those who died, but added he does not trust the process. "I have this mental urge to see the body of my deceased brother," he says. "That is when I will accept that this is my brother and he is dead." Most bodies in the crash were badly charred, and authorities say they are using dental samples to run identification checks.

Create Account John Fitzgerald Hanson, 61, received a three-drug lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester and was pronounced dead at 10:11 a.m., prison officials said. Hanson was sentenced to die after he was convicted of carjacking, kidnapping and killing a Tulsa woman in 1999. Hanson, whose name in some federal court records is George John Hanson, had been serving a life sentence in federal prison in Louisiana for several unrelated federal convictions. Federal officials transferred him to Oklahoma custody in March to follow through on President Donald Trump's sweeping executive order to more actively support the death penalty. Hanson's attorneys argued in a last-minute appeal that he did not receive a fair clemency hearing last month, claiming that one of the board members who denied him clemency was biased because he worked for the Tulsa County District Attorney's Office when Hanson was prosecuted. Prosecutors alleged Hanson and accomplice, Victor Miller, kidnapped Mary Bowles from a Tulsa shopping mall. Prosecutors alleged the pair drove Bowles to a gravel pit near Owasso, where Miller shot and killed property owner Jerald Thurman. The two then drove Bowles a short distance away, where Hanson shot and killed Bowles, according to prosecutors. Miller received a no-parole life prison sentence for his role in the crimes. During last month's clemency hearing, Hanson expressed remorse for his involvement in the crimes and apologized to the victims' families. 'I'm not an evil person,' Hanson said via a video link from the prison. 'I was caught in a situation I couldn't control. I can't change the past, but I would if I could.' Hanson's attorneys acknowledged he participated in the kidnapping and carjacking, but said there was no definitive evidence that he shot and killed Bowles. They painted Hanson as a troubled youth with autism and who was controlled and manipulated by the domineering Miller. KAP flags lower annual earnings ahead amid challenging trading conditions

Earnings per share (eps) is expected to decrease by more than 30% for 2025, which is a decrease of at least 13.1 cents per share from 43.8 cents the prior comparative period. In an update guidance on the company's operational performance for 11 months of the 2025 financial year up to May 31, 2025, compared with the prior comparative period, KAP said trading conditions have remained challenging, with sentiment further dampened by the uncertainty created by the delay in the approval of the national budget, the resultant instability of the Government of National Unity and the potential negative effects of the US's tariff war. Additionally, April was a particularly weak month due to the limited trading days. In this context, the group delivered a modest growth in revenue, a reduction in Ebitda, a decline in operating profit and meaningfully lower earnings during the period. KAP said it continues to make progress with the execution of its strategy, to realise value from the major capital projects; improve the financial performance of underperforming businesses, mostly Unitrans; and the reduction of net debt. Divisional performance: PG Bison successfully started and ramped up its new R2 billion MDF (Medium-density fiberboard) line in Mkhondo in the first half of 2025. Revenue was higher due to a 90% increase in MDF domestic and export sales volumes, primarily attributable to the higher MDF production. Particleboard sales volumes were stable. Balance sheet KAP said it has completed a major investment cycle, with all projects commissioned and operational. "The only remaining major capital commitment relates to improving the average fleet age of Unitrans' vehicles. This catch- up capital expenditure will be phased over three to five years and we therefore do not expect it to have a major impact in any single year," it said. "We invested in future growth, of which PG Bison's new MDF line is the largest and most recent investment. The line resulted in a 33% increase in the division's total production capacity and offers compelling growth opportunities for the group, it said. KAP said it was making good progress in addressing areas of underperformance, the most material of which relates to Unitrans, where an operating profit of R700 million is targeted over the medium term. Reducing net debt is also a priority.
