Professor Suman Chakraborty appointed IIT Kharagpur director
Chakraborty was recently awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by the UNESCO for his seminal work in micro and nanoscale flows, enabling innovations in diagnostic technologies and improving rural livelihoods and healthcare access for the marginalised populations. Chakraborty, who will take over from the current acting director professor Amit Patra, will be in office for a period of five years with effect from the date of taking charge or till attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. Kolkata, Jun 19 (PTI) Suman Chakraborty, the Institute Chair Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur, and Sir J C Bose National Fellow of the Department of Science and Technology, has been appointed the director of IIT Kharagpur, the institute said in a statement on Friday night. Chakraborty was featured in the list of top 100 researchers across all disciplines in Asia in 2023. A recipient of the National Award for Teachers 2023, a laureate of Infosys Prize-2022 and the winner of the coveted Santi Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize, Chakraborty has been elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the ASME, Alexander von Humboldt, and all the Indian National Academies of Science and Engineering, the institute said. Chakraborty, who has been appointed as a full-time director by the Centre, joined IIT Kharagpur in 2002 as an assistant professor and has been a senior professor since 2008. On January 1, IIT BHU (Varanasi) director Amit Patra took over as the acting director of IIT Kharagpur, after the end of term of V K Tewari, who was the institute's director till December 31, 2024. WASHINGTON, June 17, 2025 /CNW/ -- The Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) is leading a robust and candid panel discussion on Wednesday alongside the Global Forum on Nicotine in Warsaw, Poland. Consumer advocates will issue a resounding call for urgent reform of the taxpayer-funded World Health Organization (WHO) and its tobacco control arm, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The panel argues that years of politicized policymaking, opaque governance, and disregard for consumer perspectives have rendered the FCTC increasingly ineffective and out of touch with scientific and social realities. Calls for reform of international health institutions have intensified in recent years, with the WHO's pandemic response drawing widespread criticism and renewed scrutiny of its broader governance failures. The FCTC has not been immune. With smoking rates not declining in many regions and growing disillusionment about the Convention's approach, panellists say it's time for a serious reset. Maria Papaioannoy of Rights 4 Vapers, Canada, emphasizes that "it's critical to counter the misinformation about safer nicotine products, especially when it comes from those in power. Consumers have voices, and it's time they were heard at FCTC COP11." Tom Gleeson, Trustee of New Nicotine Alliance Ireland, echoes the call for evidence-based reform. "The FCTC hasn't adapted since 2005 to account for safer nicotine products," he said. "Instead, it pats itself on the back for reducing percentages while the number of smokers stays the same. With the basic settings, you can make light, medium, or dark coffees and cold brew. If you want to take it further, you can use the Fellow app to make custom profiles tailored to your coffee beans of choice. I haven't taken it this far yet, but it's nice to know the customization is available if I ever want to explore further. AUA Announces 2025-2026 H. Logan Holtgrewe Legislative Fellow BALTIMORE, June 12, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Urological Association (AUA) today announced that Christine Van Horn, MD, MS, has been named the 2025-2026 H. Logan Holtgrewe Legislative Fellow. This fellowship aims to equip residents, fellows, and early career urologists with a foundational understanding of the legislative processes that shape health policy. As the Holtgrewe Fellow, Dr. Van Horn will engage in a multi-week fellowship within a congressional office in Washington, DC. During this time, she will actively contribute to key AUA advocacy efforts, including the Annual Urology Advocacy Summit and meetings of the AUA's Public Policy Council and Federal Advocacy Committee. Additionally, she will participate in the Executive Leadership Program in Health Policy & Management at Brandeis University. "I'm very excited about the opportunities the Holtgrewe Fellowship provides, especially in learning more about the legislative process,' said Dr. Van Horn.
