'Not the first time': Marcos says he and his family often use MRT-3

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Friday said that he and his family often ride the MRT-3 together and that his ride last June 1 was "not the first time." ''First of all, hindi 'to first time na sumakay ako ng MRT, madalas namin gamitin 'yung MRT dahil sa traffic. Mas mabilis eh. Kami... pamilya ko, mga kaibigan ko. Hindi practical matraffic, magdadalawang oras ka hanggang Cubao,'' Marcos said in the BBM Podcast. (First of all, it was not my first time to ride the MRT. We often use the MRT because of the traffic. It's faster. I, my family, and my friends ride the MRT. The traffic is not practical, it's often two hours to get to Cubao.) He also shared that he often talks to commuters, and they told him about the usual crowded situation inside the train, adding that he personally experienced the challenge of commuting using the MRT-3. ''Naramdaman ko 'yan, minsan sumakay kami ng MRT, talagang pag nakapasok ka na, basta't 'yung kamay mo nandito, hindi mo na magagalaw 'yun. Nakadikit ka na dito. Kinakausap ko mga pasahero, 'Sir, ganyan talaga 'yan araw-araw,''' the President added. (I experienced that, one time we used the MRT and once you enter and place your hands here, you can no longer move. I often talk to passengers, and they tell me the situation is like that every day.) Marcos earlier announced the Family/Pamilya Pass 1+3 program, which was made in honor of Family Day and to celebrate Filipino families. In this program, families or barkadas of four members only need to pay for one passenger to ride the MRT-3, LRT-2 and LRT-1 every Sunday starting on June 1, 2025. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation has announced the increased discount for all students from 20% to 50% for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 starting Friday. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Survivors invited to view excavation works at site of former mother and baby home in Tuam

SURVIVORS and family members connected to a mother and baby home in Tuam which is currently being excavated have been invited to view the works at the site. Some 796 children are believed to be buried in a septic tank at the former home in Co. Galway while it was in operation under the Bon Secours sisters from 1925 t0 1961. Pre-excavation work has begun at the site of the former mother and baby home in Tuam (Pic: Andrew Downes, xposure) In 2010 local amateur historian Catherine Corless uncovered the mass grave after finding death certificates for 796 babies and children, but no burial records. This week work got underway at the site to exhume those remains, which is expected to continue for a period of 24 months. While the work is ongoing the site will be closed off to the public, however the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT), which is responsible for the excavation, has confirmed today that those connected to the site will be invited to come and view the work being done there on July 8. (Pics: Andrew Downes, xposure) 'Families with relatives who were in the Tuam institution and survivors of the institution will have an opportunity to view the site works as part of a Family and Survivors Day that ODAIT is holding on July 8,' they told The Irish Post. 'Any family members or survivors interested in joining the site visit are welcome to contact ODAIT on [email protected] ,' they added. The excavation works are expected to take 24 months to complete (Pics:Andrew Downes, xposure) Earlier this week, Daniel MacSweeney, who leads ODAIT, said the families of those affected have been 'informed of the timeline' of works at the Tuam site. 'The initial four weeks will involve setting up the site, including the installation of 2.4-metre hoarding around the perimeter,' he explained. 'These measures are necessary to ensure the site's forensic integrity and to enable us to carry out the works to the highest international standards that govern the excavation and recovery programme.' Mr MacSweeney added: 'This is a unique and incredibly complex excavation. 'The work is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete. 'As the site will be under forensic control at all times during the excavation we are putting in place plans to facilitate a day for family members and survivors to include a visit to the perimeter of the forensically controlled site to view the works being undertaken.' Pick a day of the week and Spitfires have you covered

Pick a day of the week and the Windsor Spitfires have you covered. Article content The Ontario Hockey League released its 2025-26 schedule and the Spitfires will play at least one home game on every day of the week over the team's 34-game home schedule for the regular season at the WFCU Centre. Article content Article content It starts with the home opener on Sept. 20, which is the first of five Saturday home games. As usual, the club plays the majority of its games on Thursdays with a dozen slated. Eight more are set for Sundays, three each for Fridays and Wednesdays along with two on Mondays and one Tuesday game. October and November are Windsor's busiest home months with seven games slated at the WFCU Centre each month. Article content Article content 'We want to continue what we did on home ice,' said Spitfires' head coach Greg Walters, whose team tied for the best regular-season home record with London last season at 29-4-0-1. 'We only lost four (in regulation) last season and we'd like to boost the road record.' Article content Article content Early on the Spitfires will be away from Windsor for six of the club's first nine games to start the season. Article content 'I like that,' Walters said. 'We'll get it going and I like that we get some time together on the bus.' Article content However, in a league that often leans to the weekend, Windsor will have its share of grinding stretches for the season. The club plays three games in in four days on 12 occasions with one stretch seeing the club playing six times in nine days. Article content By contrast, the club will face just two stretches where the team plays three games in three days and both will see the Spitfires sandwich two home games around a road match. Article content Article content 'We only have the two, so that's a good thing,' Walters said. 'The three-in-threes are tough on kids, especial the top-end guys. It tends to be a lot.' Article content Windsor will play its annual Thanksgiving Day game on Oct. 13 against the Oshawa Generals, who are owned by Windsor's Rocco Tullio. The team will meet the Saginaw Spirit for its annual New Year's Eve at home on Dec. 31 in a 2:05 p.m. game and also face the Spirit on Family Day in at 2:05 p.m. start on Feb. 16. The Erie Otters will be in for St. Patrick's Day on March 17 at 7:05 p.m., which is also the team's final regular-season game of the season.

Family Day is back in Kanesatake

As the school year comes to a close, community members can once again look forward to a festive day of family fun, with the Kanesatake Health Center (KHC) Family Day event returning for the first time since 2023. 'It always turns out to be a really, really fun family event, so we definitely felt like that was missing,' said Jadyn Lauder, child and youth program coordinator at KHC. 'We're so excited to bring it back this year.' The June 20 event will move ahead rain or shine, with hundreds expected to turn out to the Powwow Grounds for face painting, fun bounces, local booths, a traditional social, a free barbecue lunch, a mechanical bull, and a strawberry bake-off. 'I always absolutely love our strawberry bake-off,' said Lauder. 'You don't realize how big it is until you get to that point where the judges are trying it and they're marking scores.' There is both a youth and adult category for the bake-off, and registration is required ahead of time by June 18 to participate. Strawberry fanatics who are not on the judging panel will also have an opportunity to sample the seasonal delicacy at Quench It Drinks, which specializes in fresh, homemade strawberry drink. The business is one of the many vendors that will be on hand at the event in addition to KHC booths letting community members know about available services. 'I am looking forward to my second time vending at Kanesatake's Family Day event,' said Ruby Powless, who founded and operates Quench It Drinks. 'It brings a great amount of appreciation and joy to be back serving up my signature drinks to families in the community. I enjoy the company that the event brings as well as the entertainment that comes with it.' Local artists and artisans will also be on hand, with community members like Kaysun Oke hosting booths. 'It's just a good time for all ages,' said Oke, who will be bringing her children to enjoy the festivities. They had a blast last time, she said. 'It's a great way for everyone to come together in a positive environment. It's all good vibes, and the kids get to see each other outside of school settings and continue to have fun, creating memories for the community.' Oke will be showcasing prints, jewelry with caribou tuft, quill work, and pyrography wearable art. 'I'm just so happy to be able to participate as a vendor in my community and just connect and showcase my work at the same time,' she said. Adding to the cultural offering, for this year's traditional social the KHC has invited the Kanehsatà:ke Traditional Women Singers to participate in the event, so community members will be in for a treat. 'Expect a day of enjoying outdoors,' said Lauder, suggesting people bring chairs or blankets. With school over, it's a great opportunity for youth to let loose, Lauder said. 'School is tough for a lot of these kids, so it's kind of nice to see them run wild and free. I couldn't ask for more at the end of the day, them just being kids,' she said. Kanesatake Family Day will take place at the Kanesatake Powwow Grounds from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 20. marcus@ Marcus Bankuti, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Error!
