FPM calls for 'Lebanon's neutrality' in Israel-Iran conflict

by Naharnet Newsdesk 18 June 2025, 16:30 The Free Patriotic Movement said Wednesday that Lebanon should not take part in the Israeli-Iranian conflict as the arch foes traded fire for the sixth day. "The war in the region is concerning and is threatening peace and stability in the region and in Lebanon," the statement said, describing the Israeli strikes on Iran as an aggression and condemning it. "The FPM is against any aggression on the sovereignty of any county." The statement, despite the condemnation, stressed that Lebanon must stay neutral and should not get involved, in order to preserve national interests and the security of the Lebanese people. "Lebanon's national interests require a full commitment to a policy that keeps Lebanon out of foreign conflicts, fortifies the domestic front, enhances stability, and prevents Lebanon from becoming an arena for regional clashes," the FPM said, as it urged international powers to restart nuclear talks and look for peaceful solutions that "preserve countries' sovereignty and spare people in the region more destruction and divisions."

Bassil's Media Office Denies 'Anonymous' Claim: We Have Repeatedly Affirmed Our Support for a Just Peace That Restores Rights and Ends Aggression

The media office of Free Patriotic Movement Chairman, MP Gebran Bassil, issued the following statement: 'An anonymous and suspicious individual made a false statement on MTV, alleging that former Foreign Minister and FPM leader Gebran Bassil once told members of the Lebanese diaspora in Washington: 'Get rid of Hezbollah and we are ready for peace with Israel.' The media office categorically denies this fabricated claim. Minister Bassil has never made such a statement, and he does not know the person in question—nor whether this individual ever participated in diaspora conferences or meetings, or was involved in the schemes that were previously orchestrated against him and that continue today against the diaspora. Regarding the issue of peace with Israel, Minister Bassil has consistently and publicly reiterated his stance: he supports a just peace—one that ends aggression, restores rights, including Lebanon's occupied territories, and firmly rejects the resettlement of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.'

What has Bassil said on Hezbollah, peace with Israel?

by Naharnet Newsdesk 16 June 2025, 14:58 Free Patriotic Movement chief Jebran Bassil on Monday denied remarks attributed to him about Hezbollah and the possibility of peace between Lebanon and Israel. 'A person whom we do not know made a false and suspicious statement on the MTV channel, claiming that former foreign minister FPM chief Jebran Bassil had once told Lebanese expats in Washington, 'Rid us of Hezbollah and we'll be ready for peace with Israel,'' Bassil's press office said. 'The FPM chief's press office denies what this suspicious and unknown person said about Hezbollah and (ex-)Minister Bassil does not remember at all any knowledge of this person and whether he had participated in any expat conferences or meetings,' the press office added. As for peace with Israel, the office reminded that Bassil 'has been publicly reiterating for years that he supports just peace that puts an end to aggression and returns rights, including occupied Lebanese territory, and that also prevents the naturalization of Palestinians in Lebanon.'

PERKESO Benefits Offer Relief To Family Of Former Media Practitioner

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- The widow of a former journalist who died of lymphoma last week is among the latest recipients of social security support from the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), in what she described as a crucial lifeline for her family. Anis Sabariah Kamaruddin, 45, whose husband Mohd Khairi Mazlan passed away on May 25, will receive a one-off Funeral Management Benefit (FPM) of RM3,000 and a monthly Survivors' Pension of RM2,553. In a statement today, PERKESO stated that the benefits, made possible by Mohd Khairi's final contribution in June 2021, are set to commence by the end of this month. Anis, now the sole carer for four children aged between nine and 20, including one with special needs, said the assistance was deeply appreciated. 'Alhamdulillah, these benefits will help us meet daily expenses and support our children's education,' she said. The late Mohd Khairi had a long-standing career, having worked with Utusan Malaysia, New Straits Times and Dagang News. PERKESO described his passing as an irreplaceable loss to his family and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that contributors and their dependents are not left behind. 'Social security protection is more than just financial aid. It represents enduring care and love for those left behind,' it said. PERKESO also reminded employers of their responsibility to make consistent contributions on behalf of employees, stressing that such protection is vital in the face of life's uncertainties.

Bassil says the FPM remains a major political force

Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader MP Gebran Bassil said municipal union elections are not solely about local development but are increasingly taking on a political dimension. He pointed to the FPM's recent victory in the Matn municipal union as the opening chapter in a broader electoral push. Turning to the southern district of Jezzine, Bassil remarked, "Watch with us how the Jezzine chapter will end. The Lebanese Forces claim they lost the city but won the union, while I say we won most of Jezzine's municipalities, and the union result will speak for itself." Bassil reaffirmed his party's commitment to supporting municipalities at both the local and national levels, highlighting two main priorities: the Syrian refugee issue and expanded administrative decentralization. He dismissed suggestions of his party's decline, asserting, "The FPM remains a major political force. Claims of its end are baseless. We are significantly stronger in these municipal elections compared to 2016." Bassil concluded by emphasizing that the FPM had once again demonstrated its presence and strength in Jezzine and South Lebanon whether through municipal councils or local mukhtars.
