48 weekly markets upgraded in Sabah to boost rural economy, food security
Arthur (second from left) after officiating the Pasar Tamu at Rancangan Belia Tiulon in Sook. SOOK (June 22): A total of 48 pasar tamu (weekly markets) across Sabah have been successfully upgraded or newly constructed under a Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) initiative, aimed at strengthening rural economic activity and supporting the National Food Security Policy. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the projects — funded with an allocation of RM15.6 million from the Federal Government — are now fully completed. Speaking to the media after officiating the upgraded Pasar Tamu at Rancangan Belia Tiulon in Sook, Arthur noted the transformation these projects brought to rural trading facilities. 'Previously, traders here used only wooden tables and canvas sheets to shield themselves from the sun and rain. With the upgraded infrastructure, I see great potential for further development,' he said. The Pasar Tamu at Rancangan Belia Sook, established in 2021 with just eight traders, has since expanded to include 40 regular vendors. The market upgrade, which began on 25 September 2024, was completed on 2 April 2025. Arthur, who is also the Member of Parliament for Pensiangan, said the upgrades reflect the government's commitment to empowering rural agro-entrepreneurs by providing more comfortable and conducive business environments. 'These projects were carried out in phases, prioritising markets most in need of repair or those no longer suitable for use. The upgraded markets are expected to boost the competitiveness of local agricultural products and spur local economic activity,' he said. The officiating event drew participation from the local community, including village leaders, government officials, and agro-based entrepreneurs. Also present were FAMA Director-General Abdul Rashid Bahri, FAMA Sabah and Labuan director Sarman Sidno and FAMA Market Institution Division director Mohd Shahrizan Mansor. With the upgraded facilities, the pasar tamu now offers a more systematic and appealing space for local entrepreneurs while serving as a weekly economic and social hub. It is hoped that the initiative will not only foster entrepreneurship but also preserve the traditional market culture that defines Sabah's rural communities.

Perak offers land to boost agriculture, food security
SUNGAI SIPUT: The Perak government is offering land to agro-entrepreneurs in every district in a bid to strengthen the state's agricultural industry and food security. State Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun said anyone interested can submit applications to the nearest district and land office (PDT). 'The state government, through the PDT in each district, is ready to assist interested agro-entrepreneurs in acquiring or expanding land via Temporary Occupation Licences to carry out agricultural activities. 'This also demonstrates the state government's commitment to encouraging agro-entrepreneurs to expand their cultivation, thereby contributing not only to the people of Perak but also beyond,' he said. He was speaking at a press conference after attending the Dialogue and Handover Ceremony for Marketing Contract Partner Equipment 2025 at the Farm Collection Centre in Kampung Tersusun Kledang Utama here today. On July 11 last year, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad announced that the state government had, in principle, allocated land resources for agricultural development, including areas gazetted as Food Security Zones and any suitable state-owned land in Perak. Regarding today's programme, Zolkafly said the agricultural equipment contributed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) to farmers under the Marketing Contract Partner (RPKP) programme is expected to help optimise production and increase income generation. 'The provision of equipment such as digital and analogue weighing machines, cash registers, plastic pallets, hand trolleys and so on is hoped to ease the work of the estimated 20 farmers involved in this RPKP programme,' he said. Meanwhile, FAMA deputy director-general (operations) Shahrizan Sudiman said that, to date, 62 agro-entrepreneurs and 650 farmers are directly involved in the RPKP programme nationwide.

Perak PMR 2025: FAMA Offers 900 Agro Madani Baskets At RM15 Each
LUMUT, June 14 (Bernama) -- A total of 900 Agro MADANI baskets priced at RM15 each are available for visitors at the three-day Perak MADANI Rakyat (PMR) 2025 programme, which ends tomorrow, at the Lumut Waterfront. Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) officer in Manjung, Mohamad Haspizul Abu Hassan, said 300 baskets containing fresh chicken, cabbage, spices and onions were provided each day. "We estimate sales of 300 baskets per day for this Agro MADANI basket. Alhamdulillah, the response was overwhelming that we ran out of stock early yesterday. "The four items in each basket are worth more than RM20, so we are cutting the price by RM5, especially for our customers during the Perak PMR 2025 programme," he said when met here today. He said FAMA also brought agricultural produce from various parts of Perak, including Lekir Chokanan mango from the Manjung district, and pomelo from Tambun. 'The Chokanan mango is widely grown in the Lekir area in Manjung district. It has a sweet taste, even though the appearance on the outside may not look appealing. "Today, the Chokanan mango is sold at RM5 per kilogram (kg), but if you buy three kilograms, you can get them for RM12. Usually, in the market, it is RM7 to RM8 per kilogram," he said. The PMR 2025 Perak at Lumut Waterfront is open from 9 am to 10 pm on Friday and Saturday, while on Sunday, the programme is scheduled to end at 6 pm. The government service stalls will operate every day until 6 pm. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to close the PMR 2025 in Perak on Sunday.
