Nearly 200,000 Ford vehicles recalled over risk of passengers getting trapped
An American car giant has recalled nearly 200,000 vehicles in the US due to a risk of passengers including children getting trapped in the back seat. Ford Motor Company is recalling 197,432 of its 2021 to 2025 Mustang Mach-E SUVs because owners could get locked out when the battery is low. A software glitch can cause the electric-powered door to lock after the driver shuts the front door, and trap a passenger like a child who cannot use door handles, according to the nation's agency enforcing vehicle performance standards. Such a scenario could be dangerous and life-threatening, especially in the summer months with hot weather, warned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). All the vehicles of that model and years could have the defect and customers should bring them to Ford dealers to update the software free of charge. Six customers reported having problems opening the back door after getting out of the vehicle, and two of those drivers had kids in the back seat. Those complaints led the NHTSA to contact Ford in January. Ford said it stopped producing the defective part on June 3, and will send letters notifying customers on June 23. The automaker plans to have a remedy ready by September 29 and said it will then mail follow-up letters. In the meantime, Ford is advising customers to watch out for warning signs like the SYNC screen displaying 'system off to save power', or going blank after the engine is turned off. Another sign may be the inside front door handles requiring a further pull that usual to exit. Ford stated it is 'not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition'. The automaker is also recalling more than 180,000 Explorers and 120,000 Lincoln Aviators of model years 2020 to 2025 over a faulty seat fold switch that can make them to move suddenly cause injuries or chances of a crash. It comes just over a month after Waymo recalled more than 1,200 of its driverless cars due to a software issue blamed for over two dozen minor crashes. Couch-surfing cats and trail-hiking dogs? Only in Hawaiʻi: How you can join the fun
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A walk in the park might not change the world, but at Hawaiian Humane Society, it could change a life. With three hands-on ways to connect with shelter pets via dog walking, short-term fostering through the Couch Crashers and Lap Crashers programs and field trips through ʻĪlio Explorers. These programs allow volunteers to step into something deeper than just animal care. They're offering sanctuary, one leash, one lap, one couch at a time. Easy exercise routines for pets of all sizes: A guide for Hawaiʻi's cats and dogs 'It really does make a lifesaving difference,' said Brandy Shimabukuro, communications director for the Hawaiian Humane Society. And that's not an overstatement. Calling all Oʻahu teens! These summer volunteer spots fill fast: Photos For some people, dog walking might sound like a nice way to get in some steps. For the dogs, it's a lifeline. 'The shelter environment is inherently stressful,' Shimabukuro said. 'Dog walking is a critical tool for us to make sure the dogs in our care are getting the exercise and mental stimulation that they need, because the four walls of their kennel can oftentimes be really prohibitive.' 7 tips for locals, visitors to avoid sharks in Hawaiʻi's waters Volunteers work closely with the shelter's behavior team and complete both online and in-person training before they ever take the leash. 'It's certainly fun, but it's also a critical role,' Shimabukuro said. 'There's a lot of benefits for dog walking.' People who are 18 and older can apply to become dog walkers. It begins at Hawaiian Humane Society's website under the 'Get Involved' tab. According to Isa Cortina, manager of volunteer services for the Hawaiian Humane Society, the process is structured for success. 'We're preparing you for that first day on campus,' Cortina said. 'You apply. You go through our prerequisites. We'll provide an online training that helps prepare our volunteers and kind of give them an idea of how it's going to be like to work with shelter dogs.' That training continues in person with staff and mentor volunteers. And for some, that first leash is only the beginning. 'We've actually had quite a few volunteers transition to employees here at Hawaiian Humane,' Cortina said. You can click to learn Crashers is a short-term foster program for dogs who need a break. It's designed to let people welcome a dog into their home for a week or two without pressure to adopt. It's a way to provide a calming environment and gather helpful information for matching dogs with potential families. 'Our couch crushers and lap crushers programs are short term foster programs that are adoptions teams coordinate, and they facilitate,' Shimabukuro said. 'It gives them a short break from the shelter one to two weeks at a time, sometimes even longer if they're really thriving.' Even if the dog doesn't stay forever, the benefits are real. 'It helps us to learn more about what they're like in a home environment,' Shimabukuro said. All supplies are provided, including food, toys, leashes and harnesses. 'So, it is at no cost to our couch crushers and lap catchers,' Cortina said. That week or two in a home, whether on the couch or in the yard, helps dogs learn new behaviors, relax and show sides of themselves that are harder to see in a kennel. 'There's zero guilt,' Shimabukuro said. 'If you decide this is not the right fit, you've still given that dog that little break from the shelter.' You can click to learn more. The Lap Crashers program is built on the same idea as Couch Crashers but is designed for adult cats. It gives cats a soft place to land and lets them decompress in a home for at least a week. 'A shelter can be an overstimulating environment for many cats, and we find that a short foster stay in a home can have a profound positive impact on their overall behavior and well-being,' said Shimabukuro. All you need to do is visit one of the two campuses, select a cat older than 7 months, fill out a few forms and bring home your new temporary roommate, along with all the supplies. And just like Couch Crashers, there's no pressure to adopt. But if you fall in love? The adoption process is easy. You can click to learn more. One day. One leash. One incredible adventure. ʻĪlio Explorers is the Hawaiian Humane Society's field trip program for dogs. Visitors and residents can take a dog out for the day and give them a break from the shelter. 'We welcome kamaʻāina and visitors to participate in ʻĪlio Explorers by reserving an appointment,' indicated the HHS's official guidelines. 'You will meet our team at your specifically requested campus, spend about 45 minutes with us to learn about safety, program requirements and dog behavior.' Then you're off. With a backpack of supplies and a hand-selected dog, volunteers can visit pre-approved parks, beaches and trails, always with the dog safely on a leash. The dog must be returned by 4 p.m. the same day, and all supplies should be returned as well. Dogs for this program are often selected based on their need for enrichment, or because they've been at the shelter a while and need a boost. And, yes, if a volunteer falls in love, adoption is an option. You can click to learn more. Both Shimabukuro and Cortina emphasized that fostering, even temporarily, has lasting effects. 'You've still given that dog or cat that little break from the shelter,' Shimabukuro said. 'And everybody fills out our report card. So, we learn more about that experience and later down the line we can find the right family for them.' You can click to learn more about the Hawaiian Humane Society. Ford recalls 492K SUVs for exterior door trim that can detach
This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. Ford Motor Co. has recalled more than 492,000, 2016-2017 Explorer models for exterior B-pillar door trim on the driver and front passenger side that may become loose or detach while driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recalled trim piece was introduced into production in June 2015. In April 2017, the automaker introduced assembly process improvements to ensure the part was adequately secured. According to the NHTSA, Ford currently does not have a remedy available for the nearly half a million recalled Explorer models, but it will notify customers about the recall and potential safety risk by June 9. A second letter will be mailed once a remedy is made available. Ford has been aware of the problem since July 2019, when the company published a technical service bulletin instructing dealership service technicians on how to repair loose B-pillar door trim on the driver's side of 2011-2019 Explorer models. In the TSB, the automaker cited a potential lack of adhesion of the 'front door upper molding to the door.' However, at the time, Ford did not consider the issue an unreasonable risk to safety due to the 'low mass/geometry of the part,' and after prior discussions with NHTSA about a separate trim detachment topic in 2018, the details of which were not identified in the recall report. On March 24, the NHTSA's Office of Defect Investigations notified Ford of 38 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) it received with complaints of driver and/or passenger front door B-pillar trim partially or fully detaching on 2016-2017 Explorers. Following this notification, Ford's Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) opened an investigation on March 25. From April through May, Ford's CCRG and body exterior team investigated the root cause of the trim detachments, which included collecting Explorer doors from scrap yards for analysis at the automaker's Central Labs facility. The investigation also included a review of photos of parts associated with warranty claims. Ford concluded that the loose trim was a result of improper application of the adhesive wet-out during assembly. Ford's Field Review Committee then approved a recall on May 16. An estimated 4% of the recalled Explorers are believed to have the defect, according to the recall report. As of April 7, Ford is aware of 1,482 warranty claims received between Dec. 4, 2015, and Feb. 10, 2025, but is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to loose or detached door trim. Ford has issued 69 recalls covering over 3.5 million vehicles since Jan. 1, according to the NHTSA. It's the highest number of any automaker so far in 2025. In comparison, General Motors has issued 12 recalls. Explorers' starting pitching paving way for early-season success
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – The Sioux City Explorers have tallied 14 wins on the year through 22 games, tied for second-most in the American Association and just one back of league-leader Kansas City. A key contributor: the team's pitching. The bullpen has been stellar, but it's the starting pitching for Sioux City that has stood out for the club so far. Just one season after earning American Association All-Star honors as a reliever, Kyle Marman is tied for the league lead with 40 strikeouts. His 2.43 ERA is just outside the top ten in the AA. Jared Wetherbee has fanned 32 batters this season, including 17 in his last two starts combined to go with 13 innings, allowing just three runs in a pair of wins. Austin Drury has tallied seven or more strikeouts in three of his four appearances this season. Zach Willeman is coming off his first win of the season, following up a 12-strikeout performance at home against Gary SouthShore on May 22nd. For an Explorers team that leads the American Association with 247 punchouts, the motivation for Sioux City's starters lie within each other. 'We work off each other so well. I think we do a great job of coming together, putting a good scouting report together, and just being able to build off of each other,' Wetherbee said. 'They've started to compete among each other. You hear the chatter among them, amd that's good when you can get the four guys that have really stepped up in the rotation to to keep competing against themselves, not competing against their starter, compete against yourselves,' Explorers manager Steve Montgomery mentioned. 'One guy goes seven, you hear the next guy the next night wanting to go eight,' Sioux City begins its three-game road series at Sioux Falls tonight at 6:35 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
