Liverpool report: Bayer Leverkusen to break transfer record in unprecedented deal

Advertisement Liverpool won their second title of the Premier League era last month and have moved quickly to strengthen their hand ahead of what looks certain to be a challenging title defence. Ex-Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso has moved on from his role as Leverkusen manager and Liverpool have already raided his former club twice since the end of the 2024/25 season. The Premier League champions were able to quickly wrap up the acquisition of rampaging right-back Jeremie Frimpong and in-demand midfield man Florian Wirtz is expected to follow. Advertisement It's been widely reported that Wirtz will move to Anfield for a Premier League record fee in the region of £116 million, with an agreement already reached between the clubs. With his Premier League minutes limited and Arne Slot's defensive preference locked in, the 22-year-old is believed to be a target for new Leverkusen boss Erik ten Hag. Advertisement Kicker have noted that Die Schwarzroten could even table a record offer in order to secure the defender, with Kerem Demiray the club's record signing for €28-32 million. 'Leverkusen have taken a liking to Jarell Quansah, and they may use the goodwill built up with Liverpool to agree a quick, simple and peaceful deal,' reports the Express. The Reds are apparently willing to hold out for £40m before letting Warrington-born Quansah leave Anfield despite the fact that he's started only 17 league games for Liverpool since his senior debut at the outset of 2023/24. Advertisement There's no real incentive for Liverpool to sell Quansah. He's still learning his trade and offers useful back-up to Slot's preferred duo of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate along with Joe Gomez. Van Dijk is still leading by example as Liverpool's captain and tying him down to a new contract this year was a crucial step towards mounting a formidable title defence but he is 33 years of age and his team will need depth now and a replacement in the future.

Iconic Carlos Tevez billboard recreated next to Manchester United's Old Trafford
The iconic Carlos Tevez billboard has been recreated as it was announced the star would be returning to Old Trafford. Striker Tevez famously sparked fury when he left Manchester United to join Manchester City in the summer of 2009, after a two-year loan spell expired. The Blues then rubbed their neighbours noses in it by paying for a huge sky blue advert on a billboard near Deansgate with an image of Tevez and the words 'Welcome to Manchester.' Now 16 years on, the often-recreated billboard has mimicked once more, and this time just a stone's throw from Old Trafford. It was today revealed Tevez would again grace the Old Trafford turf at this year's Soccer Aid. The now 41-year-old, who last played for his boyhood club Boca Juniors and who retired in 2022, will feature for the Word XI team. The new advert, displayed on the digital advertising screen over the White City roundabout, less than half a mile from Old Trafford, says 'Welcome back to Manchester' alongside an image of Tevez and the date Sunday June 15, when the charity game is behind held. Created by Robbie Williams in 2006 and held annually at OId Trafford, the charity game, broadcast live on ITV, brings together celebs and footballing legends and has raised millions for UNICEF. This year, former Heavyweight World Champion Tyson Fury will be managing England, with United legends Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes also returning to Old Trafford. One Direction star Louis Tomlinson and businessman and podcaster Steven Bartlett join a stacked squad full of new faces including Joe Hart and social media star Angry Ginge. Ex-Reds keeper Peter Schmeichel is on the World XI coaching staff, while Edwin van der Sar will also return to Old Trafford as one of the visiting goalkeepers. Former Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci and AC Milan star Nadia Nadim are set to make their Soccer Aid bows. Among the celebs pulling on the World XI kit are Tobi Brown, Martin Compston, Richard Gadd, Gorka Marquez, Brian Habana and Tony Bellew. The same billboard near Old Trafford was used a fortnight ago by Liverpool fans to troll United supporters following their title win. An advert placed by Liverpool fan channel The Anfield Wrap said: "Manchester, Just 37 miles to the country's most successful football club." It came after they secured the Premier League title and drew level with United's tally of 20 top-flight championships.

Virgil van Dijk ‘praying for speedy recovery' for those hurt in parade incident
Merseyside Police said a 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs after a car struck pedestrians on Water Street, close to where the parade had finished, with more than 50 people injured – including one child who was seriously hurt. As of Tuesday afternoon, 11 people remained in hospital and were said to be in stable condition. More than 50 people were initially taken to hospital, with others treated at the scene. Van Dijk wrote on an Instagram Story: 'My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected. Praying for a speedy recovery for everyone who suffered injuries. We are all with you.' Van Dijk's team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was born and grew up in West Derby close to the club's former Melwood training ground, expressed his sympathies on Instagram, adding: 'The city will continue to pull together as it always does.' Fellow Scouser and former captain Steven Gerrard wrote on Instagram he was 'shocked, sickened, and saddened'. Ex-Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, who attended Sunday's game against Crystal Palace and watched Monday's parade from close to where the incident would later occur, said his family were 'shocked and devastated'. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You'll never walk alone,' he added on Instagram. 'We continue to work with the emergency services and the local authorities to support their ongoing investigation and once again we would ask if anyone has any further information about the incident, please contact Merseyside Police.' Liverpool's local rivals Everton said they were 'deeply saddened by the horrific incident'. 'Our thoughts are with all those affected at this incredibly difficult time and we extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those who were injured,' said a statement. Merseyside Police said a 53-year-old white, British man from West Derby had been arrested, 'on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences, and driving whilst unfit through drugs'. Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill added: 'He remains in custody where he is being interviewed.' Footage of the incident circulating online appeared to show people in the crowd following Liverpool's celebrations attempting to get close to the driver of the car, with one managing to open the driver's door. Videos then appeared to show the driver close the car door before suddenly speeding up and veering into pedestrians on both sides of the crowded street. Officers quickly surrounded the car as witnesses attempted to stop the driver, who was eventually detained by police. The Prime Minister said he was in close contact with Liverpool metro mayor Steve Rotheram about the incident, adding: 'Scenes of joy turned to utter horror and devastation, and my thoughts and the thoughts of the whole country are with all of those that are affected, those injured, which of course includes children, their families, their friends, the whole community, Liverpool fans everywhere.'

Reds prosper with midfield axis
Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have been "different class" in Liverpool's run to the Premier League on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday night club, Sutton said: "I don't think anybody saw him [Gravenberch] playing that deeper midfield role but it's just shown what a talented footballer he is."You go back to Liverpool's recruitment and in 2023 all the talk of [Jude] Bellingham coming in, they signed these three [Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai] that summer and they have been the mainstays."Ex-Reds defender Stephen Warnock agreed and thinks Arne Slot's men have the perfect balance in their midfield."When you talk about Mac Allister and Gravenberch, I think they compliment each other so well," he said."Gravenberch drives it forward and Mac Allister is more than happy to sit there.
