Celtic will have 'one eye on Rangers' new manager' in title defence

Ex-Celtic ace Charlie Mulgrew reckons the Hoops will be keeping tabs on Rangers following the managerial shake-up at Ibrox. With the Gers' new American ownership bringing in Kevin Thelwell as sporting director and Russell Martin as head coach, fans are buzzing about potential squad enhancements after promises of investment. Martin has been charged with the hefty task of disrupting Celtic's stranglehold on Scottish football, which has seen them clinch 13 out of the last 14 titles and narrowly miss out on a sixth treble in nine seasons due to a Scottish Cup shoot-out loss to Aberdeen. Speaking after Celtic were handed a William Hill Premiership opener at home to St Mirren, Mulgrew said: "I'm sure Brendan Rodgers will be looking at signings and looking first and foremost to get the players in the building to stay and push on next year. "I think that cup final will leave a bit of a taste in their mouth and they'll be thinking when they get back at it. "It's a disappointing end to the season, although it was a great season when you look back. "It's hard to criticise when you look at how good the Champions League campaign was, the league campaign. "Trebles have become such a regular thing, thanks to Brendan Rodgers and the way Celtic have been recently. "But also, there will be one eye on Rangers' new manager and what he's going to bring. "They'll know he's a good manager and good ideas in the game and he'll be looking to get Rangers back on track. "You try and focus on yourself but there's no doubt about it. One eye is on... especially the fact they've got a new manager, so you don't know what he's going to bring. "You don't know, although they'll have an idea of his last teams and what they've done, but you don't know what kind of reaction he'll get from the players. "You imagine the reaction because he's new at the start and he's obviously a good pedigree, so that'll be interesting." :: Charlie Mulgrew appeared courtesy of William Hill and the Warm-Up, SPFL title sponsor.

Ex-Celtic star on ‘weird' White House meeting with Donald Trump as he talked Iran and trans athletes

He replied to one of the President's questions but was called 'too nice' AWKWARD MOMENT Ex-Celtic star on 'weird' White House meeting with Donald Trump as he talked Iran and trans athletes Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) YOU'VE surely seen it by now - the cringe worthy, awkward and frankly strange video of Donald Trump meeting the stars of Juventus at the White House. In amongst the players - who looked a mixture of nervous, stunned or disgusted - was a former Celtic star who has now opened up on the "weird" Oval Office encounter. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 1 Donald Trump hosted the Juventus squad at the Oval Office The Serie A giants were granted the opportunity to visit the President in Washington DC. But it descended into a bit of a farce as the squad were forced to listen to Mr Trump talk about the serious escalation in relations with Iran in front of them, as well as being asked for their opinions on trans athletes in sport. Mr Trump said at one point: "Could a woman make your team, fellas? "Tell me." After a few strange and anxious looks, the only one to offer a reply was former Celtic winger Timo Weah. He said "Yeah" before the president disregarded his response and replied "you're being nice." Mr Trump then turned to some senior Juve officials and asked: "What do you think, you think a woman could make the team? "General managers, what do you think?" One responded by saying: "We have a very good women's team." Mr Trump said: "You do have? Celtic transfer special - Nygren in and Kyogo to return "But they should be playing with women. "It's one of those things right. "They're very diplomatic." The President then asked where the two American players in the squad were - Weah and Weston McKennie - before shaking their hands and calling them "the best players on the field." Speaking after the bizarre incident, Weah, who played for Celtic on loan in the 2018-19 season, said: "It was weird. I was caught by surprise, honestly, when he started talking politics, with Iran and everything. "I was kind of like, I just want to play football... "They just told us that we have to go, and I had no choice but to go. "So I guess it was a cool experience, obviously being in the White House as a first time, it's always wonderful. "But I'm not one for the politics, so it wasn't that exciting." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

St Mirren have confirmed Park has replaced Martin Foyle as their new head of recruitment and emerging talent after Foyle left the club to join Carlisle United. St Mirren chief operating officer Keith Lasley said: "We are sorry to see Martin moving on and wish him the best of luck in his new challenge. "His contributions have been key in the club's progression over the past few seasons and we thank him for all his efforts. "We have, however, moved quickly to bring John to the club and we are excited to welcome him to St Mirren. Park stirred up controversy when he moved to Rangers in 2022 following his success at their rivals across the city. He worked under the supervision of Ross Wilson at Ibrox and departed the club in December 2023, when Rangers wiped the slate clean of Michael Beale and his coaching staff. Nils Koppen took up the position when Philippe Clement replaced the Englishman in the dugout. On his latest move to Paisley, Park said: "I'm delighted to be joining St Mirren. "The club has a clear strategy in terms of its football operations and I believe my experience will help build upon that." FOUR to join Rangers before Champions League Plus Aarons impact on Tavernier REVEALED Manager Stephen Robinson added: "Martin has been an integral part of what we've done over the past three and a half years and he's been an integral part of what I've done as a manager over 10 years now. "He's a close friend of mine now and it's a sad loss for the club. "Another opportunity arose that was exciting for him and it's with regret that Martin is leaving. I'd like to put on record my thanks to him for his recruitment and for all he's done at the football club. "The club have appointed John and it's important that we get working together quickly, build a relationship, and I look forward to that." The sports media and PR professional also worked with Postecoglou at Spurs but she reckoned the letter she received to mark the happy day with new husband Christian Fuller this weekend was "the best wedding letter to receive". Sharing it on X, Gould wrote: "Thank you Celtic. One a Celtic, always a Celt." The note, entitled 'Congratulations on your Wedding Day' and signed by Rodgers himself, read: "On behalf of myself, the team, and everyone else at Celtic Football Club we would like to wish you huge congratulations on your wedding day. "We hope it's a joyous and memorable occasion as you begin your life together, with many happy years ahead. "Thank you for being such a passionate supporter of Celtic Football Club and may your journey together in life be like Paradise. "Enjoy your special day and celebration of love. That man is Jonjoe Kenny, who had a rather underwhelming stint at Celtic during their failed attempt to win ten in a row. That was during a loan spell from Everton but, now 28, the former England Under-21 cap is coming off a three year stint at Hertha Berlin in Germany. We told you how he was one of FOURTEEN former Hoops stars who were available on a free contract. And he fits the bill for Razvan Lucescu's side, who finished third last season and go into the Conference League. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote: "Jonjoe Kenny says yes to PAOK, deal done and here we go. "Agreement between club and player in the last hours. Medical check and signing in the next few days. Jonjoe Kenny will play in Europe next season after rejecting Köln, Werder Bremen, Sheffield United." Taylor, decided to quit Celtic after six years when his contract expired at the end of the season. With Kieran Tierney returning to the Hoops, he chose to move on. Greek side PAOK looked to be among the frontrunners for his signature. Ex-Celtic coach Eric Black on the Cup exit that rocked Scottish football plus life with Lubo and Dr Jo But media there claimed earlier this week that talks with the ex-Kilmarnock ace had frozen. That could now open the door for Copenhagen, who can also offer Taylor the prospect of a potential quickfire return to Champions League football. They regained the Superliga title after pipping Midtjylland to top spot by a single point and will now enter the competition in the second qualifying round.
