‘Jaws' turns 50: How other classic movies bit off the shark's signature riff — from ‘Caddyshack' to ‘Clerks'

Like the killer great white shark, the 'Jaws' theme song took a big bite out of movie history. The terrifying two-note theme of the 1975 summer blockbuster — which turns 50 on June 20 — has been riffed on in other classic films for its cultural impact that is still striking fang-crunching fear in the masses five decades later. Composer John Williams' menacing motif has been referenced — and ripped on — in other big films that have taken it from horror to humor. 9 'Jaws' defined the summer blockbuster after its release on June 20, 1975. Courtesy Everett Collection 'I think it's a compliment when anything becomes parodied that much, like, if you work your way into a popular comedy movie or something,' film music historian Tim Greiving — who wrote the upcoming biography 'John Williams: A Composer's Life' — exclusively told The Post. ''It's, like, acknowledging that this is something that is so culturally important, or that everybody recognizes it, that you can kind of play on it. If it was a little more obscure, the reference wouldn't work. I'll take it as a compliment.' But while the theme has been spoofed, Williams — who won his first of four Oscars for Best Original Score for 'Jaws' — took it very seriously. 'I think that serious intention comes through in the music and keeps it from being campy,' said Greiving. 9 Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider co-starred in 1975's 'Jaws.' Courtesy Everett Collection Still, the theme has been played for laughs in classic comedies such as 'Airplane!' and 'Caddyshack.' 'The funny thing is, John Williams has talked about [how] sometimes he plays it in concert, and people start laughing, and it's not supposed to make you laugh, although it made ['Jaws' director] Steven Spielberg laugh when he first heard it,' said Greiving. 'So it has this interesting psychological effect now.' 'But I think at its core, it still does what it was supposed to do — which is freak you out.' Here, we dive into seven films that have sunk their teeth into the 'Jaws' theme. '1941' 9 Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi co-starred in the 1979 war comedy '1941.' 'Caddyshack' 9 Ted Knight and Chevy Chase were golfing goofballs in 1980's 'Caddyshack.' ©Orion Pictures Corp/Courtesy Everett Collection When a candy bar is mistaken for a turd in a swimming pool, the 'Jaws' theme heightens the horror in the 1980 comedy starring Billy Murray and Chevy Chase. '9 1/2 Weeks' 9 Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger steamed up the screen in 1986's '9 1/2 Weeks.' ©Orion Pictures Corp/Courtesy Everett Collection When a kid claims that his friend can fart the 'Jaws' theme in this 1986 erotic drama, Mickey Rourke mimics it. How sexy. 'Spaceballs' 9 Bill Pullman and John Candy parodied 'Stars Wars' in 1987's 'Spaceballs.' Mel Brooks' 1987 'Star Wars' parody plays off the menacing motif from 'Jaws' while chasing a rebel ship. 'Back to the Future II' 9 Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reunited for 'Back to the Future II' in 1989. The shark tale's theme plays as Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly encounters an advertisement for 'Jaws 19' — the 18th sequel to the original — when he travels to 2015. 'Clerks' 9 Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson co-starred in Kevin Smith's directorial debut 'Clerks' in 1994. Jeff Anderson's character in Kevin Smith's 1994 cult classic dips into the 'Jaws' theme as his triangular tortilla chip cuts through some 'thick & chunky' salsa.

"It Is Grown Up More": Joe Locke Teases What Fans Can Expect From The "Heartstopper" Movie

Joe Locke has had arguably one of the biggest young careers in recent years. Joe's very first acting projects have been Netflix's Heartstopper, where he stars as Charlie Spring, and then he followed it up with Marvel's Agatha All Along, playing Wanda Maximoff's son, Billy. Samuel Dore / Netflix / Everett Collection, Marvel / Disney+ / Everett Collection So, to celebrate Agatha All Along, Heartstopper, his Broadway debut in Sweeney Todd, and so much more, we caught up with Joe to talk about everything in a game of First Times. Related: This 17-Question IQ Test Will Reveal How Much Celebrity Knowledge You Have He recalled his first — of MANY — auditions for Marvel, with the first audition including reading the scene when Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) interrogates Billy in Episode 1. Joe also revealed that a lot of Heartstopper is actually improvised, saying, "There's a lot of montages and so, in the script it'll just be like, 'Nick and Charlie play in the snow.' A lot of it is improv. I am not the best at improv. I'm great at improv if I'm, like, not being so nice to someone because it's easier. But, like, Heartstopper improv is a lot of cushy, nice stuff, so Kit is far better at that than me, so he leads it often." Related: Here Are 10 Celebs Who've Publicly Admitted The Reasons Why They Regret Ending Their Marriages And he even teased the upcoming Heartstopper movie, which will be the final installment. He told us, "It is grown up more. But it's still Heartstopper. I think we're trying to really make it [as] cinematic as possible and really finish the story in a really nice way." And heck, we even had time to ask some questions not related to Joe's impeccable acting career so far, like who his first celebrity crush was. You can watch Joe's full First Times video, where he even recalls taking Patti LuPone to a gay bar, and more, below: And be sure to watch him in Agatha All Along and Heartstopper, with each streaming on Disney+ and Netflix now. Mark Hamill addresses rumors he ‘quit' the ‘Star Wars' franchise, reveals his future plans

May the force be with you. Mark Hamill is finally setting the record straight regarding recent rumors he 'quit' the 'Star Wars' franchise. The 73-year-old actor, who portrayed Luke Skywalker in six of the popular sci-fi films, opened up about his future in a galaxy far, far away during an episode of NBC News' 'Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist' set to air on June 15. Today 8 Hamill clarified that he did not quit the 'Star Wars' franchise. Today 'Well, let me say: they haven't asked me,' Hamill told Geist, clarifying that he did not quit the iconic franchise. 'It's not like they said, 'Please come back.'' Advertisement 'I don't want to make a big PR pronouncement like 'This is my decision,'' he added. 'I'm just saying that it really felt like a conclusion. My character was given complete closure. I died, ironically by overdosing on the Force, I might point out.' Hamill's character dies at the end of 2017's 'The Last Jedi.' 8 Hamill as Luke Skywalker in 1977's 'Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.' ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection 8 Hamill in 2017's 'Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.' ©Walt Disney Co./courtesy Everett / Everett Collection Advertisement But despite Skywalker's death, Hamill reprised the role once more in 2019's 'The Rise of Skywalker' as a Force spirit. 'The Rise of Skywalker' appeared to officially end the character arc that began when Hamill first portrayed Luke Skywalker in George Lucas' first film in the franchise 42 years earlier in 1977. 'Once the Skywalker trilogy was over, it was a whole new era for them,' Hamill explained to Geist. 'George gave them this amazing canvas, the entire galaxy. They can do Westerns, mysteries, comedies, whodunits, anything within that realm of 'Star Wars.'' 8 Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca in 1980's 'Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.' ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection Advertisement 8 Hamill as Luke Skywalker in 1983's 'Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.' ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection 'And they're doing so well,' he continued. 'I just think it's time. I had my time. I'm really appreciative, but I'm really looking to the future for all these new projects.' The rumors that Hamill quit the 'Star Wars' franchise first started swirling last month when the actor also told that he 'had his time' with the sci-fi film series and that 'they should focus on the future.' 'I am so grateful to George for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called 'Star Wars' the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,' he told the site on May 31. 'We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that.' 8 Hamill explained that while he has not quit the 'Star Wars' franchise, he believes his character's arc has come to a natural conclusion. Today 8 'I just think it's time. I had my time,' Hamill said. 'I'm really appreciative, but I'm really looking to the future for all these new projects.' Getty Images 'But my deal is, I had my time,' Hamill continued. 'I'm appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.' Whether Hamill returns or not, Disney has several more 'Star Wars' projects planned for the future – including a standalone film starring Ryan Gosling titled 'Star Wars: Starfighter.' Advertisement 'This is the perfect place to start this journey for us, because it's such an incredible reminder of why we're going to make this movie and who we're going to make this movie for,' Gosling, 44, said when the movie was first announced in April. 'This is a standalone. It's not a prequel, not a sequel. It's a new adventure,' he added. 'It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet.'

Mandy Patinkin: How I bruised a rib filming 'Princess Bride'

Hello, his name is Inigo Montoya. Mandy Patinkin, who starred as the iconic Spanish fencer in the classic 1987 fairy tale swashbuckler 'The Princess Bride,' revealed that fans still recite his character's lines to him 'pretty much on a daily basis.' In the Rob Reiner-directed movie, Inigo is on a revenge quest to avenge his father, and famously repeats, 'Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die,' to 'the six fingered man' (Christopher Guest). Advertisement 'I pinch myself every time it happens,' Patinkin, 72, exclusively told the Post. 'I can't get over that I got to be that guy in that movie. How does that happen? I don't know how it happens!' 9 Mandy Patinkin in 'The Princess Bride.' Along the way, they make enemies-turned-allies with Inigo Montoya, and his friend Fezzik (Andre the Giant). The modern classic boasts a slew of fans, from the Pope to mobster John Gotti's crew. Patinkin has kept busy since the hit, recently debuting the pilot of his new show, 'Seasoned,' at the Tribeca Film Festival, which also stars his wife, actress Kathryn Grody. 9 Mandy Patinkin attends a ceremony honoring him with the 2,629th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on February 12, 2018 in Hollywood, California. The show follows Patinkin and Grody, 78, playing exaggerated versions of themselves as they have various comedic misadventures around New York. Patinkin's resume also includes 'Homeland,' Barbra Streisand's 'Yentl' and a Tony win for 'Evita.' But, his early career role as the revenge seeking Inigo Montoya remains one of his most iconic. 9 Mandy Patinkin and Cary Elwes in 'The Princess Bride.' 20th Century Fox Licensing/Merchandising / Everett Collection Advertisement 9 Mandy Patinkin with his wife Kathryn Grody in their video interview with the New York Post on June 11, 2025. So much so, that the Tony winner got hurt on set. 'The only injury I got was when Billy Crystal was doing 13th century period jokes, ten hours a day for three days straight,' he said, referring to the scene when Westley (Elwes) was 'mostly dead,' so Inigo and his friend Fezzik bring him to Miracle Max (Crystal) to perform a miracle and revive Westley. 9 Andre the Giant, Mandy Patinkin and Wallace Shawn in 'The Princess Bride' in 1987. 20th Century Fox Licensing/Merchandising / Everett Collection 9 Robin Wright, Andre the Giant, and Mandy Patinkin in 'The Princess Bride.' Angry owner of ‘Breaking Bad' house sprays fans with water hose, demands they get off famous property

There's a new villain living in Walter White's house. Joanne Quintana grew up in the ranch-style home in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the filming of 'Breaking Bad,' which aired from 2008 to 2013. Now, Quintana has to deal with fans of the show flocking to the famous house to take pictures — much to her chagrin. 11 Walter White's house in 'Breaking Bad.' Alamy Stock Photo Influencer Santi, who has over 174,000 Instagram followers, went to Quintana's home for a day and witnessed what she has to deal with. In his viral clip, Santi filmed Quintana spraying fans on the street with her water house, as she demanded they stay away from her property. 11 Santi and Joanne Quintana outside the 'Breaking Bad' house. 'You can take a picture from that corner, do not get close,' she continued. 'And no tripods, no nothing. One picture then you go.' But eventually Quintana and her family dealt with strangers constantly visiting the property. 11 Joanne Quintana during an interview about living in the 'Breaking Bad' home. KOB 4 On one occasion, a package for 'Walter White' showed up at the home at 4:30 in the morning, leading the Quintanas to call the bomb squad out of concern for their safety. They also put up a fence — but that did not deter television nerds from showing up to the home. Some fans even tossed full pizza pies on the roof of the house's garage in an homage to a classic scene from the show, but they were reprimanded by 'Breaking Bad' creator Vince Gilligan on the 'Better Call Saul' podcast back in 2022. 11 Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul in 'Breaking Bad.' ©AMC/courtesy Everett Collection 'There is nothing original, or funny, or cool, about throwing a pizza on this lady's roof,' Gilligan said at the time. 'She is the sweetest lady in the world, and if you are getting on her nerves you are doing something seriously f**king wrong,' he added about Quintana.
