Police stop dozens of drivers making illegal turn onto Hwy 400 ramp in Barrie
New signage is posted at Essa Road and Fairview Road in Barrie indicating a no left turn onto northbound Highway 400 on Fri., June 6, 2025. Police officers stopped dozens of drivers making an illegal turn onto a Highway 400 ramp in Barrie's south end Friday during an educational blitz aimed at alerting motorists about the new signage and rules. 'For just over a week, the new ramp to northbound Highway 400, just as you pass under the Essa Road overpass has been open. The old access lane at the Fairview Road intersection is now a through lane,' Barrie police posted on social media Friday. Since the Essa Road/Highway 400 interchange project began years ago, the area has been full of detours, lane closures and delays, but now, with the majority of the work completed, motorists are urged to obey the new signage. Barrie police communication correspondent Peter Leon says officers stopped 30 motorists during a short time Friday, adding drivers are responsible to adhere to the signage. 'The opening of the new on-ramp and the through lane-related change has been well advertised,' he noted in an email to CTV News. 'Failing to do so will only create traffic chaos or potentially, a very serious motor vehicle at a very busy intersection that serves as a exit from Highway 400. Continuing to disobey the signage will not only upset law abiding drivers but will congest the intersecting roadways in the immediate area.' The new Highway 400 northbound on-ramp from eastbound Essa Road opened June 5. New Fairview Road traffic signals are in operation, with the road back to the existing configuration, with all eastbound Essa lanes once again through lanes only. Left turns toward northbound Highway 400 are no longer permitted. 'Your safety remains our priority, please obey the signs at this location,' police noted. The southbound Highway 400 on-ramp from westbound Essa Road reopened last month. The project included widening Essa Road from four lanes to six lanes from Bryne Drive to east of Fairview Road to help ease traffic congestion. Highway 400 NB ramp at Essa Road officially opens in Barrie
Construction pylons block the on-ramp to Highway 400 south along Essa Road in Barrie, Ont. Traffic in the south end of Barrie will flow a little smoother along a busy section of Essa Road with the official opening of the northbound ramp to Highway 400 on Thursday. Barrie police posted to social media Thursday morning to notify motorists the ramp under the 400 bridge had opened, and the temporary on-ramp to the highway that required a left turn at the lights at Fairview Road was no longer. That area is now a through lane. Last month, the Fairview Road carpool lot was reopened and the Ardagh Road carpool lot was closed for crews to continue work along Essa Road. It is expected to reopen by the end of July. The project consisted of constructing a new interchange at Essa Road and Highway 400 and widening Essa Road from four lanes to six from Bryne Drive to Fairview Road to improve traffic flow. The Essa Road interchange and Highway 400 overpass replacement project is being led by the Ministry of Transportation.

Highway 400 on-ramp from Essa Road in Barrie to reopen this week
The southbound Highway 400 on-ramp from westbound Essa Road is expected to reopen this week after what will be a nearly two-week closure due to road work. Construction on the new interchange at Essa Road and Highway 400 is progressing with crews conducting bridge and road work on the 400 southbound lanes. During the construction, traffic has been diverted via Veteran's Drive and Mapleview Drive West. The City anticipates the on-ramp to reopen Thursday. Additionally, the carpool lot at Fairview and Essa Roads reopened, but the lot on Ardagh Road has since closed, and will remain closed until the end of July. The Ministry of Transportation is overseeing the extensive project, which has included widening Essa Road to six lanes between Bryne Drive/Ardagh Road and Fairview Road. The transformation is designed to improve traffic flow in an ever-growing city. The Ministry expects the project to wrap up this fall.
