Botafogo stun Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in FIFA Club World Cup on Igor Jesus' goal

Botafogo stunned Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 on Thursday night in each club's second match of the Club World Cup. Igor Jesus scored late in the first half, and the South American champions made it stand up through a tense second half while moving atop the group at 2-0-0. PSG hadn't lost in any competition since May 3, but the European champions looked understandably weary at times before a lively Rose Bowl crowd of 53,699. Jesus' stunning score in the 36th minute was the first goal allowed since May 17 by PSG, which routed Atlético Madrid 4-0 last Sunday in Pasadena. The French powerhouse had outscored its last three opponents by a combined 12-0, winning the French Cup and the Champions League final along the way. Ballon d'Or contender Ousmane Dembélé missed his second straight game for PSG with a quadriceps injury. His teammates still dominated possession in the first half, even though coach Luis Enrique rotated his starting lineup. Everything came undone with the remarkable individual effort by Jesus, the Brazilian striker reportedly headed for Nottingham Forest next season. PSG finished with 16 shot attempts to Botafogo's four — but all four were on target, whereas PSG only got two on net. Key moment Jesus controlled Jefferson Savarino's long pass, outmaneuvered two defenders and thumped a shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. He leaped over a barrier and up onto the front row of the Rose Bowl stands to celebrate with Botafogo's ecstatic supporters. Takeaways PSG had little of the sublime connective play that characterized its stellar run over the past month, but Enrique's club is still in strong position to advance as it heads to Seattle on Monday to play Major League Soccer's Sounders. Thousands of boisterous Brazilian fans made the trip to celebrate one of the most remarkable victories in Botafogo's storied history. The club faces Atlético on Monday at the Rose Bowl with a surprising chance to advance from this difficult group. What they said 'That's why I say the graveyard in football is full of favorites. It was really about believing in ourselves. ... We played a match that was almost perfect, technically speaking. There were really no opportunities for PSG. We had a lot of team spirit, and I was saying backstage that we won this match making PSG taste their own poison, because we were what PSG has been for some time, which is a real team.' — Botafogo coach Renato Paiva. 'I think it's normal. This competition is very intense and difficult. Every team is motivated, especially against our team. I think sometimes our team struggled against their defense. I think Botafogo is one of the toughest defensive teams in the tournament.' — Enrique.

PSG sizzle in California sun with big World Cup win, Bayern rout Auckland

Paris St Germain picked up right where they left off in their first match since winning the Champions League last month, turning what was billed as a blockbuster into a 4-0 rout of Atletico Madrid in their 2025 Fifa Club World Cup opener. The midday match, timed to accommodate viewers in Europe, drew 80,619 people to the sun-soaked Rose Bowl in Pasadena — site of the 1994 World Cup final where Brazil beat Italy on penalties — on a day when the toasty conditions led to water breaks in both halves. 'It's the best scheduled time for the European countries, but it's difficult to play in these conditions,' PSG coach Luis Enrique said after the Group B clash. Enrique was encouraged to see the huge turnout, which set an attendance record for PSG and Atletico Madrid this season, according to Fifa. 'It's really great to feel that love in another part of the world,' Enrique said. 'We are happy and we want to continue in that way.'

PSG boss Luis Enrique says 'the teams are suffering' in the 40°C heat at the Club World Cup as Vitinha joins him in criticism of 'difficult' kick-off times

PSG kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a resounding 4-0 over Atletico Madrid on Sunday but the French side were far from happy with the playing conditions in the States. The Champions League winners returned to action with an emphatic performance over their Spanish counterparts at the Rose Bowl Stadium in California. Goals from Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu and Kang-In Lee secured the win in their opener as Atletico were reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Clement Lenglet. The match was scheduled for a midday kick-off in Pasadena, Los Angeles, despite temperatures reaching nearly 40°C under the sun and 60 per cent humidity. Speaking after the dominant victory, both manager Enrique and star midfielder Vitinha voiced their concerns. 'The match was clearly influenced by the temperature,' Enrique said. The time slot is great for European audiences, but the teams are suffering. 'In terms of play, it's impossible to perform at a very high level for 90 minutes,' he added, despite praising the club's dominance.' Portuguese midfielder was asked aboiut the issue, saying: 'Of course, it's difficult. It's for both teams. 'It might be a bit harder for Atletico because they don't have the ball. For me, it's harder to run after the ball. 'It's hot here today at this time. I'm all red. It was really difficult, but we're trying to recover as much as possible because at this point in the season, it can be decisive.'
