Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters detained in NYC: Organizers
MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – Dozens of protesters were detained during a pro-Palestinian protest at Maersk's office in Midtown Manhattan, according to organizers. The protest was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement and Jewish Voice for Peace. More Local News Organizers said around 100 people were detained. Police confirmed several people were taken into custody during a demonstration on 45th Street just before 12 p.m. The NYPD would not confirm the number of people detained. Around 200 people took over the lobby of Maersk, which ships military-related cargo from U.S. government agencies to Israel, according to Reuters. The company has denied shipping arms or ammunition to 'any active conflict zone,' Reuters reported. Protesters are calling on the company to stop any shipments to the Israeli military. 'Maersk is not just a carrier of goods — it is a central player sustaining Israel's military operations. Gaza is in dire need of shipments of aid, not shipments used to slaughter,' said Jay Saper with Jewish Voice for Peace. Maersk did not immediately respond to PIX11's request for comment. Don't fall for this lottery scam, NYPD warns
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The NYPD is warning New Yorkers not to fall for a lottery scam that promises a share of the winnings. In the scheme, a scammer will ask a stranger to help cash a winning lottery ticket. The scammer will promise part of their winnings in exchange for making a cash deposit. More Local News In May, a 79-year-old woman who fell for this lottery scam was robbed of jewelry and cash worth around $27,500, according to the NYPD. Once she agreed to cash the ticket, the scammers threatened to assault her and forced her to take them back to her home, police said. You should never redeem a lottery ticket for someone you don't know, according to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. The New York Lottery lists several common scams on its website, including being asked to pay a fee to claim a prize or receiving a notification of a winning ticket. Only people with New York Lottery subscriptions would get a prize notification. Never cash a check claiming to be from the New York Lottery that includes processing fees, officials warned. New Yorkers can report lottery scams to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP or online.
