BJP's Event To Mark 50 Years Of Emergency: Amit Shah, Heroes Who Fought Against Indira To Attend

Last Updated: This by-invitation exhibition will have a series of stands chronicling the Emergency era and the formation of first non-Congress government of Morarji Desai, News18 has learnt The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making big plans for June 25, the day which will mark 50 years of the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi. The Centre, meanwhile, has scheduled events which will last a year. With the Congress-led Opposition often accusing the Modi government of causing 'death of democracy" and imposing 'undeclared emergency", the BJP plans to use the occasion to strike back. On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India, BJP's think tank Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation (SPMRF) has organised a mega event at Delhi's Prime Minister Museum and Library. This strictly by-invitation event will have a huge exhibition, with a series of stands chronicling the Emergency era and the fight against it and the formation of the first non-Congress government of Morarji Desai, News18 has learnt. 'Every prominent opposition leader of the time from all political spectrums who fought against the Emergency will be prominently displayed in the exhibition. After all, everyone fought it together," said a source privy to the developments. From Gujarat Navnirman agitation to Jayaprakash Narayan's movement — the exhibition is likely to feature all key moments that shaped India spanning from 1975 to 1977, which was marked by suspension of civil liberties, censorship of the press, and widespread persecution of political opponents. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be the chief guest who will deliver the keynote address of the evening. Shah will speak for around 45 minutes, where he is expected to lash out at the Congress in his signature style. Invites are now being sent out. 'This eve of reflection will revisit the suppression of civil liberties, censorship of the press, and imprisonment of political voices during the Emergency and will reaffirm our enduring commitment to democratic values and constitutional freedoms," reads the invite that News18 has seen. Binay Kumar Singh, Director of SPMRF, wants to set the tone a night before the D-Day when the BJP's youth and the whole government apparatus goes into making it a big success. The Centre has already instructed all states and Union Territories to undertake a year-long commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency's imposition as 'Constitution Murder Day' with a Mashal yatra launched from Delhi on June 25, which will end at Kartavya Path on March 21, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

Dhankhar slams Supreme Court over Emergency-era verdict, says darkest in judicial history

Dhankhar also questioned the then president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed for signing the proclamation of Emergency on the 'instance' of then prime minister Indira Gandhi and not the entire council of ministers. According to an official statement, he said the judgment of the Supreme Court overruling that of nine high courts legitimised dictatorship and authoritarianism. New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI) Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday slammed the Supreme Court for its verdict delivered during the Emergency, dubbing it as the 'darkest' in the judicial history of the world. Addressing a group of Rajya Sabha interns here, the vice president said, 'A president cannot act on the advice of an individual, the prime minister. The Constitution is very categorical. 'There is a council of ministers headed by the PM to aid and advise the president. This was one violation, but what was the result? More than 1,00,000 citizens of this country were put behind bars in hours,' he said. Referring to the role of the judiciary during the Emergency, Dhankhar said, 'That was a time when the fundamental essence of democracy capsized in times of distress. People look up to the judiciary. 'Nine high courts in the country have gloriously defined that emergency or no emergency, people have fundamental rights and there is access to the justice system. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court overturned all nine high courts and gave a judgment which will be the darkest in the history of any judicial institution in the world that believes in the rule of law,' he further said. Dhankhar pointed out that the decision was that 'it is the will of the executive to have Emergency for as much time as it thinks fit'. The top court also ruled that during an Emergency, there are no fundamental rights. 'So the judgment of the Supreme Court legitimised dictatorship, authoritarianism and despotism in this land,' he said. The vice president said the present government has 'wisely' decided to observe June 25 every year as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. Emergency remained in force between June 25, 1975 and March 21, 1977. Samia Sami, Assistant Minister for Tourism Companies and Head of the Official Egyptian Hajj Tourist Mission, stated that the pilgrimage concluded in record time due to the regional situation. A total of 80 tourist buses, carrying approximately 7,500 pilgrims, departed smoothly from Mecca and Medina and traveled via the Halat Ammar land crossing on the Saudi-Jordanian border, continuing through the Jordanian port of Aqaba and arriving at Egypt's Nuweiba port. Sami noted that the Central Emergency Operations Room—established by the Hajj mission under ministerial directives—closely monitored all bus movements from Saudi Arabia to Egypt. As a result, the entire overland pilgrimage concluded without significant delays or congestion. Sami expressed her deep appreciation to the authorities and agencies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and the Arab Republic of Egypt. She also extended gratitude to the Chamber of Travel and Tourism Companies and Agencies, and to the tourism companies responsible for organizing this year's overland Hajj trips, for their swift response and effective collaboration with the mission. Regarding pilgrims returning via air travel, Sami confirmed that arrangements are ongoing to facilitate their return on scheduled flights. The final groups are expected to arrive within the coming days, with continued efforts to ensure their comfort and safety throughout the process.
