Herefordshire bin lorry fires caused by disposable vapes
Two bin lorry fires were found to have been caused by disposable vapes, a council has Council said the vapes had been put inside household recycling urged residents to place small electrical items - including vapes - in a plastic bag on top of bins, to be collected by its new waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) service."Two fires caused by vapes have needed to be tackled... which not only disrupts waste collection and recycling, but also uses up valuable time for the fire service," said councillor Elissa Swinglehurst, cabinet member for environment. "We as a county are leading the way when it comes to collecting vapes and other small electrical items as part of our waste collections, but it is incredibly important that people follow the correct procedure and place their small electrical items on top of their bins, and not inside," added Swinglehurst. The WEEE service forms a part of standard waste collections in to the National Fire Chiefs Council, battery fires in bins and at waste sites are at an all-time high.A survey found that 94% of UK council said fires caused by batteries in domestic waste were an "increasing challenge". More than 1,000 trees with ash dieback felled in Herefordshire
More than 1,000 diseased ash trees have been felled as Herefordshire Council works to tackle a fungal disease spreading through them, known as ash dieback, caused by the hymenoscyphus fraxineus fungus, arrived in the UK in 2012 and has led to many trees being cut council said ash was the third most common tree in Britain, while in Herefordshire, more than 6,500 hectares of woodland contained ash - with the species also found on roadsides and in public open said the first two phases of a scheme to remove diseased trees had been completed in a move to protect healthy trees, and work on phase three had begun. Trees being replaced Between December 2024 and April 2025, work was carried alongside several main Elissa Swinglehurst, cabinet member for environment, said teams were only felling trees that were clearly in serious decline, posed an imminent danger to people or property, or where timber with significant value was likely to be said the recovery of woodland was "important to maintain the county's tree canopy cover", and a tree-replacement scheme was council's tree and hedgerow management plan set out that every tree removed would be replaced with a minimum of five new, smaller trees, she said, adding: "We are committed to tree regeneration."In places where there was insufficient space, larger trees will be planted in public open space instead. Binderella and Recycla Bull among names for bin lorries
BINDERELLA and Recycla Bull are among the names given by schoolchildren in Herefordshire to a new fleet of bin lorries. The 28 vehicles, including Ziggy Starbin and Lambor-greenie, were named by primary school pupils across the county. Councillor Elissa Swinglehurst, environment cabinet member said: 'We are delighted to have been able to ask primary school children from across the county to help us name our amazing new recycling and waste collection lorries. "It was a great opportunity for our young people to think creatively over the Easter holidays as well as giving us all a chance to get 'clued up' about what we can all recycle from home.'
